A Matter of Magic by Patricia C. Wrede Book Summary

Magic and intrigue go hand in hand in Mairelon the Magician and The Magician's Ward, two fast-paced novels filled with mystery and romance, set against the intricate backdrop of Regency England.

When a stranger offers her a small fortune to break into a traveling magician's wagon, Kim doesn't hesitate. Having grown up a waif in the dirty streets of London, Kim isn't above a bit of breaking-and-entering. A hard life and lean times have schooled her in one lesson: steal from them before they steal from you. But when the magician catches her in the act, Kim thinks she's done for. Until he suggests she become his apprentice; then the real trouble begins.

Kim soon finds herself entangled with murderers, thieves, and cloak-and-dagger politics, all while trying to learn how to become both a proper lady and a magician in her own right.

Splendid. The book is great! It has been some time since a book has enthralled me such as this. While I did notice a typo or two it wasn't enough be a detriment to the story. The story kept me on my toes always wanting a bit more. When I figured out what was coming it was still very enjoyable to see how the characters handled it themselves. I look forward to more of this story or the very least a movie maybe?

Word Weaving. Much as a magician weaves a spell, Wrede has done it again! From beginning to end I found myself enchanted by her masterful story telling. As for a question of its predictability, it's a book. If you classify yourself as a 'reader' then sure you can guess what is going to happen. That is not the point! Rather the point is the wonderful journey on which Wrede guides you. If you are a fan of her previous books, this will not disappoint!

A Good, if flawed, book. The first book’s flaws come in it’s pacing, a problem that hits the second one just as well. It moves along steadily, and doesn’t really take the time to slow down for a bit to give the more fast paced moments their due gravity. It doesn’t kill the feel of the story, but it does sap some of the potential impact of it. The real problem both stories have is that they fall prey to the problem of “explains everything right before the end”. The two stories are ostensibly mystery novels, but the clues given lead nowhere until you basically have the solution dropped into your lap right before the end, which annoys me. But of course, the real story is that of Kim, the thief that becomes a mage. She’s an engaging character, and I like the way her perspective is presented, especially in the second book where she becomes more of a character. If anything, this should have been 4 books to properly flesh out the world (which is awesome, I want to know more about this alternative history), and give Kim more time to gradually change from street thief to mage. As it stands, the change happens in a time jump between books, and overall it feels like there’s wasted potential there, but I’ll not ding the book further for that. TL;DR: Good book for a young adult reader, but lacks the depth the story deserves.

Great, if lacking a bit in the second half. I loved the first book; it was wonderful seeing Kim get caught up in a new life and situation. Second wasn't quite as good, because I didn't find the romance as plausible; still, it was delightful seeing Kim try to come to terms with her new circumstances. As for ebooks costing less than paper... Please. A very large part of the cost of a book is completely independent of the actual printing - author's advance and royalties, editing, proof reading and typesetting, cover art, promotion... These costs don't magically vanish just because a book is published in e format instead of paper, and the cost is most certainly not 'nothing' - at least, not if you want to continue to get books written by good authors, edited and proofread by competent people. I rather do.

Great book. From the moment I begun reading the series, I throughly enjoyed them. I only wish the love story could've been developed more, but thought the books were great, regardless.

A matter of magic. Excellent tale; very well written. I downloaded a sample at lunch, and realized I'd better buy the book when I was almost late getting back to work because I'd gotten caught up in the storyline. A little pricey considering it's an e-book and the publishers don't have to pay for paper, printing and distribution, but worth it for this one as it also includes the sequel. Anyone else finding it ridiculous to pay as much for an e-book as you do for a paperback or hardcover when it's almost pure profit for the publishers in e-format?

Very nice but. I hated it. i wanted to stop reading it. it was boring. i was fighting to keep reading it. Why you ask. becuase i thought it would be more about her learning magic. half the book was set to something else befoe it even got to what i wanted. then i didnt need to fight it. it got fun for me. and i looked forward to reading more then it ended...... I didnt like that ending they could have let us at least see them go threw with it. if you read the book you know what i mean. but any way it is still a good read even thought the first half of the book was some what not to my taste. i still read it. and wouldnt mind a second book.
