Different but good!. I watched the show before reading. Turns out that the book is on par with the show until toward the end. I found that the show made this story arc more dramatic than the book. Also, characters were developed faster in the show than in this book. I would recommend this book because it is written beautifully. But watch the show too...

Not what I was expecting, but still great!. After watching the entire Showtime series I decided it was time to read the books. The book definitely takes a different turn than the show but still such a great read. Much like everyone else I would recommend the show and books.

Slice of life. The book could have been 200 pages longer. Although the insight provided by Dexter makes a terribly interesting read, the plot is full of holes and the other characters exist as a means to create certain plausibilities. Thankfully, the tv show does a commendable job of filling the gaps. Lindsay's Dexter does happen to be much more sadistic, thereby much less likable.

I love you Jeff Lindsay! And Dexter too!. What a fantastic read. Watched the show first. If it weren't for Jef. We wouldn't have the masterpiece that is Dexter. Jeff is quite the writer.

Amazing book series!. Amazing first book and book series! It baffles me that people are praising the show over the book in the reviews here because it’s obvious the show was taken directly from the books and almost word for word from the first book, not entirely the same plot overall or ending but pretty darn close. The books are funny, dark and so entertaining and made the show what it is. I could honestly re-read them all!

Fantastic TV Show. ...absolutely terrible book. Whoever saw the potential in this poorly written book and adapted it for the screen is a genius.

Chilling and Darkly humorous. Lindsey hits it out of the park with this moody, atmospheric thriller in the first installment of the dexter series. Halfway through the book I began to wonder if the author has had past experiences with his own "dark passenger." his wordplay and prose were a delight from beginning to end. A very entertaining read, it literally kept me up past my bedtime on more than a few occasions just so I could finish one more chapter. I highly recommend this book to any fans of crime dramas, dark comedies or the "dexter" TV show.

Different. The books isn't nearly as good as the show, but it is still quite good. The language is easy to read and easy to breeze through without hanging up on intricate wording like some other novels. The end seemed a bit rushed but overall it was a good story.

Pleasantly surprised!. I've been a fan of the show for 8 years and finally decided to give the book a chance. It was a great read and constantly entertaining! I am eager to read the next book.

Great book; TV Season is better. After watching the 1st season and reading "Darkley Dreaming Dexter". I found myself drawn more to the ShowTime story line rather than the Authors writing. Never the less this is still a great book and worth the read.

Showtime series Dexter much better than book.. Typically, I've almost always found the original book written by the author to be much better than the adapted movie or TV show. Subtleties such as the thoughts of the main character are naturally more developed in books and the language is richer. The Lecter Hannibal series books are much better than the movie, for example. In this case, unfortunately, not so. The book is short and has too much of the ramblings of Dexter's mind. Character development is limited. Too many coincidences or weird psychic dreams interwoven into real life makes it difficult for 'suspension of disbelief'. Both the book and the series slowly but surely 'humanize' the character who is basically a vigilante psychopath. The TV series does a good job of deeply developing the characters and the acting is great. I would not recommend this book...watch the show on Netflix or buy for a couple of dollars per episode on iTunes.
