The Law of Nines by Terry Goodkind Book Summary

A publishing event— #1 New York Times bestselling author Terry Goodkind turns in a new direction and delivers a stunningly original thriller.

Turning twenty-seven may be terrifying for some, but for Alex, a struggling artist living in the midwestern United States, it is cataclysmic. Inheriting a huge expanse of land should have made him a rich and happy man; but something about this birthday, his name, and the beautiful woman whose life he just saved, has suddenly made him—and everyone he loves—into a target. A target for extreme and uncompromising violence . . . In Alex, Terry Goodkind brings to life a modern hero in a whole new kind of high-octane thriller.

Great Book. I read a lot of negative reviews on this and really don't get it. I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. I would recommend this book to Goodkind fans and to others that haven't read the SoT novels, I thought is was a great read from start to finish, kept me involved the whole time....excellent

Not bad. Exciting story but the characters lacked depth and didn't have the power of the characters from the SoT series. I enjoyed the books story but it didn't have the pulling power to bring me into the story like the early SoT books... All in all I would suggest reading it but it isn't my favorite terry goodkind book.

Excellent.. Excellent.

A good retread. While this book is supposed to be a separate work only vaguely associated with the Sword of Truth series, don't believe it. It is most certainly a continuation of that collection of books. While a person could, technically, read this book and it's potential sequels as a standalone franchise, they would sorely be missing out by not having completed the Sword of Truth series first. Having said that, those of you that have already completed Goodkind's series shouldn't expect anything new from this book. It feels very much like a retelling of Wizard's First Rule set in modern day. While I would definitely say that this book stretched Goodkind's imagination in no way, shape or form, I also must say that I enjoyed it. Although the book is quite short, I wasn't ready for the Sword of Truth series to end (even after 12 books) and this continuation gave me the fix I needed. Although renamed, I still feel like I'm reading about Richard, Kahlan and the Imperial Order. So, in summary, if you're looking for more Sword of Truth then I would recommend picking up The Law of Nines. If you're thinking of starting Goodkind's works here, I strongly suggest going back to Wizard's First Rule and working your way to this book. You'll feel much more fulfilled by doing so.

Typical Goodkind. This author couldn't be more ham fisted if he cut his hands off and tied actual hams to the end of his wrists. The plot is terrible, boring, and contrived and the main character is a clear Mary Sue who can do no wrong. The dialogue is stilted and unnatural (believe it or not no one actually talks as if they are constantly lecturing in real life) as it became in the last few SoT books. You never have to wonder how a character is feeling at any given moment as they are always telling someone about it in exhaustive detail. I used to be as big a fan of Goodkind as anyone back when he was actually a good author, but sadly those days seem to be long gone and each of his last few volumes has been progressively and notably worse than the last. I guess I should stop buying his books and hoping to find the quality of the past.

Really good. It's really good despite the negative reviews.

Not as epic as I anticipated.... While I enjoyed the throwbacks to the original SoT series, the exhausting parallels between Alex/Richard, Jax/Kahlan, Ben/Zedd, etc. seemed completely contrived--I knew what would happen plot-wise before it happened. Nothing surprised me, which was disappointing since I loved the original series and it kept me on my toes the whole time. Formulas and tropes, while useful, make for stale storytelling. Overall, I'd rather read for depth of character (which is the best part of Goodkind's work) rather than have this entire plot resolved in one book. Has he run out of lessons to teach and interesting/lovable characters to share? I hope not. Also, editing on this platform needs improvement.

Great book. I loved this book. Can't wait til tg comes out with another. Either the sot series or the law of nines series!!! Keep them coming terry!

Give me more. Excellent start to what is hopefully another legendary sequence of books!

A hack's biggest hack job. I feel cheated. If I wanted to re-read scenes from Goodkind's previous work, I would have gone back and read The Sword of Truth series again. Instead, Goodkind offers a watered-down excuse of a book with characters that are many shades more transparent than those in his previous works. Alex Rahl is a mealy-mouthed excuse for a paled down Xerox copy of Richard Rahl. He doesn't give us a single reason to care about him throughout this entire book. As I picked this book up, I was hoping it was a doorway to a new chapter in Goodkind's growth but instead, it made me realize just how truly awful of a writer Goodkind has become. The formulas he's leaned so heavily upon (preach, action, preach, preach some more) don't work when the character is so poorly defined from the onset. I want my money back, Terry. And my time. You hack.

The Law of Nines. If you never thought you could enjoy a book about invaders from another world, try this one! You will be happily surprised and continually engaged with characters that leave you wishing for more. Next?

Terry! What are you doing?!. The Rule of Nines is ok. Definitely a far, far, FAR cry from Goodkind's earlier Sword Of Truth books. It is a spin-off from Naked Empire (which was a piece of garbage). And it has the same melodramatic, corny character. It keeps you reading along only because you keep expecting him to get somewhere...and he does...eventually, but it under delivers with it's simplistic story line, lack of character complexity, and sappy, bitter-sweet ending. If you expect a Wizard's First Rule or Stone of Tears caliber story, you will be very disappointed; if you forget that this is T. Goodkind and take it as a casual, cheap and amateurish garden variety fantasy read, then u may be ok with spending the $8.99.

It's ok. Not as good as sword of truth books. Kinda cool premise of a Rahl descendant from the sword of truth series in modern day USA. It is just that goodkind didn't know what to do with the story once he got started.

Ty for feeding the hunger. Was a great book to feed your addiction of the Sword of Truth series and has potential to keep the world alive , I myself love huge stories and epic timelines where you can look back over a huge timeline in the same world and remember the histories that took place there. The people that are giving it horrible reviews are pretty much snobs, drug addicts trying to search for the buzz of that first hit of Goodkind that you'll never get because after you've already won the lottery once getting an amazingly original story all you seem to do next time is complain about not getting as much as you did the first time... It's never gonna be good enough for them.

It makes my world more complete. Adding the Law of Nines to the rest of the rules only makes sense. Temple of Wind touched on the rule and Law of Nines completes the rule.

It could be much-much better. Well, in the beginning this book really catches your attention, there are many ideas which could make this novel awesome. But then I became really disappointed( the problem is the same as in SoT series (hello Jegan we missed u so much), the characters are not really "real" and the most disappointing was the end of the story: way too simple and absolutely no answers to the questions touched upon in the book. Seems like we lack part 2.

Another wonderful novel from TG. If you're a fan of Richard & Kahlan, then this book will not disappoint! I had read several harsh, bad views but I decided to give it a chance anyway & boy, I am so happy that I did! Incredible adventure, a captivating love story & incredible attention to detail; all characteristics that this book does not lack. I highly recommend it!

Not his best work. I'm a huge fan of sword of truth novels and decided to read this book even though I heard terrible things about it. It was ok, I hope the new sword of truth book, omen machine, will be better.

Fun twists. The book had a few fun twists that were unforeseen. It vaguely played with ideas from Richard's series. I wouldn't mind reading a second book on Alex.

A good read. While not as fresh and interesting as the sword of truth series was it held my attention well enough. Reminiscent of the same themes to the point (and sometimes over it) of copying the general plot and background ideology of the former series, it managed to have a crisper concise feeling to its plot that reminded me of the first Goodkind novel before it flowered into the full SoT septilliogy. Will appeal to fans of his works more, but will hopefully draw new readers into a rich and fun universe that he's painted.
