Pompei, 79 d.C. Mancano solo due giorni all'immensa eruzione del Vesuvio. Due giorni alla catastrofe che porterà alla morte, in una ventina di ore, una città magnifica. È un'afosa settimana di fine agosto. Lungo la costa i ricchi oziano nelle ville di lusso, nelle piscine, alle terme. Attorno a loro, invisibili, si muovono gli schiavi costretti a subire l'ingiustizia della propria condizione. La flotta navale più grande del mondo staziona pacifica al porto di Miseno, nello splendido golfo di Napoli.
In questo clima di calma apparente, solo un uomo è preoccupato: l'ingegnere Marco Attilio, da poco nominato responsabile dell'Aqua Augusta, l'imponente acquedotto dell'Impero Romano che rifornisce 250.000 persone in nove città del golfo. Giunto in tutta fretta da Roma dopo che il suo predecessore è scomparso misteriosamente, Attilio si rende conto che le sorgenti d'acqua, per la prima volta da tempo immemorabile, vanno di colpo esaurendosi e si mescolano allo zolfo. Grande conoscitore del bene più prezioso, l'aquarius - l'ingegnere delle acque - è convinto che a nord di Pompei, sulle pendici del Vesuvio, qualcosa di grave sia successo nel tratto principale dell'acquedotto.
Non c'è tempo da perdere: Attilio, coraggioso e incorruttibile, promette a Plinio, famoso erudito e comandante della flotta imperiale, che risolverà la crisi prima che i cittadini si ribellino. È conto alla rovescia: ora dopo ora, minuto dopo minuto, alla testa di un manipolo di uomini, Attilio si dirige al centro di un incubo lasciandosi alle spalle, nell'ultimo giorno di Pompei, un'umanità crudele, corrotta e derelitta. Scoprirà che ci sono forze che persino il più potente impero del mondo non è in grado di controllare.
