Basketball Junkie by Chris Herren & Bill Reynolds Book Summary

In his own words, former NBA and overseas pro Chris Herren tells how he nearly lost everything and everyone he loved, and how he found a way back to life. Powerful, honest, and dramatic, this remarkable memoir, Basketball Junkie, is harrowing in its descent, and heartening in its return.

I was dead for thirty seconds.

That's what the cop in Fall River told me.

When the EMTs found me, there was a needle in my arm and a packet of heroin in the front seat.

At basketball-crazy Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts, junior guard Chris Herren carried his family's and the city's dreams on his skinny frame. His grandfather, father, and older brother had created their own sports legends in a declining city; he was the last, best hope for a career beyond the shuttered mills and factories. Herren was heavily recruited by major universities, chosen as a McDonald's All-American, featured in a Sports Illustrated cover story, and at just seventeen years old became the central figure in Fall River Dreams, an acclaimed book about the 1994 Durfee team's quest for the state championship.

Leaving Fall River for college, Herren starred on Jerry Tarkanian's Fresno State Bulldogs team of talented misfits, which included future NBA players as well as future convicted felons. His gritty, tattooed, hip-hop persona drew the ire of rival fans and more national attention: Rolling Stone profiled him, 60 Minutes interviewed him, and the Denver Nuggets drafted him. When the Boston Celtics acquired his contract, he lived the dream of every Massachusetts kid—but off the court Herren was secretly crumbling, as his alcohol and drug use escalated and his life spiraled out of control.

Twenty years later, Chris Herren was married to his high-school sweetheart, the father of three young children, and a heroin junkie. His basketball career was over, consumed by addictions; he had no job, no skills, and was a sadly familiar figure to those in Fall River who remembered him as a boy, now prowling the streets he once ruled, looking for a fix. One day, for a time he cannot remember, he would die.

Great book!!. Chris came and spoke at our school this year. Very inspirational!! The book is great. If you ever get a chance to hear him speak, don't miss the opportunity. Thank you so much Chris for sharing your story. You're making a difference in so many lives!! God bless.

Great read!. Inspirational story of perseverance.

One of the best stories i've ever read. Amazing story, couldn't stop reading once I started. Very inspirational.

Basketball Junkie. Chris Herren did an exellent job with this book which should be a must read for all high school students. Nothing like a first person story too really bring home the message.

The City I Lived in!. I've just finished reading the demo. Parts of Chapter 1 literally could be taken out of a book, of the story of my life. Chills ran down my spine as ("The Great" Oak Grove Cemetery) incident, along with it's uncanny relationship with yet another drug addicts ordeals were mentioned. I may have even been envolved with that particular situation. Growing up just a block away.on The corner of Pine st. & Plain st. the neighborhood from Bedford st. to Durfee High, hold many good memories, much of my upbringing, and all the dark circumstances that came along with it. I myself have moved from Fall River,(not far) to neighboring Tiverton. This is just a small reason why I am 5 years sober today. I will purchase this book mainly because I'm curious to learn another perspective of a life in which I personally had dealings. And having once looked up to Chris, to eventually partaking in the dark dealings of the "junkie" lifestyle, along side he & our peers. I hope some of the proceeds go back into helping the acquaintances that are trying to achieve sobriety and also to The Boys & Girls club. I no longer introduce myself as my alias "Goya", that like the Macaroni Shop, it was good while it lasted. But I'm happy that chapter in my life is closed.

One day at a time. A brutally honest account of how drugs can destroy your life and everyones around you. Chris is a role model to anyone who may be suffering from addiction.

Mother of drug addicted son. From the mother of a 38 yr. old son with a drug addiction, I found this book extremely powerful. I gravitate to any positive story I can get my hands on. I stopped dead in my tracks when I heard an interview being broadcast on TV with Chris recently. In minutes I downloaded the book on my iPad. I felt as if I was reading my son's story, except for the part of coming to grips with the addiction and accepting help. I try to hold on to these stories with positive endings. I continue to pray for his recovery, especially for his 2 beautiful children (8 & 9) that he is missing out on. Good luck to Chris and his family.

Amazing. I couldn't put it down.

Basketball Junkie. Touching story.

Basketball Junkie. Every teenager should read this book! Excellent from start to finish. Rooting for you Chris!!!

Awesome!. Awesome!

