Girl Walks into a Bar . . . by Rachel Dratch Book Summary

In this side-splitting memoir, the former Saturday Night Live star recounts the hilarious adventures and unexpected joy of dating and becoming a mother when she least expected it-at the age of forty-four.
Anyone who saw an episode of Saturday Night Live between 1999 and 2006 knows Rachel Dratch. She was hilarious! So what happened to her? After a misbegotten part as Jenna on the pilot of 30 Rock, Dratch was only getting offered roles as "Lesbians. Secretaries. Sometimes secretaries who are lesbians."

Her career at a low point, Dratch suddenly had time for yoga, dog- sitting, learning Spanish-and dating. After all, what did a forty- something single woman living in New York have to lose? Resigned to childlessness but still hoping for romance, Dratch was out for drinks with a friend when she met John.

Handsome and funny, after only six months of dating long-distance, he became the inadvertent father of her wholly unplanned, undreamed-of child, and moved to New York to be a dad. With riotous humor, Dratch recounts breaking the news to her bewildered parents, the awe of her single friends, and the awkwardness of a baby-care class where the instructor kept tossing out the f-word.

Filled with great behind-the-scenes anecdotes from Dratch's time on SNL, Girl Walks into a Bar... is a refreshing version of the "happily ever after" story that proves female comics-like bestsellers Tina Fey and Chelsea Handler-are truly having their moment.

I kinda want Rachel Dratch to be my new best friend. This book was relatable, interesting and insightful and made me laugh out loud on the subway at least like 3 or 4 times.

Girl walks into a Bar & life turns around!. I have always been a fan of Rachel's. Mainly because I work with her father & he always told me to check out her work. I did & she made me laugh. I love her story because I know what it means. It comes from her heart. I am in my 50's & childless. I felt exactly how she did before she met John. Only my "John" passed away in 2000. But life has different twists & turns & that's what this book teaches you. The chapter about her father,Paul, brought tears to my eyes. He is so proud of her. I am so happy for her. It's a good read. I couldn't put it down!

Rachel is the bomb!. I never took Rachel that seriously. Boy was I not paying attention to what comic talent was like. Buy this and enjoy.

Girl walks into bar... Steals our heart. Rachel Dratch has, in what reads as a conversation with a friend, done the impossible: she's made me look at both a career in hollywood and a life of parenthood as manageable, attainable, and (horror of horrors) desirable. The joy or terror in each overlapping chapter of her life is laid out with refreshing candor and wicked awesome humor. I love this book. And for anyone who will remember the reference I say, "I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats."

Funny and sweet. Great read that's more novel than autobiography, except you know Rachel's a real person and you want to root for her. The SNL behind-the-scenes parts are fascinating and I could identify with the new mom fears.

Compared to the Great Gatsby.... Faulty comparison, I know, but I never read these kinds of books and only came across it searching iTunes for SNL Season 25. This was my wake up Saturday morning, not ready to get out of bed activity. I enjoyed the development of the story leading to the finale. I read less carefully in the last 100 pages, but prior to that I read every word. Solid, heartfelt storytelling as a foundation with great comedic delivery when expected. You could almost see 'platoon buddies' performed onstage by Dratch and Poehler. Again, not dissing it with a 4, enjoyed it and learned some new things about Ms. Dratch. Particularly post-snl woes. Fun read. Great for Saturday morning. Relevant and well-written. Thank you Ms. Dratch! You're a champ!

Girl Walks into a bar. Glad I read it but nowhere near as funny as Tina Feys book. Hope to see Rachel on tv again!! SNL

Loved this book!. Really glad I bought it. It was such a fun read.

Lara Heisler. I enjoyed everything about this memoir. I can't recommend it highly enough. The funny parts Made me laugh out loud several times, and the "real" parts brought tears to my eyes. I look forward to telling my friends to read this book. It made me want to be friends with Rachel Dratch. Thanks Rachel, for all your work on SNL that made me laugh and for writing this wonderful book.

A fun read. Rachel Dratch was my favorite comedian on SNL, so it was nice to get to know more about her. Every new mom will be able to relate to the trials and tribulations of having a new baby and laugh at how down to earth Rachel is.

Great Read. Loved this book! Rachel's honesty about her career and Hollywood's expectations was refreshing. It is a shame that Rachel's many talents are not being utilized and her fans want to see her back on the screen. Her book is so funny as well as heartfelt. Thank you Rachel for making a very rainy, dismal day in the Pacific Northwest a lot funnier!

Very funny. Really enjoyed this. Very entertaining and made me laugh out loud at times. I feel like I know Rachel now. We both have fabulous gay best friends, get mistaken as lesbians, and know what it's like to stumble upon parenthood. Men may not relate to his book as well as women but I loved it. Someone said "not as funny as Tina Fey's book". Ouch. Like comparing apples and oranges. Great read.

Fantastic!. Loved, loved, loved this book!! Rachel Dratch is an amazing writer. Its cliche to say that I laughed til I cried, but I did. Such a funny, touching, terrific book!

Great book. This is a great book. Rachel is hysterical, honest and down to earth. I always loved her on Saturday Night Live and love her more than ever after reading her book. I am so happy that she was blessed with her "miracle" son. An amazing story. Never say never!

Great read!. I've always loved her on SNL. Awesome book and we can all relate.

Decent. Fun read. A little padded out, but overall a fun read. I wouldve liked to have learned more about her career pre-baby, like Second City, etc. baby stuff was cute, but very typical first-time parent stuff.

Rachel's book. Great book! I loved very chapter. I laughed, I cried, I "aww"-ed. Thanks Rachel for a great read and being such an awesome person!

Girl walks into a bar. Not as funny as I thought it would be.

Girl Walks into a Bar. This book was laugh-out-loud funny! Well done Rachel Dratch!

So candid, you can't help cheering her on. Rachel, thanks for sharing your story so openly. You definitely know how to put your funny "spin on it!" I recommend this book to anyone who has ever wavered in their self-esteem, which should pretty much be everyone.

Freaking hysterical!!!. I loved this book! Even though when i was at the gym people thought i was crazy for random burst of laughter on the treadmill!

Hilarious. I laughed out loud at least once in every chapter. I love this girl's humor and wit!
