1Q84 by Haruki Murakami Book Summary

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The year is 1984 and the city is Tokyo. A young woman named Aomame follows a taxi driver’s enigmatic suggestion and begins to notice puzzling discrepancies in the world around her.

She has entered, she realizes, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 —“Q is for ‘question mark.’ A world that bears a question.” Meanwhile, an aspiring writer named Tengo takes on a suspect ghostwriting project. He becomes so wrapped up with the work and its unusual author that, soon, his previously placid life begins to come unraveled.

As Aomame’s and Tengo’s narratives converge over the course of this single year, we learn of the profound and tangled connections that bind them ever closer: a beautiful, dyslexic teenage girl with a unique vision; a mysterious religious cult that instigated a shoot-out with the metropolitan police; a reclusive, wealthy dowager who runs a shelter for abused women; a hideously ugly private investigator; a mild-mannered yet ruthlessly efficient bodyguard; and a peculiarly insistent television-fee collector.

A love story, a mystery, a fantasy, a novel of self-discovery, a dystopia to rival George Orwell’s—1Q84 is Haruki Murakami’s most ambitious undertaking yet: an instant best seller in his native Japan, and a tremendous feat of imagination from one of our most revered contemporary writers.

1Q84. A monumental novel, truly, but it could've used a very good editor's Occam's razor! All in all, a very solid novel.

What is this?. A love story? A journey through time? A fantasy ? An incredible piece of work? YES YES YES YES

Bland and Repetitive. This is probably one of the most boring and repetitive reads I’ve ever come across in my life. The passages concerning Tengo seem to stretch on and on with no significant development and the attention to minutiae in his surroundings does little to move the narrative forward. There is also a lack of character development. Maybe I just haven’t gotten far enough along in the text, but I don’t think that I will get far enough along in it because it offers no literary incentive to keep reading.

Loved it!. Superb, absolutely loved it, great plot, intriguing characters, amazing!

Not impressive. Wind up bird chronicle was something special; this book did not hit me that way.

Garbage. This book is extremely repetitive and full of plot holes. Don't waste your money or your valuable time in this garbage. It fails as a piece if fiction, a love story and as a philosophical work. I don't understand how incomplete, nonsensical crap like this gets published.

Worth It. I have never been more emotionally challenged by a writing style than with 1Q84. It is such a love hate relationship, and frankly, not everyone is going to like reading this book because it is extremely long and very repetitive. Many have said this book needs to be edited down, and I understand those complaints completely. However, it became clear to me at some point that Murakami intentionally wrote the book this way to create a certain consciousness and atmosphere for the characters and the readers and he really doesn't care if you like it or not. Take it for what it is and you will enjoy 1Q84 as a literary experience. If you fight it too hard, you'll end up putting it down after the first book.

1Q84. This novel had great potential but I felt let down in that the Dowager and her protector's fate was never mentioned. I wanted resolution for all of the characters.

1Q84. It is always hard to end a novel. Murakami is a genius but even he couldn't pull off a novel ending. Aomame is hard to believe fully as a character. She remains a concept from Murakami 's mind. Tengo is more believable. There is more life breathed into him and I can't help but think much of Murakami thoughts and feelings surface in this character. With this said, I found this book to be a philosophical puzzle about the nature of reality. On many levels Murakami asks "What is real?" in some ways the characters and plot are just the side show. I was glad to read this book, more to explore Murakami's thoughts about reality than for the less than satisfying plot. In the end he has given me a story with lots to chew on.

I won't forget it.. When's the movie?

Not worth the time. Get very repetitive in the the third

1q84. There are not enough stars to give to this book. I'm just totally blown away. I can't wait to go back to it and see what I get the next time that I would t have been able to get the first time; it's a dense, lush, magical, beautiful forest you want to explore again and again. My first Murakami book, onto my next!

Entertaining. Its super entertaining and a smooth read. Don't worry one bit about the length.

Captivating. This one stays with you long after you put it down. Highly recommended!

Amazing story!. A little of everything: love, mystery, fantasy, magic. Great well-developed characters. Hard to put down!

Great Story. Great story and well written. I think that some parts are painfully long and too much detail. Once the point is made, move on. Also, there is a lot of repetition throughout that could have been cut out making this a shorter read.

Long, but worth the read. The story was incredible, albeit dragging in some parts. It took me a while to read it, but it was well worth it.