My Hero. Heather, you are my hero! What an amazing woman you are! May you and Chris spend the rest of your lives blissfully happy!

A wonderful ride thru a life that so many have experienced.. If you take the basketball out of the story you have a story of addiction. As a recovering alcoholic and addict, this autobiography is exactly what it is like to be one of the millions of addicts in this country. Chris's honesty explains why so few recover from opiate addiction. Recovery is so painful, there is no joy, just a desire to make the pain stop, we take the drug to try to be normal. The odds for recovery from heroin are 6%, the lowest of any drug, the pain of withdrawal is so bad and lasts so long. Chris did a masterful job of shedding light on the treadmill we addicts find ourselves on, twenty eight years ago I had my moment of spiritual awakening just as Chris did, The book took me back so vividly that I actually found myself crying for my past and the pain I caused just as Chris did. Keep sharing Chris, there are so many young people that need a positive roll model. Thank you again. MikeKelley

Truly amazing story. Inspiring and sad. Reveals the ugly truth behind drug addiction.

Great Story. This is a great book and terrific story. I watched Chris during his basketball career. Followed all the ups and downs. It is great that he made it out alive and is with his family. I wish the best for him and hopes he keeps it together for the rest of his life. Good luck Chris!!!

Awesome. One of the best books I've ever read Chris is so inspirational shows anything can happen and you can still land on your feet

Basketball Junkie. Chris' story is well written, and undoubtedly will prevent some kids from making poor choices. The book was an enjoyable quick read.

Basketball junkie. Loved this book. The beginning worried me a little bit, but finished this book in 2 days!!

Basketball junkie. Great book...great story...I've lived this life with my son! I only pray it's a great "ending" as I pray my son has a "great ending". My best to you and your family...tuff road for all!!!

Great Story. The story is so deep and so personal. I just want to say thank you for sharing this experience with others. Their are many obstacles in life a personal most overcome and I want to be stronger when I heard of stories like this.

Speechless!!. What a great book!! He is truly an inspiration to anyone going through this.

Basketball Junkie. Riveting, devastating, and inspiring all at once! I was inspired to read this book after seeing the documentary, Unguarded, on ESPN. Chris' journey is shared with such brutal honesty and insight and it is impossible not to be inspired and motivated by his words, Thank God he survived his years of hell because he is now a gift to so many people who need a hero in their lives.

basketball junkie. What a story!

Riveting...Raw...Inspiring. I’ve seen the documentaries on ESPN, but Chris dives deeper into his life’s journey with an inside look at the private (and secret) battle that waged inside him while being seen publicly as a basketball star on the rise. He pulls no punches and describes the reckoning he ultimately faced in detail by heartbreaking detail after hitting rock bottom. Whether you’re a basketball fan, a Massachusetts native, a recovering addict or a family member of someone going through addiction, everyone can take Chris’ story to heart and find that there is always hope - even when it seems all hope is lost. A MASTERFUL job at telling a gripping account of such a long journey in a book that can be read over the course of a single evening.

A hero. I watched Chris when I was a kid growing up, I've read both books. I am in awe of your life accomplishments! What an outstanding book.

Great read. Very honest and personal book loved reading the demo and I am buying this one for sure.

Awesome. Great book. Chris god bless you brother. Drew

Exemplary. One of the best basketball reads of our lifetime. Definitely compliments the book Fall River Dreams to a great extent but first and foremost stands alone in its own testament and legacy, Chris Herren(the actual events and beautiful, rich basketball legacy of the individual and city he hails from). I recommend this read to anyone who ever picked up a basketball, loved the game, and had it love you back. To anyone who ever had a struggle in any sense while living in this realm. Powerful, almost hard to believe TRUE, REAL story of a warrior.

Inspiring. Anyone who has been an addict (like myself) will love this book... An if your not an addict you'll love it an learn a lot about where addiction can take you.... Thank you Chris you are a hero!

Full disclosure. Chris is a hero! For being so open to what he was feeling. For someone like me who has lost someone to drugs, there were countless times I had to stop and let the tears flow. To let the healing begin... Thank you Chris for your open honest telling of your story. I have read Fall River Dreams too.... It offers the groundwork for this insightful read. I feel as if Chris is a part of my family now... Thank you! If you are a teacher (like I am) or a coach (like I was) this is an important read.

Basketball junkie. I never read the book but i met him very amazing journey
