Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn Book Summary

Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: she must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful thirteen-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims—a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story—and survive this homecoming.

Dumb. It’s a dumb story that isn’t well written. I only finished the book because I held out hope they would make this story into an HBO series because it was good, somehow. Sadly, I wasted my time. The ending is obvious and frankly insulting to my intelligence. Read if you want to complain about a book.

Hungry for more. Twisted and well written. Love Flynn’s work

My review on Sharp objects. I have given this book five stars because I personally really liked it, and it was the first book I was able to finish in a long while. I also enjoyed the characters and how well they were portrayed in the book. Gillian Flynn really knew how to depict each scene perfectly, too. Because each scene from the book was as if I was watching a movie or a show. And yes, I do know that Sharp Objects is also a show on HBO, and I like both the show and the book and finish both of them. But that brings me to my point where there were times I imagined a scene from the book and was so convinced it was, in fact, a scene from the HBO tv series because of how well I envisioned it in my head. For instance, there was one particular scene I read when Allen Crellin (the father of Camille and Amma) was sitting at the table in the morning and eating egg yolks in a bowl with a spoon. As to why he was eating raw eggs, I don’t know? But that scene in the book was so vivid and so imaginative in my head I thought for certain that I have seen that particular scene from the show itself.

Love the book. I enjoyed the book and continue to reread when I’m between new books. I do wish the website mentioned in the epilogue were changed or removed, as it leads you to a Japanese porn website..

Loved it.. So dark. And so good.

Just okay. Not her best. The characters seemed shallow and I never got emotionally attached to any of them. The story seemed to drag. I finished only to see the twist at the end.

WOW!. Talk about messed up. A really good story that kept me interested from start to finish. Definitely glad I read it.

Chilling. Honestly, this is the first book I almost put down. I actually had to take a mental break from the darkness. After telling myself that a good book cannot go unfinished, I continued. I’m so glad I did. Challenging the darkest parts of humanity, Sharp Objects keeps readers invested (even if that investment is painful at times) and curious.

Trigger warning. If you self harm this book is not for you. Overall a good book, would read again

A good read!. This may be the only book that I like less than its TV adaptation. However, I still think it’s a fine book, especially if you enjoy books that are on the darker side. The protagonist is complex yet strangely endearing despite the fact that she’s deeply troubled. Overall, I’d recommend Sharp Objects to anyone!

Excellent. Absolutely loved this book. I thought the story was beautifully told and on top of the great writing style that makes you want to keep reading, the ending isnt something you are just waiting for. The ENTIRE story is great. Thought the TV show did it SOME justice, did’t like what they changed in the show but the acting, setting and direction was great. Book was GREAT and the show was also, but personally prefer the book to the show.

Phenomenal read. Wow. This was a definite page turner for me. I read it fairly fast. I love how it wasn’t that long, very direct with the plot and very much to the point. Cannot wait to read more from Gillian.

Amazing. I finished this book days ago & I can’t stop thinking about it. A slow burn that kept my attention throughout. I did not want this book to end.

Blah. Got more enjoyment reading the plot through Wikipedia than reading the book.

Not a Twist, Felt Lazy, Slow Plot. I bought this book because of the reviews. The thought of a great plot twist and an intense mystery keeping me up into the night was exciting! Unfortunately it is not the first time I have been hit by the Bestseller effect, and have been left annoyed. It was probably only ever a bestseller because of how well the Author was known from other works. Honestly, the twist wasn’t a twist at all. I kept hoping a good ending would be worth the poor (or entire lack of) character development and slow plot, but sadly it was not the case. In addition, the story seemed unoriginal through and through. The author seemed to try to make up for the lack of plot with sex or sex related scenes, which to me is just lazy writing. In truth, the unhealthy habits of our protagonist (if she can be called that) and that of CHILDREN in the story just left the reader feeling dirty. Certain minor characters could have been more developed, but what do you expect when the main character wasn’t developed. I understand to an extent that is what the Author was going for, a woman broken by her horrible circumstances, struggling to make good choices. However, with the mystery narrowed down to 2 characters within the first chapters, no one left to root for, and the Author pushing unnecessary disturbing imagery (not in a way that relates to the plot), I wish I had not spent my money or time in this book.

Creepy and Suspenseful. This book keeps you guessing! It’s disturbing to say the least.

Definitely recommend. Very good read. Enjoyed the hints of romance and interesting details about each of the characters. Good foreshadowing along with a great plot twist.

The show doesn’t compare!. I watched the show and decided to read the book because I hated how the show ended. My friend said the book was really good and it was a quick read and explained a few things that you wouldn’t get from watching the series.

Not as impressed as I thought. I am typically interested in these types of books and was very excited to read Sharp Objects because of the great reviews I’ve heard/read. Unfortunately, I kept waiting for the book to get “good” as I read. I felt like the only exciting part of the book that everyone wants to read didn’t occur until the last 20 pages or so.

Good enough. I felt like this book drug on a little longer than necessary. Some elements they really focused on that I felt didn’t really add to the story, but kind of made it even moreweird. All in all, I enjoyed the read.

Hauntingly Spectacular.. Rich and damaged characters in a dark, gothic setting…One of the most amazing novels I’ve read. It stays with you long after finish.

One of the best. OMG the ending i mean WOW is there more

Would not recommend. Can see it coming the whole book. Seems like the same thing over and over and a lot of useless information.

Exciting. This book didn’t let me down. I liked not only the writing style but also the structure of the story. Over all a very good read.

