The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka Book Summary

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • PEN/FAULKER AWARD WINNER • The acclaimed author of The Swimmers and When the Emperor Was Divine tells the story of a group of young women brought from Japan to San Francisco as “picture brides” a century ago in this "understated masterpiece ... that unfolds with great emotional power" (San Francisco Chronicle).

In eight unforgettable sections, The Buddha in the Attic traces the extraordinary lives of these women, from their arduous journeys by boat, to their arrival in San Francisco and their tremulous first nights as new wives; from their experiences raising children who would later reject their culture and language, to the deracinating arrival of war.

Julie Otsuka has written a spellbinding novel about identity and loyalty, and what it means to be an American in uncertain times.

Pretentious. Written in a voice with flat affect, meant to convey the emotional honesty of the non-judging observer. In fact, this is insipid, lazy, anemic writing ("The Lovely Bones", for example). Fey, precious, sentimental. Nearly every sentence of each paragraph (and these are long paragraphs) has the same cadence and begins with the same words. The result is stupefying.

Disappointing. This book was a total disappointment. The writing style was irritating with the repetition and short phrases. It felt like reading a rambling personal journal.

Not keen on the writing style. It was an interesting, very fast read. But, the repetitive pattern of lists of sentences got extremely tedious. There is no character development, yet a lot of information. Disappointed.

Disappointed. I kept waiting for the story to start. It's like she keeps writing the opening sentence over and over and over. There is enough here to make a good story, but it never gets off the ground.

Powerful. While not as lyrical as her previous novel this is still a powerful work... for those not familiar with the history of Japanese immigrants to California and their struggles to be accepted and later the interment of them and their descendants during WW2 this should perhaps be a prequel for her first novel ‘when the emperor was divine’....

The Buddha in the attic. Was a hard read. Did not hold my interest. Was cold. There were no characters to become attached to. Would not recommend.

Eh--. I really wanted to love this book. It is a time period I have read several novels about and find it intriguing. The author has talent-- and I can respect her intent-- but I found myself bored with the lack of 'getting anywhere'-- pages after pages of monotonous descriptions without more direction---made me want to skim ahead in the hopes all the lush writing would morph into a true story about whomever was the voice. Unfortunately that didn't happen. I have to agree that because their isn't a strong character development the writing gets tiresome at times and even confusing. Sadly disappointed.

Disappointed. This book could've been fantastic if the details had been woven with individual characters. It just seemed like a long rambling. It was like reading a newspaper article from an inexperienced writer, continually waiting for it to get better. But it never did.

The Buddha in the Attic. This is the absolute worst book I have ever purchased. Her writing style is painfully repetitive, much like beating my head with a hammer. The characters do not have names or defined personalities, since everyone is grouped as a "we." Don't waste your device"s space by downloading this book even if it is for free!

The Buddah in the Attic. I love her writing. Lean, passionate, deeply poetic. I followed the excerpts of this book in Harpers and Granta earlier this year anxious to read the whole book. It does not disappoint. Highly recommended!

The Buddha in the Attic - great read. One of the best books I have ever read. She spoke the truth for hundreds of thousands Japanese. The words I read are part of American Japanese DNA- and I know this because my son is all these people. Using "we" was brilliant. I can't wait to read her next book. The people that didn't like this book- simply did not understand it- through no fault of the author.
