A Land More Kind Than Home by Wiley Cash Book Summary
A mesmerizing literary thriller about the bond between two brothers and the evil they face in a small North Carolina town—author Wiley Cash displays a remarkable talent for lyrical, powerfully emotional storytelling. A Land More Kind than Home is a modern masterwork of Southern fiction, reminiscent of the writings of John Hart (Down River), Tom Franklin (Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter), Ron Rash (Serena), and Pete Dexter (Paris Trout)—one that is likely to be held in the same enduring esteem as such American classics as To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, and A Separate Peace. A brilliant evocation of a place, a heart-rending family story, a gripping and suspenseful mystery.
For a curious boy like Jess Hall, growing up in Marshall means trouble when your mother catches you spying on grown-ups. Adventurous and precocious, Jess is enormously protective of his older brother, Christopher, a mute whom everyone calls Stump. Though their mother has warned them not to snoop, Stump can't help sneaking a look at something he's not supposed to—an act that will have catastrophic repercussions, shattering both his world and Jess's. It's a wrenching event that thrusts Jess into an adulthood for which he's not prepared. While there is much about the world that still confuses him, he now knows that a new understanding can bring not only a growing danger and evil—but also the possibility of freedom and deliverance as well.
Told by three resonant and evocative characters—Jess; Adelaide Lyle, the town midwife and moral conscience; and Clem Barefield, a sheriff with his own painful past—A Land More Kind Than Home is a haunting tale of courage in the face of cruelty and the power of love to overcome the darkness that lives in us all. These are masterful portrayals, written with assurance and truth, and they show us the extraordinary promise of this remarkable first novel.

A land more kind than homeI usually read at night in bed, once in a while I end up reading all night when very good story. But , not the case with is story. Not only did I read until I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer, but I had to keep reading it during the day also. That's how compelling this story is, you just have to know what happens next all the way thru the whole story!! It's that good! Thank you Mr. Cash for your superb writing and the way you present your story. I'm looking forward to a lot more of your books now that I've found you! A wonderful first or tenth novelI have read only half of this book and already believe that the author is truly gifted. It was difficult to take just a few moments from Jess to write this review. Whether you do or do not have any interest in the topic of this book, I believe you will be entranced by the writing. And now I will return to nine-year-old Jess to see if there is any resolution to his tragedy..Score: 5/5
BoringThough it had potential in topic, the author reveals all interesting and relevant facts in the first 50 pages. The next 150 pages are full of completely irrelevant, long-winded stories. Incredibly tedious to read..Score: 2/5
Wonderful storyI finished the book over two nights because I wanted to know what happened to poor little Jess. Was pulling for Ben the whole time and hoping for a better outcome. See? The characters were real for me right away. I am impressed by the writing of Wiley Cash and pleased to have had the book recommended to me..Score: 5/5

Just enough detailThis page turner gives just enough detail to get you hooked without getting bogged down. I generally don't like books that tell the same story from multiple perspectives, but this one does it right. You get to learn the whole story from different people without it being too repetitive. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it was a bit predictable..Score: 4/5
