Marco Polo, mercante ed esploratore veneziano, compose Il Milione nel 1298, dettandolo mentre era prigioniero a Genova.
Lo scritto si rivelò subito un successo (seppure inizialmente non fu dato credito alle preziose informazioni contenute), tenuto conto che ancora non esisteva la stampa.
Quest'opera ebbe una grande importanza per la conoscenza del lontano Oriente e contribuì a segnare l'inizio di una nuova epoca: quella in cui l'uomo europeo, liberatosi ormai delle paure dell'alto Medioevo, si affacciava al mondo esterno con sguardo curioso e indagatore, come un conquistatore sicuro di sé e dei propri mezzi. Più avanti inspirò anche Cristoforo Colombo alle sue scoperte.
La versione originale del libro venne scritta in lingua d'oïl mista al veneziano e a italianismi vari da Rustichello da Pisa che trascrisse le avventure di Marco Polo quando questi si trovava prigioniero a Genova. Il libro fu scritto anche in latino e fu poi tradotto in diverse altre lingue parlate in Europa.
