The Man Who Heard Voices by Michael Bamberger Book Summary

A behind-the-scenes look at the groundbreaking filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan

In his relatively young career, M. Night Shyamalan has achieved phenomenal commercial and critical success. His films The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, and The Village have grossed over $1.5 billion and reinvented the thriller genre. Because Shyamalan has worked outside of the Hollywood system, however, his filmmaking habits and personality have remained largely unknown. But reporter Michael Bamberger obtained unprecedented access to Shyamalan during the tumultuous production of his film Lady in the Water, and in The Man Who Heard Voices exposes the struggles and triumphs of this modern-day Hitchcock at work.

From revising the screenplay to shooting on location and evaluating the crucial initial test screening, The Man Who Heard Voices tracks all stages in the life of Shyamalan’s film. Bamberger delves into Shyamalan’s relationship with the actors and the studio (he moved from Disney to Warner Bros. for this film) while also profiling various players on set. The result is a fascinating insider portrait of creative genius—and the real-life story behind a Hollywood thriller.

M. Night, The Person. I think a lot of people like myself raised on memes and the internet are familiar with the name M. Night Shyamalan being a punchline. But something we can all easily overlook when laughing and pointing the finger at someone's misfortunes is that often the "joke", in this case, is a person. Somebody with hopes and ambitions. Reading this made me understand M. Night a little more, not just as a filmmaker but as a human. Nobody ever tries to make a bad movie. And reading this, especially, showed me how desperately Night WANTED Lady in the Water, to be his E.T.; a movie that defined a moment, an era. Regardless of what you think about Lady in the Water and it's flaws or blunders, at the center of it all is a human story about a man, seemingly burdened with a premature phenomenon, and his ongoing effort in proving himself that he deserves to be in the business of making pictures. Not just commercially viable products, but movies that mean something to him and the masses. Something original. After reading this, I'm even more convinced that he DOES deserve his spot and even more pleased with his recent sucesses on The Visit and Split. M. Night Shyamalan, in a lot of ways, stands firmly alongside the greats. He rose, fell flat, fell again a few more times, but never stopped getting up. I think that's hella admirable. Read this book today!

Fascinating. I'm not even the biggest fan of M. Night, but I am tearing through this book. Amazing detail about the man, the way he thinks and the way he creates.
