Susannah Cahalan, autrice di "Brain on fire" (da cui è stato tratto l’omonimo film distribuito da Netflix), racconta una vicenda che ha scosso le fondamenta della psichiatria. Nel 1973 un articolo pubblicato su “Science” da David Rosenhan, psicologo di Stanford, scatenò una vera e propria tempesta nel mondo della psichiatria. Rosenhan e altri sette “pseudopazienti” si erano fatti ricoverare sotto falso nome in alcuni istituti psichiatrici, simulando disturbi mentali, per dimostrare che i dottori non avrebbero saputo oggettivamente distinguere la follia dalla sanità mentale. Lo studio segnò una pietra miliare e portò alla chiusura di molte strutture. Non mancarono le critiche, però, e molti fecero notare che l’intera vicenda presentava molte ombre. Cos’era successo davvero dentro quegli ospedali? Susannah Cahalan, che ha vissuto sulla propria pelle le conseguenze di una diagnosi psichiatrica sbagliata, ricostruisce la storia dell’esperimento di Rosenhan, scoprendo una verità inaspettata e svelando diverse criticità della psichiatria degli anni Settanta.
