Swann's Way by Marcel Proust, Lydia Davis & Christopher Prendergast Book Summary

The first volume of one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century, in Lydia Davis's award-winning translation

Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time is one of the most entertaining reading experiences in any language and arguably the finest novel of the twentieth century. But since its original prewar translation there has been no completely new version in English. Now, Penguin Classics brings Proust’s masterpiece to new audiences throughout the world, beginning with Lydia Davis’s internationally acclaimed translation of the first volume, Swann’s Way.

Swann's Way is one of the preeminent novels of childhood: a sensitive boy's impressions of his family and neighbors, all brought dazzlingly back to life years later by the taste of a madeleine. It also enfolds the short novel "Swann in Love," an incomparable study of sexual jealousy that becomes a crucial part of the vast, unfolding structure of In Search of Lost Time. The first volume of the work that established Proust as one of the finest voices of the modern age—satirical, skeptical, confiding, and endlessly varied in his response to the human condition—Swann's Way also stands on its own as a perfect rendering of a life in art, of the past recreated through memory.

Not a book. An incredibly indescribable experience.. I wanted to read Proust, but each time I read segments I felt there was something missing from the sentences, a fluidity to his long prose. Then, I opened Lydia Davis' translation and the first page was so beautiful, so fluid, so full of intense imagery and emotion and place and character that I knew it was time to read Proust. I read each book, one after the other, taking my time and using a guide to help summarize long sequences which seemingly had little to do with the novel as a whole. It was only at the end I fully understood the importance of each word. When I turned the last page, two months after starting Swann's Way, I realized I had not read a book, but I had had a reading experience like no other. Reading, books, stories are forever changed after reading Proust - for me. This is unique to me as I understand from friends they did not have this "experience" yet still loved the book. The only way I can recommend Proust is to say that his words, his sentences, his paragraphs, scenes, structure, characters are my favorite of all time and I cannot imagine this will change. I have decided to reread Proust once every year. I will not read the other translations. I have tried again and again. I have done research of the differences between the translations and they are slight - a word here, a period or comma there and yet it changes the fluidity to such an extent I don't enjoy it. The Penguin Classic Deluxe Edition of Proust is, for Americans, for me, the most beautiful piece of literature I have found. Read it. Many are frightened by its length or hesitant about the hundreds of characters and the page long sentences. If you love words, this is a must. Once you get into the flow of the work, it drives you and, if you are like me, you will have a reading experience incomparable and totally original. It took me a while to come to terms with the result. Every book after Proust would be ok, but never great. Still, I read a lot. Still, I love reading. (One more thing: the story of Proust's life is essential to fully understand and appreciate his work. Marcel Proust is, by far, the most interesting character of literary lives. Once you start, it can be all consuming: reading the books, reading the biographies, reading the short stories, reading his first attempt at a novel, studying him. Go for it.) Enjoy. Just do it already. :)

Great book but. Really unique and rewarding reading experience. Disappointing the book costs $14 on iBooks and $1.99 on Kindle.

Two masterpieces in one. Proust was a magician. On almost every page, I felt compelled to stop and marvel at an observation or a turn of phrase or a complex sentence. Proust dives into the workings of his mind -- and of your mind, too -- with his miraculous renderings of the ways that thought, emotion, memory collide to produce consciousness. It's a difficult read, and you must have patience as well as peace and quiet. I think it's the greatest novel written. The other masterpiece is Lydia Davis's translation. It is clear and it sounds natural to my American ears.
