Ceremony Book Reviews
Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko Book Summary
The great Native American Novel of a battered veteran returning home to heal his mind and spirit
More than thirty-five years since its original publication, Ceremony remains one of the most profound and moving works of Native American literature, a novel that is itself a ceremony of healing. Tayo, a World War II veteran of mixed ancestry, returns to the Laguna Pueblo Reservation. He is deeply scarred by his experience as a prisoner of the Japanese and further wounded by the rejection he encounters from his people. Only by immersing himself in the Indian past can he begin to regain the peace that was taken from him. Masterfully written, filled with the somber majesty of Pueblo myth, Ceremony is a work of enduring power. The Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition contains a new preface by the author and an introduction by Larry McMurtry.

A Ceremonial Triumph. Ceremony does a wonderful job of showing the struggles of a Native American people attempting to identify who they are in post WWII America through the eyes of war veteran Tayo. Sherman Alexie called this book the best Native American novel ever written--high praise from a man who many consider to be the best Native American writer of this or any time. He just may be right! A breathtaking journey in which Silko takes painstaking efforts to describe every last detail of the world we are invited to enter. Journey with Tayo as he battles through the effects of severe PTSD to discover who he is through the his own experiences, those of his family and the traditions of his people. His Ceremony is one of excruciating pain and exalting triumph that gives you great respect for the human spirit and the traditions of a forgotten people. Ceremony is a true pleausure.
Silko is a wordsmith. Incredible! The Ceremony is written with the cadence of Native drumming, It will haunt me.
