The bird comes from Mexico and was brought to Europe by Spanish adventurers. Turkish traders popularised the bird, and that is how it got its name. Eating poultry was already a well-established tradition in England. And with the arrival of the turkey in 1510 there was an addition to the Christmas feast. England later spread the tradition of eating turkey at Christmas to its many colonies such as those in the USA, Australia and New Zealand.