Book first, then watch show.. I really enjoyed reading this book. Watched the tv series first, but of course the book was much better. Book was much more comprehensive and did a better job of demonstrating the MBP throughout.

Great Read. This was the first Gillian Flynn book I ever read and I have to say, I am hooked. The storyline, the writing style. It was all amazing. Flynn does an excellent job bringing you into the story. This is one book I wouldn’t mind reading again and again!

Amazing!!!!. It’s too good. Small town murder mystery.. MUST READ!!! It’s just too good ❤️

Good book. This book was good, but nowhere near as heart-stopping as Gone Girl. Perhaps that was the point? I loved the big twist/revelation at the end...did NOT see that one coming! I also loved that the main character was so realistically flawed. It made for an interesting ride!

Twisting Turns until the very end. I had to read this book before the HBO Series premiered. It didn’t disappoint. Page turner after gripping page turner.

If you love the series, you’ll love this book. I went backwards — I saw the HBO series with one of my all-time favorites, Amy Adams, before I read the book. I knew the plot and I still couldn’t put it down. Gillian Flynn did it to me with her other two and now she’s done it again. This book will hook you from beginning to end and since it’s so short, you can finish it in a few days. I really love how the end of her show/movie are different from the book endings. Really sparks a debate!

Read it. Amazing. Raw and nasty. Wicked

Amazing Storyline. This book was amazing with all it’s twist and turns, and I very much recommend you read it. If you want a story with thriller horror, a mystery, relatable characters, and some romance, you’ve found the right book.

Good Book. This is a good book and I was very satisfied by the ending. Why give it only four stars then? There were some wandering chapters after the midway point that added nothing to the plot and unnecessarily slowed the pace.

Kept you guessing. It took me a bit to get into this one. Overall I liked it, just slow starting. Slightly disturbing but interesting!

Addicting. I’m not a huge book worm, but I couldn’t put the book down! It’s a must read thriller that involves twists in turns. It is very dark at times but worth reading.

Love a good plot twist. This is the first book I’ve read all the way through in my whole life. Kept me interested the whole time.

Super Read. So dark. Absolutely loved it. The language and depth makes for an exciting read.

Eh. Good story but took 100+ pages to get going and the ending was kind of blah.

There are better books than this one.. Starts out interesting, but story becomes choppy. Too many actions by the main character are unbelievable.

What?!?!. Loved the ending.

AMAZING. I didn’t think I would like this book. It was hard to get into because it reminded me of a Hallmark movie at first. For some reason I kept reading. I’m so glad I did. The book is full of wild plot twists that make it almost impossible to put down!

A good twist. Most of the book was a little boring in my opinion. I didn’t really care for the main character so it was hard to like the book at first. But the desire to know who did it kept me going. I will say the twist ending and last few chapters rather made up for the rest of the book.

I couldn’t get past the treatment of the pigs at the slaughterhouse.. If you’re an animal lover you won’t like this book. Had to put it down.

Good hbo show. Hi

Amazing!. I love this author!! I could not put the book down .. she paints a picture of a truly dysfunctional family! It’s dark and all around a great mystery!!

Kept me locked in. I love a good mystery book. This book was definitely dark and some of the characters made you feel so uneasy at times. I loved to watch everything unravel. Not sure easy to read next after this one!

Don’t go there. Depends on how much ugliness you can tolerate. A truly nasty cast of characters, disgusting plot, more sex than needed to advance the storyline. Rather regret that I wasted time reading it.I tried to give it one star but it wasn’t possible.

Roller coaster ride!. This book takes off fast, I found it very hard to put down. Highly recommend.

Don’t bother. Should have flipped to the end mid way to save the time of actually reading but kept hoping for a twist. As soon as you think you know who did it- but this down because your correct.

Sharp Objects. The first book I read by Gillian Flynn was Dark Places and it had me from start to finish. This wasn’t as good of a book compared to DP for me, but still very good.

Inaccurate. The description of farming and processing is grossly inaccurate.

Sharp Objects!!!. This book is full of mysteries and twist of characters where it describe crime, blood, self harm and mental illness. If you are overly fond of mysteries and okay with psychotic issues of how the novel will evolve then this book is for you but if your not very fond of extreme mysteries and crimes then this book is not for you. I find this book disturbing but an okay overall novel. But it really depends on the readers, some love it and some is just okay with it.

So good!!. Fantastic writing, keeps you guessing til the end and then shocks the hell out of you.. Couldn't put it down! Highly recommended book!!

Creeeepy. Great read , creepy from start to finish. Would recommend for sure if you love a good mystery/thriller

Creepy. Good book. I don't know how the author thinks of these things but it keeps you on edge.

Decent. This book was ok. Expect it was extremely slow but the ending was very good. Didn’t see it coming.

Loved this book!. I couldn't put this book down. Skin crawling, nail biting thriller.

Creepily unbelieveable. Read the whole psychotic book. Something kept me there. Best points: It did have a many twists and turns. Negative points: Not much depth to characters and plot was hard to buy into so I could not empathize with the protagonist. One of the many bad mystery/crazy girls books of late.

Wow. This book was crazy amazing!

Good. Good

Loved it!. Great read!

A Riveting Thriller from Gillian Flynn. Sharp Objects is a deeply disturbing, yet incisive thriller that’s not afraid to go off the ledge. it’s brutal and real in its style, with some of the most memorable characters i’ve ever followed. ultimately, it’s a book about unpacking — unpacking repressed memories of a lost childhood; unpacking the tension between women who care more for getting on each other’s toes than painting their own. of course, in the end, they're all bound to fall down, and goodness is it riveting to read!
