Where Things Come Back Book Reviews
Where Things Come Back by John Corey Whaley Book Summary
Winner of the 2012 Michael L. Printz and William C. Morris Awards, this poignant and hilarious story of loss and redemption “explores the process of grief, second chances, and even the meaning of life” (Kirkus Reviews).
In the remarkable, bizarre, and heart-wrenching summer before Cullen Witter’s senior year of high school, he is forced to examine everything he thinks he understands about his small and painfully dull Arkansas town. His cousin overdoses; his town becomes absurdly obsessed with the alleged reappearance of an extinct woodpecker; and most troubling of all, his sensitive, gifted fifteen-year-old brother, Gabriel, suddenly and inexplicably disappears.
Meanwhile, the crisis of faith spawned by a young missionary’s disillusion in Africa prompts a frantic search for meaning that has far-reaching consequences. As distant as the two stories initially seem, they are woven together through masterful plotting and merge in a surprising and harrowing climax.
This extraordinary tale from a rare literary voice finds wonder in the ordinary and illuminates the hope of second chances.

Great read. Got hooked quickly onto this book and couldn't put it down. For probably any type of audience over the age of 13/14.
Splendid. This was seriously one of the best books I've read in a long time. Maybe even ever. It was beautifully written, funny and a bit sad at times. I thought that the two stories within the book were masterfully intertwined. It deserves all the raving reviews and awards. I recommend this book to everyone.
Awesome. Awesome book, love it!
Not for everybody. This well written novel is at times comical, thoughtful, dark, and always exciting. I loved it, but it is not for everyone.
Great!. The author came to my school a few days ago.. Very entertaining! Great book!
Okay.... As I read this book, I struggled to get through it. I am an avid reader and yet it took me a month to finish this book. The story line drags, and it's mostly boring. There was little to no character development, which was disappointing. It was well written, but I do not recommend. And it is definitely not worth the price.
True Southern Narrative. Rarely has a 3rd person narrator captured my attention like this one. The story has the feel of a Catcher in the Rye meets Huck Finn sort of southern existential angst. The zombies were mere icing on the cake!!!!