Love Murakami!. One of the best authors of our generation

Introduction to Murakami. This was my first Murakami novel. A lot of people really suggested to start with another title but something about this books synopsis just begged me to read it. This is the longest book I’ve ever read and I don’t regret a single second of it. This book really grabs you by the hand and walks you down a path that seems to have no end, however once you find familiarity in the characters and start to finally piece a couple pieces together, this book blooms into an epic suspenseful trip that will stay with you for a long time. I still think of Aomame and Tengo on a daily basis.

How did this get published?. I am a voracious reader, and when I finished another book, I decided to try this one. I really don't understand how this got published, let alone on the top lists of 2011. It was 1300plus pages of over description and minimal plot. Literally, the SAME descriptions of the SAME things over and over. I kept hoping something would happen. Or something would get explained. Nope, no such luck. Really, not a good book.

Meh. It was ok.

Superb!. Highly recommended!

Murakamisan ga totemo sukebe desu yo!. Atama ga warui! A very sick book by a very sick person. Lit equivalent of child porn. Wish I could return it!! Everyone against child abuse and exploitation should avoid, which I know will be a ringing endorsement for the similarly sick among us. Moreover , the premises of his fantasy world are crap.

If you like Murakami, a must read!. I have read all of his work, by far the best. Draws you in and does not let you go. Like his other fiction work, explores the metaphysical, but this time with action.

1Q84. I am a fan of Charles deLint. Murakami also delves into urban fantasy - in a different and enjoyable way. I've read all of deLint's books, and will probably read all of Murakami's.

Worth reading. Overly long, but worth reading.

Stunning and brilliant. 1Q84 is a behemoth to read, but when you finish it, you are left with a blissful satisfaction. The characters are compelling and interesting. Murakami's descriptions are so engaging that it makes one never want to skip a line. I often skip lines when I get bored, but I read each word through and through. There is a magic realism and surrealistic thread throughout the novel, I wouldn't classify it as total fantasy. It is romantic and thrilling. It took me a long time to read but I think it's worth it. Check it out.

Miss Ota and her pink suit. This book could be called a monster and a long haul were it not for the expert writing. Instead, it's like a visit to a spa -- if one learns to relax and give into it. It is about the degree to which we have control over our lives -- and reality -- the nature of what is real. There is murder, love, adventure -- all the stuff of Shakespeare. Then there is Miss Ota in her pink suit, the greatest descriptive paragraph I've read since Anthony Powell created Widmerpool. I loved every page.

Exceedingly boring and repetitive. IQ84 starts out with great promise and an intriguing concept. However, the further you go into the story, the novel becomes more repetitive and boring. For chapters on end, nothing happens but characters staring at the two moons or wondering about rubber plants or rehashing over and over again what happened in the first 300 pages. If the point of this story was to torture the reader into stupefying numbness, then bravo to the author... He succeeded!

Loveeeeeed it. This book is long, so if you plan on reading it prepare yourself. I personally couldn’t put it down!!!!!! It was the third book I read by Haruki Murakami. I absolutely love his writing, and all the magic realism his books have to offer. This book is seriously in my top favorites.

Astounding. Among the best books I've ever read. Simple, but beautiful in many ways.

Good, but left unanswered questions.. I heard about this book through a quote I saw in a movie "The Big Short." The quote was Haruki Murakami's novel "IQ84": Everyone, deep in their hearts, is waiting for the end of the world to come. That quote inspired me to read the book. It was a great plot. I usually don't dabble in fantasy too much, mainly because I think reality is dramatic enough. The Little People. I'm still confused about this part. They weren't explained at all. Near the end of the book I kept telling me girlfriend "there has to be a third book, it can't end without tying all these huge plots together." But there wasn't another book. I couldn't believe it! The writing was good. Sometimes the details were a bit too detailed and made the chapter drag on and on. I felt that sometimes there were useless details just to make the book longer. I'm not saying that being detailed is bad, but, like I said, it felt forced in some of its details. How did Aomame get pregnant? She got pregnant on that stormy night when "the little people were stirring." And Tango had sex with Fuka Era. The book didn't explain the pregnancy at all. The Two Moons. So the second moon was symbolic of the alternative world they were in? It didn't explain it at all. The ladder in the middle of the highway where the taxi driver dropped of Aomame. That's when she skipped into 1Q84. She tried going back and she almost killed herself when it didn't work. So all was needed was Tango to be able for them both to travel back to 1984? Leader had extraordinary powers that were weren't explained. All and all the book was entertaining, but I didn't like the way it ended with all the unanswered questions. I recommend it to others.

