The Dutch House by Ann Patchett Book Summary

Pulitzer Prize Finalist | New York Times Bestseller | A Read with Jenna Today Show Book Club Pick | A New York Times Book Review Notable Book | TIME Magazine's 100 Must-Read Books of the Year

Named one of the Best Books of the Year by NPR, The Washington Post; O: The Oprah Magazine, Real Simple, Good Housekeeping, Vogue, Refinery29, and Buzzfeed

From Ann Patchett, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Commonwealth, comes a powerful, richly moving story that explores the indelible bond between two siblings, the house of their childhood, and a past that will not let them go. The Dutch House is the story of a paradise lost, a tour de force that digs deeply into questions of inheritance, love and forgiveness, of how we want to see ourselves and of who we really are.

At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves.

The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother. The two wealthy siblings are thrown back into the poverty their parents had escaped from and find that all they have to count on is one another. It is this unshakeable bond between them that both saves their lives and thwarts their futures.

Set over the course of five decades, The Dutch House is a dark fairy tale about two smart people who cannot overcome their past. Despite every outward sign of success, Danny and Maeve are only truly comfortable when they’re together. Throughout their lives they return to the well-worn story of what they’ve lost with humor and rage. But when at last they’re forced to confront the people who left them behind, the relationship between an indulged brother and his ever-protective sister is finally tested.

Nothing happens. This book is well written (hence the two star rating instead of one) but incredibly slow. What little plot there is could have been described in about 50 pages. The basic premise seems to be that this magnificent old house causes all kinds of problems. That seems like kind of a stretch in the first place. None of the characters are particularly sympathetic either, so I wondered why I kept reading this book. I guess because I paid for it so I kept going. But I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

Great story. The best book I’ve read this year. The wry wit has you laughing out loud even in the darker scenes. A a wonderful tale about family loyalty and betrayal, and a house that enthralls them each in far different ways. I hated for it to end.

Very good and unique story. Unexpectedly good story. Kept me reading and entertained

Engaging Story. If you like stories set in places that seem real and you love old houses, this is the book for you! Loved the characters, loved the house, loved the way Ann Patchett made the characters real and made me want to keep on reading.

New Favorite. This is my new favorite book and author. I absolutely loved it!

Mediocre. This book was mediocre and predictable. Nothing happens that makes sense . Shallow characters and situations that are ridiculous and improbable. Had great reviews but I was disappointed.

Family dynamics. This book was a really interesting story about family dynamics and the way we view the past. The portions about time passing and patterns being established I really liked. That said, I found the ending less than what I hoped it’d be, and I think the book could’ve been maybe 30 pages shorter. All in all a good time!

The house is a character. Sorry, I found this book really boring. I got through it, but admit I had to skim through a good bit of the repetition. Nothing exciting really happens at any time in this plot line.

The Dutch House. A lesson in forgiveness, letting go, and living life in the present. Powerful family drama.

wonderful story. The author tells the story with such precision and flair. Couldn’t put it down

Fabulous. One of my favorite books!!! Loved it from start to finish!! I didn't want it to end!

Recommend. Great read!

Great Read.. Great storyline with the feeling of a resolution at the end.

Snoozeville. She is a good writer with good descriptions but this book never really hooked me. I stuck with it because I thought it would improve but it ended up never going anywhere.

The Dutch House. Well written and not predictable story of a brother and sisters relationship throughout a tumultuous childhood and adolescence. I found that the book moving a bit slowly through the middle section with a strong ending.

The Dutch House. Started out interesting with family and loyalty. The story takes an interesting turn and becomes repetitive, and ends flat.

Boring. The characters are lackluster and feel flat and the story isn’t really exciting not sure how it got so many positive reviews.

Miraculous storytelling. Every word is breathtaking. I couldn’t put it down.

Wonderful book. This was such a great book. I did not want it to end. Looking forward to her next novel.

This is no Bel Canto!. I had a hard time liking this book. I just didn’t find the house as a character all that interesting. The house dominated everyone’s life so much that the story was pretty boring. I skimmed many sections just to see some progress in the story’s development. In the end, I really didn’t care about any of them.

Slow Burn. It took me several chapters to decide if I was “in” but once I was, I had to see it through to the end, which is the mark of a good story.

