Elon Musk Book Reviews

Walter Isaacson

Elon Musk by Walter Isaacson Book Summary

#1 New York Times bestseller

From the author of Steve Jobs and other bestselling biographies, this is the astonishingly intimate story of the most fascinating and controversial innovator of our era—a rule-breaking visionary who helped to lead the world into the era of electric vehicles, private space exploration, and artificial intelligence. Oh, and took over Twitter.

When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

His father’s impact on his psyche would linger. He developed into a tough yet vulnerable man-child, prone to abrupt Jekyll-and-Hyde mood swings, with an exceedingly high tolerance for risk, a craving for drama, an epic sense of mission, and a maniacal intensity that was callous and at times destructive.

At the beginning of 2022—after a year marked by SpaceX launching thirty-one rockets into orbit, Tesla selling a million cars, and him becoming the richest man on earth—Musk spoke ruefully about his compulsion to stir up dramas. “I need to shift my mindset away from being in crisis mode, which it has been for about fourteen years now, or arguably most of my life,” he said.

It was a wistful comment, not a New Year’s resolution. Even as he said it, he was secretly buying up shares of Twitter, the world’s ultimate playground. Over the years, whenever he was in a dark place, his mind went back to being bullied on the playground. Now he had the chance to own the playground.

For two years, Isaacson shadowed Musk, attended his meetings, walked his factories with him, and spent hours interviewing him, his family, friends, coworkers, and adversaries. The result is the revealing inside story, filled with amazing tales of triumphs and turmoil, that addresses the question: are the demons that drive Musk also what it takes to drive innovation and progress?

Elon Musk. An excellent read about the man who is the greatest innovator of our time. I was amazed at the insight and depth into Elon’s life. Very well written.

Another Masterpiece. Another masterpiece about the Nikola Tesla of 21 century, about the childhood of Elon Musk and his dream for the future of Humanity.

Change is hard. As shown in these reviews and by the author, Elon is a polarizing character. This is/was true of virtually every notable person throughout history, good or bad. Musk has a vision, intelligence and drive rarely experienced in modern times. While his lack of social skills, refusal to accept status quo, and never surrender approach results in discomfort or distaste for many, it is what is needed to break through the evolutionary stagnation of our era. I did not think the writing of this book was especially good. The events covered were all pretty much public record, even those that were not entirely correct. I would have appreciated a more in-depth look at the family, friends and lovers that seem to understand him better than anyone else and have remained loyal to Musk for so many years. The writing seemed less of an insider’s story than one pulled from media archives. Still, worth reading and I’m looking forward to “Part Two”.

Russian Pawn. This man is a real piece of garbage.

What. This man has left the worst impression on the world, why do this? Ghost author you should be ashamed of yourself. Elon has too low of an IQ to write a book and what ever ghost writer decided to agree to this - really?

3 days read. Plowed through, Finished the book this morning, fascinating read/listen. Perception was spot on and it makes complete sense but not the greatest company culture. Would hate to be the successor after him. I haven’t been able to get thru a book this thick ever; 688 pages/24 hours of listening time

The greatness of dreams. Hope Elon will be safe and healthy forever

Another monumental masterpiece.. Musk will be the most significant living thing to have ever existed. Taking life to another planet, saving our ecosystem and defeating the woke mind virus. Absolute masterpiece showcasing his constant hard work and decades of sacrifices for others

Isaacson has lost interest in writing. It's just typing at this point.. Isaacson mailed this one in. Lots of words but no content. Absolutely nothing new. I think I'll go read something interesting.

Musk is great. An enjoy full and interesting book.

Musk seems hard to comprehend, yet if anyone listens carefully, his Principles are clearly laid out.. This book is written by someone, from the wrong generation. All the amazement and disbelief about Musks behaviors and actions can be explained by a generational gap. Please let Ashlee Vance write another bio, that is fueled by the understanding of the generation, Gamers, New thinkers, the new Renaissance of those that know that an Optimistic Future of abundance is near. Those that see the old system needs to be overhauled, and that can do so by making superior products that become global bestsellers such as the Y-series. by Not understanding this gap, Walter does much more damage then good, by sketching a life that seems erratic and out of control. With this book, he misses the grand vision rolling out as we live, that transforms all Humanity through Musks vision.Listen more carefully, to the principles being laid out by Musk, and ignore the noise around it. There is a Power consortium trying to silence the new renaissance, one that will attempt to damage Tesla, and it is sad to see that this book is unintentionally contributing to that damage. Its a well researched book, but in my opinion does it paint a picture seen through the wrong lense. We are seeing a Rebel with a good cause. Why do we destroy our biggest Visionaries and leaders? The true biography, one that sets history books straight about Elon’s contributions, has yet to be written.