The fierce imagination. I read this book about a year ago, I had pre-ordered it. I read several pages on my iPhone in my metro commutings... The scenes of the book are still alive in me, I still remember Aomame, Tengo, Ushikawa, The Little People, city of cats, how Tengo's father still knocked doors unconsciously... It was a huge book, took about 4 months to finish (casual reading), and I loved nearly every moment of reading this book and living with it. The latest book of Murakami was my first encounter with him, and I'm really happy that I read this masterpiece. Thank you Murakami for creating the world of 1Q84!

The story carried me along. Yes it’s very long, but for me it flowed at a good pace and I was eager for each chapter... and to see the ending. But I also thought it left quite a few things unanswered and that dropped my rating from 4 stars to 3. But still, I think it was a good read.

1Q84. Always stuck in my head. This story will be forever..

What a lot of typing!. This long, and I mean looong, tale actually has some pretty skillful writing in it. The problem for me was its rather self-indulgent meandering plot. It starts out well enough with a woman climbing off a freeway in order to make a lethal date, all good stuff. Then we meet a gifted writer who just can't get his life together. Still on board with that. There's a cult. Fine. Then it just gets silly as hell with the Little People and descends into some kind of supernatural love story. And the point of this magical mystery tour was...? I am wondering whether the author just wanted to write a Really Big Book. Well, he succeeded. Now maybe he can just get back to writing half as well as his compatriot Natsuo Kirino.

A masterpiece. Captivating, thought provoking and very intriguing. Don't let the apparently slow rhythm fool you - you have to let yourself go and flow at the rhythm of this new world. A wonderful fairytale and love story, and a completely new perspective on fate and free will, good and bad. This book is one of the few i would call a real masterpiece.

Too many goofy stories in one book. Way toooo long, too many story lines and even though it is a super long book and I was hoping they would somehow connect the ending left too many of the stories unfinished!!! Don’t waste your time reading this. Horrible read in my opinion.

A long good boring read.. Fascinating story, but too long for it's own good. I will definitely going to read other books by this author.

Loved it!. I was captivated by the story the whole time. The twists and turns are impossibly to foresee; I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Highly recommend! I will be delving further into murakami's work after reading this.

Keep Going. First book is a slow burn but then you won’t be able to put it down!

Amazing. I could not put this book down. I’ve developed a new appreciation for Haruki Murakami — how his spare prose never gets in the way of the story, as well as his superb storytelling skills. He is one of the true masters of literature of our time.

Stunning read all the way through. The story starts a bit slow but reveals itself quickly. By the end you'll be envious of the early pacing.

Love it. My first Murakami book, love it.

Couldn’t put it down. Phenomenal!

Love it!!!. I'm only halfway through this book and think this is Murakami's best work so far! He describes everything in such great detail. I also love how the protagonists' worlds slowly converge. I'm totally absorbed!

The work of a genius storyteller. Not an easy read given its size. The events described sometime do not make any sense. Yet you cannot leave it. When it finished I felt that I was watching a very long movie. The characters were not descriptions on paper. They were real. I would recognize them if I saw them riding metro. Easily one of the most influential works of fiction I read and I want to read his other books. Thank you Mr. Murakami!

1Q84. Again Murakami leads me on a journey that I do not completely understand. It is just a literary journey and I do not have to understand it all, just like Tengo and Ammome don't understand there journey to 1Q84 or why they went there. This novel was addicting in its richness and detail of characters and truely wonderful read.

1Q84--a love story told in unexpected way. I feel depleted, a little sad with the fact that I can't no longer meet my friends Aomame, and Tango any more. It was a great pleasure for a long time to be inside of their hearts. But I know I they wouldn't disappear in my mind, I could let them visit me any time I'd love to. What a story teller, Marukami is! First my husband read, and me, now my college daughter into it too. I decide to give me a little mental space to absorb what has happened to me after reading this book. This kind of exercise is greatly appreciated after the masterpiece. It was a great journey to realize the love is the answer to all of us after all. Thanks Marukami!

absolutely phenomenal. READ THIS