The Dutch House. This a great story. The characters are well developed and you grow to know them. I just thoroughly enjoyed the story and reading it made me want to read some more of her books.

Heart warming. It starts off slow but pick up within 15-20 pages. Just hold on.

Great Character Development. A wonderful read. I felt empathy for the main characters and thoroughly enjoyed the relationship of the siblings as it progressed over the years. The author does a great job of making you feel like you are in the places and eras she describes without going totally overboard.

Acceptable. Character oriented book. Slow plot

Lovely Book. Listened to audio version of book read by Tom Hanks. Excellent book

Beautifully written but slow. Detailed descriptions made the book come to life but the plot slugged along. I put it down a few times and came back to it. Liked the ending!

Dutch House. Interesting family intrigue.

The Dutch House. What a great book! Loved it!

What a House/ Home can mean. Interesting characters, well-written, worth the time. Would be an excellent selection for a book club! I liked it. Definitely worth the time.

Eh. I got about 2/3 through it and gave up. Super slow.

The Dutch House. Excellent! I couldn’t put it down. When I read this author I feel so connected to the characters. She explores real life issues

Breathtaking, Heart-Rending, Powerful. This novel is unlike any other I’ve read in that it conveys the depth of anger and unforgiveness and the violence those emotions wreak on humans and relationships, while also containing a gentle undercurrent of connections and love that last beyond the damage. It also positions the physical environment, the house, as an enduring character and driving force in the relationships and the lives of all the other characters, regardless of their relationship to it. I will be thinking about this book for a long, long time.

A journey. The choices we make. Seems convoluted early on but keeps getting better. Comes together beautifully.

Engaging and Worth the Praise. I held off reading because it seemed almost mainstream but it’s anything but. Really engaging and not meandering, like I expected. Beautifully written. Loved it.

Amazing!. Such a powerful message and absolutely beautiful writing! The author gets it right at every single turn. I love this book and didn’t want to put it down.

The Dutch House. The first two thirds are great. The last third okay. I did not like the mother. The mother was “saint” even though she left her two little children. She wasn’t beaten and her husband loved her. I found her actions to be selfish. As a mother, I could not imagine totally abandoning my child, for years, and for her reason. It made me wonder if the author is a mother.

Loved it.. It’s a story of love and hate, joy and heartbreak, otherwise known as a family.

Children caught in the middle. Adult decisions and delusions impact children. How they adapt and blossom is remarkable.

Not for Me. I found this book to be so slow. Interesting plot concept, but the middle was so drawn out and the ending was anticlimactic and predictable for the most part. I would not recommend.

Worth reading. This is a compelling tale of a family, a house, love, anger, acceptance and forgiveness. It was hard to put it down.

The Dutch House. Boring and repetitive. I was so excited to have another Ann Patchett novel to read, but this one did not do it for me.

Not what I expected. Tom Hanks’ performance added an extra layer to this novel of two siblings journey through decades. While I expected the story to revolve around the house, I drove across country listening to smart and sassy characters develop. The family relationships made this a dynamic story and relatable. No such thing as a normal family, and she shows the brokenness and resilience of love. Patchett weaves a tale that puts her in my favorite authors list.

Wonderful story, beautifully written.. I loved the characters in this story. What an intriguing read.

The Dutch House. I loved this book; a great story and truly rich characters. The book is a vivid reminder of the complexities of humans, relationships, family, and life. While somewhat dark, it was also warm with notes of nostalgia. Great read!

Meh. Good but long winded. If you’re looking for action packed or the “psychological thriller” eye roll. This isn’t it. If you’re looking for slow, steady, and no excitement, you found it.

Family drama in a beautiful home. Loved the characters....story made me sad, but also made me count my family blessings!

Lovely. A delightful gentle read from beginning to end. Rich in enough detail to please this interior designers soul.

Excellent novel of a mansion occupied over time by several families.. Fascinating characters, well written.

Very Good. I enjoyed the story and the characters. Pleasant to be let into the characters lives.

The Dutch House. A great family drama with a feel good ending

Great Read, Wonderful Characters. Really well-written tale about family and the tiny moments of life that interweave and become a rich tapestry. Just loved it. My only issue is I really dislike what happened to the one character at the end, but I understand the choice.
