Das Salzburger Haus der Natur und seine Geschichte sind untrennbar mit der Person von Eduard Paul Tratz verbunden. Tratz gründete in den 1920er Jahren ein innovatives Natur- und Gesellschaftsmuseum, das er 1939 aus opportunistischen Motiven in das SS-"Ahnenerbe" integrierte und an den biologistischen Zeitgeist anpasste. Nach seiner Internierung durch die US-Besatzungsbehörden wurde Tratz 1949 erneut zum Museumsdirektor bestellt. Damit begann eine zweite Phase der "Ära Tratz", die durch ein hohes Maß an öffentlicher Wertschätzung bei gleichzeitiger Ausklammerung seines Handelns während der NS-Zeit gekennzeichnet war. Der vorliegende Sammelband ist nicht nur eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit Tratz' ambivalenter Persönlichkeit. Er beinhaltet darüber hinaus einen Abriss der Geschichte des Museums als Institution, eine eingehende Darstellung der Kontinuitäten und des Wandels im Ausstellungsbereich sowie eine Geschichte der Sammlungsbestände unter Einbeziehung der Provenienzforschung.
