My favorite book in my favorite genre. As a former history teacher and lifelong history junky, I love historical fiction, and this book is my absolute favorite of them all. Most historical fiction authors have a hard time making their characters real and present. You are always aware of the author’s voice in the self-conscious use of anachronistic language and overwrought descriptions of former times, but James Alexander Thom hits it just right. It took about 150 pages to really get into the story. Part of that was because of my busy circumstances at the time, but part of that was because this is a mighty big story and it takes some time to lay the groundwork for what is to come. Trust me; it’s worth it. I love history, but this is the first story I’ve ever read that sent me on a self-directed history binge to find out more about the true events of the story. Before this book, I couldn’t recall ever hearing the name George Rogers Clark. Now I will never forget it. His is a very important chapter in early American history that is usually missed. Look him up. Better yet, read this book. Also, Long Knife, by the same author. Everyone has heard of the William and Clark expedition, but this is the first telling of it that ever left me with a tearful sigh that I missed the chance to be one of the first to experience the beauty, danger, freedom, and majesty of early America. (I also recommend Thom’s excellent “Sign Talker” if you want to read about the expedition from a Native American perspective, which I think is important). There is so much more I could say, but really, just read the book. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