Elon. Extremely insightful to take a peek into the inner workings of a visionaries mind.

Great Read. Whether you like or hate the man, Musk has changed the world as if he has had 3 or 4 lifetimes. Isaacson lays his character, accomplishments and failures out to bare. Additionally as you learn more about Musk I find his tenacity inspiring and motivating. Worth your time to read!

A waste of time. The world needs to stop paying attention to this fraudulent, egomaniacal, incompetent, racist bigot. Avoid like excrement.

Interesting Genius. Seems like most geniuses are eccentric..interesting look at a brilliant visionary.

Insightful. Excellent. Musk granted Isaacson total access for 2 years and he was not allowed to even see the final product before release. The one star reviews are from the predictable Musk haters. If they could have put aside their bias they could have experienced an unflinching, honest portrait of a breed that only this country seems to still produce (and maybe not for much longer), the visionary risk-taker.

Another gem from the world’s best biographer.. Very good. Up there with Steve Jobs book. Nice work!

Elon Musk. Just like WI did on Steve Jobs, he gives us a unique inside and behind the scenes on how the greatest minds of our time work, live and ultimately created the world we live in and became trailblazers. Amazing read!

Musk - I love me!. He needs to get over himself and move on.

Another one. Why a notable biographer waster his time with a socially awkward man baby with mommy issues who was born into wealth and successful only because he surrounded himself with smart people. He has no people skills, is on the verge of already running one company into the ground, blew up a rocket and got a woman pregnant that was just beyond the reach of puberty and yet this is who many Alpha Genzs aspire to be as they flex their chests and power up their Teslas (many can’t afford)- the fake hair pursed lip aesthetic doest really help either (lolol) worst person/book of the year nominee.

not meat riding what y'all on?💀. Elon is fine the writing was kinda robotic but it is still a story worth telling a story which is true is a story worth telling

The life of a tech leader. This book is a well-written narrative of the tech giant that shaped the world today. His personality may not be perfect, but his life seems amazing.

Do not like the free sample…. …so not spending $s on the book. Elon Musk is brilliant, but not Steve Jobs, as the cover photo attempts to imply. Do not like the writing. Maybe Isaacson shares his own opinion too much. Just tell the story.

Great. Great summary … for now… what’s next?

Great perspective. The book is well written and describe genuinely what Ellon is about. If only we could analyze something these days with an truly open mind and unbiased perspective . It is unfortunate that some reviewers are so political. I am sure they did not read the book.

Wow. Well written and fascinating

Highly recommended read of a complicated man. A great read. I learned a lot about this complicated man. Walter Isaacson has crafted an amazing portrayal of Elon Musk, impressing on me that to understand another human you must, as the old phrase goes “walk a mile in his moccasins”. I feel that I’ve done that.

Less biography, more hype piece.. Walter has drank the Musk cult kool aid instead of doing his do diligence. As evident by the whole “musk turned off star link on Ukraine sub drones” story he’s already had to retract and alter due to pushback from Musk. Inaccurate is an understatement. There was such depth here to plumb, and he chose to dig into exactly none of it. Instead, he seeks to flatter and pump Musks monstrous ego at every turn.

The good, the bad and the ugly. Walter Isaacson is the best biographer I have ever read. And once again, he proves it as he unravels the quixotic, and remarkably successful life of Elon Musk. Write on Walter.

Hope to be alive for the sequel. Whether you like or dislike Elon Musk, he has done extraordinary things in “unique “ ways. The book is well written and worth the 600+ pages. I look forward to the next 600, as it will require a sequel.

