The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The "stunning" debut novel  (Los Angeles Times) from the bestselling author of The Flight Portfolio—the inspiration for the Netflix series Transatlantic—is a grand love story set against the backdrop of Budapest and Paris, a tale of three brothers whose lives are ravaged by war, and of one family’s struggle against the forces that threaten to annihilate it.

Paris, 1937. Andras Lévi, a Hungarian-Jewish architecture student, arrives from Budapest with a scholarship, a single suitcase, and a mysterious letter he promised to deliver. But when he falls into a complicated relationship with the letter's recipient, he becomes privy to a secret that will alter the course of his—and his family’s—history. From the small Hungarian town of Konyár to the grand opera houses of Budapest and Paris, from the despair of Carpathian winter to an unimaginable life in labor camps, The Invisible Bridge tells the story of a family shattered and remade in history’s darkest hour.

Moving and Amazing. Without a doubt my favorite novel of my 78 years.

Long but worth it. Loved this saga. Although it is longer than I’m used to, it was impossible to put down

Incredible Work of Art. I listened to The Invisible Bridge on an audio book initially. I loved it so much, I listened to it a second time then had to purchase it for myself. As a 36-year technical writer, I am attempting to write interesting stories about my enslaved ancestors with as much historical accuracy as I can muster, but with heartwarming stories and characters that people will remember. Julie’s in-depth characters, experiences, prose, and delivery are engrossing. A “page turner” as my writing group members strive for. Her clever turns of a phrase are so evocative. This book should be required reading for Writing Classes! Love this book!

Required reading. It starts slowly. There are difficult names of people and places that make reading this an effort. You will be richly rewarded if you stick with it. This book doesn't really begin until the character development is complete well into the first half. When the real story begins, it is gripping and unforgettable. You will read well into the night, promise yourself you'll get to sleep earlier the following night, but stay up late again and again until the end.

Great book. Long, sad, but intriguing, romantic, and beautiful. It is also very well written.

Fabulous book!. I couldn't put it down. One of the best Holocaust books I have read. Gripping!

Thank you. Thank your for this book. My father, Michael Moshe was a first born American, and therefore, I a second. Many of my family members died in the war, the lucky ones escaping. My father passed away 6 years ago. Your book reminded me of how he would treat any Jew on the street with the kindness of family, because he was a fellow Jewish brother. I say the Mourners Kaddish and Psalm 91 for the Jews who passed, and my father. Your book is a beautiful, heart wrenching testimony to all of their lives and struggles. It makes me proud to say I'm a Jew. Thank you.

The Invisible Bridge. Captivating book. Easy to visualize people and places after a trip to Central Europe several years ago. I went to immerse myself in the horrendous and senseless murdering of human beings. I don’t think any one us will truly behind the senseless massacre. This book fills in some of the peculiarities that I missed. Author makes one feel as though they there watching

The Invisible Bride. Mind boggling how people can be so cruel You can't wait to get to the next page.

A different view of the holocaust. This book describes Jewish life in Hungary and Paris before ww2 and during the war. Well written, it pulls the reader along without seeming to be contrived. Well worth your time

Great book!. I loved it! Couldn't put it down once I started reading it. Sad, thought-provoking, compelling.

The invisible Bridge. This was the best book I've read in a long time. It kept me up many nights. Definitely would recommend it!

Great book!. Informative and gripping...I couldn't put it down. As mentioned in another review, you do not get a lot of information about Hungary during the war, and I kept searching for information as read. For those who are familiar with the geography and history, this book is spot on. Recommend this book for historical readers.

The Invisible Bridge. Very interesting and emotional book. Excellent writing and worth the length of the story.

The invisible Bridge. This book was wonderful--an intriguing plot, heroes the reader could identify with, and exquisite prose! There must have been fifty times that a phrase was so well written that I re-read the phrase a couple of times and envied the author her talent. My only regret is that I have finished reading it! I looked forward to my trip to Europe every night, even thought was the worst of times. Pat Hudson (author of 5 books)

Awesome. The book is better than the best.

Unforgettable. The best book I have ever read! I have read hundreds if not thousands during my lifetime. It is very engrossing, historically informative and begs for more. I have recommended it to everyone I know who is a serious reader.

The Invisible bridge. Wonderful book, so well worth reading. I did not want it to end, I hope she writes about their trip to America, how they adjusted, etc etc. I will remember Tibor and Andras and Klara for a long time. Keep writing, you have a wonderful gift of bringing the whole scene to life, I felt I was there at the time.

Incredible story. A powerful narrative with well-developed characters about the relatively untold story of Hungarian Jews in WWII. This book is a gem, and the story and characters will stay with you for a long time after you read it.

Excellent story telling. What a book! I feel I learned about the Hungarian history. Great characters, not heroes and not villains. Just people trying to survive during horrendous times. One of the best books I have read in a long time (and I read a lot) Thank you Julie Orringer for sharing this story

Can't shake this story.... I read this book at a pace quite a bit slower than normal for me. I don't know if it resonated with me so deeply because it took me a couple weeks to read it, or because the story was so profound. This book affected my dreams in addition to my waking thoughts. Several times I dreamed that I was Jewish (and I'm not) and that I was suffering right along with Andres and Tibor. Also, the book was refreshingly clear of grammatical errors, which is hard to find in even the most read author's books. I highly recommend this story if you have any interest in WWII, and the effects on Europe. I don't recall learning much about Hungarians, so this book was surprisingly informative. Great story also.

Captivating. I truly enjoyed this book and thank the author and her family for sharing her family's history with us. The story was full of love, hate, suspense, joy, sorrow, family values, death and life. I recommend it to all my family and friends. Thank you.

Riveting. This book was engrossing as well as being beautifully written.
