A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan Book Summary

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE WINNER • With music pulsing on every page, this startling, exhilarating novel of self-destruction and redemption "features characters about whom you come to care deeply as you watch them doing things they shouldn't, acting gloriously, infuriatingly human" (The Chicago Tribune).

Bennie is an aging former punk rocker and record executive. Sasha is the passionate, troubled young woman he employs. Here Jennifer Egan brilliantly reveals their pasts, along with the inner lives of a host of other characters whose paths intersect with theirs.

“Pitch perfect.... Darkly, rippingly funny.... Egan possesses a satirist’s eye and a romance novelist’s heart.” —The New York Times Book Review

A visit from the goon squad. One of the worst books I've read in a long time. Don't bother, it was totally disjointed; I finally gave up with the power point chapter. Terrible.

Connections. Loved every word. Drop everything and read it.

Good to re-read. I didn't really appreciate this book until I read it a second time. It's more fun when you understand how it all fits together.

This is the book I wish I had written .... But reading it was the next best thing. Loved the time-shuttling, especially the projections into the near future when toddlers make or break bands and bloggers are all paid sell-outs. The PowerPoint presentation chapter had me rolling on the floor. And the fish-on-the-desk episode was especially poignant. Egan really captures the trajectories of hope, disappointment and despair that define so many high school would-be rockstars. She is a rockstar in her own right. Respect!

Tasteless, and disturbingly detached. Horrible, boring book. I finished the entire book. I kept waiting for some kind of redemption from the insensitive detachment to the mild traumas the characters were experiencing, and it never came. As a rape survivor, I find the chapter coming from the rapists point of view to be particularly disturbing and tasteless. Also the young teenage girls being drugged and abused by an old guy (again told from his perspective) was kind of revolting.

A worthy read.. A rewarding read. Accessible, thoughtful, cleverly constructed and heartfelt.

High hopes dwindled. The descriptive language Jennifer Egan uses throughout this book make it an interesting read, however, I was not impressed with the last quarter of the novel. Without giving too much away, I was very excited about the first 3/4 and anxiously flipped the pages to see how the story would tie up, and don't get me wrong, it did tie up, however it took a strange abrupt turn into the future that was littered with pretension which I could have done without.

Moio. You q7

Transcendence. Never have I read a better book than this one. So much beauty in the writing and the author’s wisdom that I felt like my heart was going to swell out its natural place in my body. I will never forget this book and will forever now see things through a new lens. Thank you Jennifer Egan. I was worried with all the almost unreadable writing being published, that new great works of literature that weren’t overly depressing were never going to exist again. I am just floating right now having finished this book and am a little bit sad it’s over. This book for me is like Scotty...breaking through the banal and conventional...true beauty and art.

Horrible book. I had to read this book for school and it was one of the most irrelevant and pointless books I have ever read. Each chapter is totally different from the one before and the storyline is practically non-existent (although a few of the chapters are connected by flashbacks and stuff like that). Random new characters that had nothing to do with the story came up in almost every chapter, and chapter 12 was literally a PowerPoint written by some girl that made no sense and had nothing to do with anything. There were no lessons/morals that I was able to take from this book considering that there was barely even a storyline to this whole novel. I certainly don't recommend wasting your time reading it unless you have to (like me).

A visit from the goon squad. Remarkable! Intense! Full of surprises.

Disappointing. This book was a huge disappointment. I looked forward to reading it because of all the great reviews but WOW! It was difficult to navigate. It was one little story after another little story and I spent more time trying to figure out who was who then I did trying to enjoy the story. Actually, there was no story.

Visit from the Goon Squad. Stellar! Absolutely new......

Amazing. An incredibly captivating book with fascinating characters who come and go repeatedly in the different chapters, each written in a different narrative voice, each placed in a different time and place.

Goon Squad. Enjoyed it. A worthwhile read. Good character development.

Good But Not Great. I had extremely high expectations for this book, given that it received the National Book Award over some exceptionally outstanding novels. I thought it was a good read, but not outstanding, and I too think that the vaunted PowerPoint chapter led to overhyping this book. In essence, this is a short story collection loosely cobbled together to form a novel. Each chapter focuses on one of the several characters whose lives intersect with one another. I liked it well enough but it did not leave me thinking about it long after I was done, and I didn't rush out to tell my book loving friends that they had to read this book.

What a Great Introduction to Egan’s Writing. This poignant, beautifully written novel took me back to my youth and then thrust me back to the present because, after all, I grew up.

Too bad.... The first half was great and I was really enjoying the story and the characters. Suddenly I found it unbearable to read and truly did not care how it ended.

What happened?. I was up late most nights reading Jennifer Egan's award winning book and the writing and characters deserved the interest. Yet, the last chapter just came from nowhere. While the author was cleverly trying to pull all the character stories together, it was done in a sloppy sci-fi ending that didn't mesh with the previous writing and actually made me hate some of the characters I had bonded with earlier in the book.

Good Read. Thx

A Visit from the Goon Squad. Eh.

Great. Very good

Amazing writing and characters. Loved this book. As I typically read at bedtime it took a lot to put it aside and actually get sleep!

Great Read. I had a long review written but I hit something and it is gone so suffice to say, I enjoyed it tremendously and found lots of things refreshing and interesting from the characters (Sasha is easy to root for) to writing the daughter's chapter as power point slides (brilliant!) to the back and forth time sequencing (confusing but part of the books effect. Also there some clever insights into life past, present, future.

Fell off a cliff. This book really had me up until about half way through it. Then it just fell off a cliff and was barely readable. All I wanted was to finish it and get started on something new.

What happened?. The beginning of this book reads interesting enough, but as soon as I started to get excited about the characters introduced the author seems to get confused - or at least she confused me! I spent more energy trying to keep up with who was who and who was where & when that I became exasperated! What was the point? Time travel? New technology? A look into the future? What happened to the story? And why did this win a Pulitzer? Oh that's right, the chapter written in power point. Other than that quirky chapter, I didn't find it a very novel novel. (pun intended)

Almost Perfect. I loved the first 80 percent of this book and could read an entire novel about the characters in the chapter "A to B." I thought Ms. Egan did a flawless job of connecting the characters within the stories. Brilliant. Like others, however, the last few chapters fell flat for me and the final chapter was just....huh?

One of my favorites. Read this a few years back, and I still think of this book fondly. I loved how the story was told through different characters who were all somehow interconnected.

Terrible from beginning to end. Possibly the most terrible book I’ve ever forced myself to finish

Exceptional. Evocative prose that never drew attention to itself. A structure that seemed effortlessly to lead you through space and time like Italian architecture. It was an experiment that went wonderfully right. I loved it.
