An Unforgettable Story. This is one book that I have read every summer since the year it was published. One thing I love is how alive the characters seem to be - and how relatable as well. Belva Plain wove a complex beautiful tapestry with words, thoughts, feelings, and emotions of Anna, Joseph, Iris, Maurice, and family. I absolutely love this book! Nancy

Lovely. Read this several times as a young teen, and just read again at 45. Lovely writing, great characters. A worthy beach read.

Rambling and Convaluted. I know this is a critically acclaimed novel that got great reviews. Im personally struggling to understand why. It rambles over multiple decades and generational drama, which in theory makes a great read one can get lost in. Instead the reader is yanked from storyline to storyline with seemingly no rhyme or reason to when and how the story changes. The style of writing is such that the reader is to understand the thoughts of each character as well as read their dialogue. This is an interesting approach and should be moving, instead it feels like stream-of-consciousness drivel. The drafts must have driven the editor(s) crazy. Im struggling to finish it but keep hoping the random and rambling storylines will somehow tie back together. Huge disappointment since this book has been on so many “best” lists since it’s publication. If this is Plain’s writing style I shan’t be reading more of her work. Disjointed, way too long for seemingly no direction of the story, Evergreen is not one of those books I look back on with joy or even pleasure. Don’t waste your time, and it’s going to be a huge chunk of your time as it rambles on for over 700 painful pages.

Evergreen. First time reading this author. I wish I could say I enjoyed this book, but I can’t. I found it extremely depressing and overly long.

Evergreen. Second time reading Evergreen. I remember loving this book many many years ago and after reading it again still I love this book. It speaks of family, hardworking Americans who made it in life with do diligence and hard work. It amazed me that some social issues are still issues we battle today, but what spoke the loudest was family love, traditions, and bonds.
