Zginie w przydrożnej zasadzce jako ofiara wojny domowej, która wybuchła pomiędzy zwolennikami i przeciwnikami dalszej walki z Anglikami. Barwny życiorys tego niezwykłego człowieka (tak w sferze prywatnej, jak i politycznej) Pat Coogan ‒ doskonały warsztatowo historyk i świetny narrator ‒ umieszcza na szerokim tle irlandzkiej historii. Czytelnik poznaje dzięki temu nie tylko poglądy i dokonania tytułowego bohatera, ale zyskuje też ogólną wiedzę dotyczącą uwarunkowań i etapów drogi, która prowadziła Irlandczyków ku niepodległości.