Okay. You know he is the richest man with a net worth of 269.3B making him the richest man in the world, and he does own Tesla but like he bought Twitter and named it. X many people think that mean I’m better, but don’t forget about the woman note to self: why won’t he buy the whole country of North Korea, it’s not doing so good right now

Well written and candid study of a fascinating man. Loved the in-depth insight. Shy of 5 stars because the conclusion felt trite and overly subjective in relation to the approach taken throughout the rest of the book.

Best book I’ve read in a long time!. Hardcore like Musk. Insightful, balanced and transparent study of the greatest innovator of the age. Isaacson’s best!

Excellent read!. Incredible

Excellent book. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It certainly gave insight to who Elon Musk is, and how it has made him today. It shows certainly the good things that he has done, and also shows the bad. He certainly is an innovator and has his faults. I enjoyed this book and certainly suggest it to anyone who is interested.

Great Read. Enjoyed learning a lot about Elon, his quirks and what inspires him to do what he does. Would recommend to anyone wanting to learn about Space X, Tesla and how it all got started to what it is today. Oh and the whole Twitter thing! Definitely buy it and read it.

Great read on an iconic forward thinker. Elon needs no introduction. Gained a lot of insight into his persona and the way he thinks. This was excellent. Where will all this lead - only Elon knows for sure.

Fascinating portrait, a must read. Feels different from the other bios Isaacson has written, all excellent, so that had me a little worried at first, but his subject (Musk) is so interesting and consequential and essential to understand, and the author was given such a closeup, real-time front row view, that while different it is still an absolute fabulous read. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

A truly human story. It’s easy to pretend that all the success in the world was a simple clean step by step process. This book was a reminder to me that in many cases it was a messy journey with all the ups and downs that all humans experience. I’m grateful that this story was shared!

Don’t wast your time.. Not worth your time. Watching paint dry is far more interesting.

Isaacson’s worst work so far. If you’re a fan of Isaacson’s biographies, skip this one. It hardly feels like his usual standard of quality for research nor for writing style. If someone gave me this book and didn’t tell me who wrote it, I would have never guessed it was him.

Insightful. X-tra juicy 🧃🎢

Fantastic. One of the best book I have ever ridden

Elon Musk. It’s worth every penny and it was a great read

Why??????. i cannot fathom how anyone would want to purchase or read this book, about a narcissistic, egotistical, sociopathic man-child.. truly pathetic...

NAH. give us an update when walter’s done with retractions and done sucking off elon. extreme lack of credibility

Reality beats fiction. If an author of fiction wrote a book with Musk as a character it would seem ridiculously unbelievable.

Poker reviews are not a reflection of the book. This book would have five stars if it were not for the leftists who despise Elon. They conflate their opinions of Elon with the quality of the biography. This book does a great job highlighting the good and the bad. Elon is a revolutionary and we’re fortunate to have Walter document this story.

Issacson hits another home run with Musk’s biography!. He writes a fascinating portrait picture of one of the smartest men of our generation. As usual, he presents facts and opinions from the players in Musk’s complex life story, leaving the analysis to the reader. It was amazing reading the nuanced reality behind the news stories of this fascinating, controversial human being who is dragging us, kicking and screaming, into the future!

Amazing effort, unfinished journey.. Isaacson leaves no rock unturned when he covers a person. He must have spent torturous hours with Elon. Kudos to him. As for Elon, his personal relations and probably 40% of his work interventions are shameful and disrespectful. His attitude during the whole Twitter affair is not acceptable. I had read his biography by Vance earlier and as a curious person have been following him on the news. He does need treatment for the way he treats others. He is no doubt the most accomplished engineer/ business person of the last 3 decades. However, he misses focus and believes he can multi focus whatever he gets involved. Don’t know about Mars but if he stayed with SpaceX, (rather than numerous other endeavors) perhaps mankind would be settling on the Moon by now. The missing star for the book is for the last sentence. Isaacson leaves the reader with a not so subliminal message of “ yes he is sort of crazy but if he were not, he wouldn’t accomplish what had” Crazy does not justify being disrespectful and mean.

Loved it!. Incredible read.

Awesome. Inspirational

eXceptional. Walter Isaacson does a masterful job of describing the complexity of this never boring man! Elon is a gift to humanity and may become the most powerful individual to have ever lived because of his unique abilities, intuition and mission, perhaps driven by his love of “The Hitchhikers Guide to The Universe”. Amazing story warts and all!
