Elon Musk by Walter Isaacson Book Summary

#1 New York Times bestseller

From the author of Steve Jobs and other bestselling biographies, this is the astonishingly intimate story of the most fascinating and controversial innovator of our era—a rule-breaking visionary who helped to lead the world into the era of electric vehicles, private space exploration, and artificial intelligence. Oh, and took over Twitter.

When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

His father’s impact on his psyche would linger. He developed into a tough yet vulnerable man-child, prone to abrupt Jekyll-and-Hyde mood swings, with an exceedingly high tolerance for risk, a craving for drama, an epic sense of mission, and a maniacal intensity that was callous and at times destructive.

At the beginning of 2022—after a year marked by SpaceX launching thirty-one rockets into orbit, Tesla selling a million cars, and him becoming the richest man on earth—Musk spoke ruefully about his compulsion to stir up dramas. “I need to shift my mindset away from being in crisis mode, which it has been for about fourteen years now, or arguably most of my life,” he said.

It was a wistful comment, not a New Year’s resolution. Even as he said it, he was secretly buying up shares of Twitter, the world’s ultimate playground. Over the years, whenever he was in a dark place, his mind went back to being bullied on the playground. Now he had the chance to own the playground.

For two years, Isaacson shadowed Musk, attended his meetings, walked his factories with him, and spent hours interviewing him, his family, friends, coworkers, and adversaries. The result is the revealing inside story, filled with amazing tales of triumphs and turmoil, that addresses the question: are the demons that drive Musk also what it takes to drive innovation and progress?

Elon Musk. Nobody goes more in depth or does it better than Isaacson.

One of a kind. Love him or hate him, you’ll always be entertained, informed, or annoyed by him. I find myself fascinated by him - and trying to figure out why he does all the things he does - so many successful businesses, and what is his ultimate purpose after everything is said and done - this book gives some hints, and maybe help you understand Elon a little better. The biographer has done another amazing job, just as he did with Jobs and Franklin. I recommend this book highly. It truly makes you think and isn’t that every book should do?

Another one. Why a notable biographer waster his time with a socially awkward man baby with mommy issues who was born into wealth and successful only because he surrounded himself with smart people. He has no people skills, is on the verge of already running one company into the ground, blew up a rocket and got a woman pregnant that was just beyond the reach of puberty and yet this is who many Alpha Genzs aspire to be as they flex their chests and power up their Teslas (many can’t afford)- the fake hair pursed lip aesthetic doest really help either (lolol) worst person/book of the year nominee.

Less biography, more hype piece.. Walter has drank the Musk cult kool aid instead of doing his do diligence. As evident by the whole “musk turned off star link on Ukraine sub drones” story he’s already had to retract and alter due to pushback from Musk. Inaccurate is an understatement. There was such depth here to plumb, and he chose to dig into exactly none of it. Instead, he seeks to flatter and pump Musks monstrous ego at every turn.

3 days read. Plowed through, Finished the book this morning, fascinating read/listen. Perception was spot on and it makes complete sense but not the greatest company culture. Would hate to be the successor after him. I haven’t been able to get thru a book this thick ever; 688 pages/24 hours of listening time

Great perspective. The book is well written and describe genuinely what Ellon is about. If only we could analyze something these days with an truly open mind and unbiased perspective . It is unfortunate that some reviewers are so political. I am sure they did not read the book.

NAH. give us an update when walter’s done with retractions and done sucking off elon. extreme lack of credibility

The life of a tech leader. This book is a well-written narrative of the tech giant that shaped the world today. His personality may not be perfect, but his life seems amazing.

Isaacson’s worst work so far. If you’re a fan of Isaacson’s biographies, skip this one. It hardly feels like his usual standard of quality for research nor for writing style. If someone gave me this book and didn’t tell me who wrote it, I would have never guessed it was him.

Great Read. Enjoyed learning a lot about Elon, his quirks and what inspires him to do what he does. Would recommend to anyone wanting to learn about Space X, Tesla and how it all got started to what it is today. Oh and the whole Twitter thing! Definitely buy it and read it.

Okay. You know he is the richest man with a net worth of 269.3B making him the richest man in the world, and he does own Tesla but like he bought Twitter and named it. X many people think that mean I’m better, but don’t forget about the woman note to self: why won’t he buy the whole country of North Korea, it’s not doing so good right now

Another monumental masterpiece.. Musk will be the most significant living thing to have ever existed. Taking life to another planet, saving our ecosystem and defeating the woke mind virus. Absolute masterpiece showcasing his constant hard work and decades of sacrifices for others

Toothless. Don’t buy. It’s clear that Walter is fond of Elon, fine. My issue is that the writing is so boring. Almost lazy and robotic. Reads like a press release written by Kimbal and chat GPT.

Why??????. i cannot fathom how anyone would want to purchase or read this book, about a narcissistic, egotistical, sociopathic man-child.. truly pathetic...

Elon Musk. Just like WI did on Steve Jobs, he gives us a unique inside and behind the scenes on how the greatest minds of our time work, live and ultimately created the world we live in and became trailblazers. Amazing read!

Amazing effort, unfinished journey.. Isaacson leaves no rock unturned when he covers a person. He must have spent torturous hours with Elon. Kudos to him. As for Elon, his personal relations and probably 40% of his work interventions are shameful and disrespectful. His attitude during the whole Twitter affair is not acceptable. I had read his biography by Vance earlier and as a curious person have been following him on the news. He does need treatment for the way he treats others. He is no doubt the most accomplished engineer/ business person of the last 3 decades. However, he misses focus and believes he can multi focus whatever he gets involved. Don’t know about Mars but if he stayed with SpaceX, (rather than numerous other endeavors) perhaps mankind would be settling on the Moon by now. The missing star for the book is for the last sentence. Isaacson leaves the reader with a not so subliminal message of “ yes he is sort of crazy but if he were not, he wouldn’t accomplish what had” Crazy does not justify being disrespectful and mean.

Another Masterpiece. Another masterpiece about the Nikola Tesla of 21 century, about the childhood of Elon Musk and his dream for the future of Humanity.

Poker reviews are not a reflection of the book. This book would have five stars if it were not for the leftists who despise Elon. They conflate their opinions of Elon with the quality of the biography. This book does a great job highlighting the good and the bad. Elon is a revolutionary and we’re fortunate to have Walter document this story.

Great Read. Whether you like or hate the man, Musk has changed the world as if he has had 3 or 4 lifetimes. Isaacson lays his character, accomplishments and failures out to bare. Additionally as you learn more about Musk I find his tenacity inspiring and motivating. Worth your time to read!

Change is hard. As shown in these reviews and by the author, Elon is a polarizing character. This is/was true of virtually every notable person throughout history, good or bad. Musk has a vision, intelligence and drive rarely experienced in modern times. While his lack of social skills, refusal to accept status quo, and never surrender approach results in discomfort or distaste for many, it is what is needed to break through the evolutionary stagnation of our era. I did not think the writing of this book was especially good. The events covered were all pretty much public record, even those that were not entirely correct. I would have appreciated a more in-depth look at the family, friends and lovers that seem to understand him better than anyone else and have remained loyal to Musk for so many years. The writing seemed less of an insider’s story than one pulled from media archives. Still, worth reading and I’m looking forward to “Part Two”.

Interesting Genius. Seems like most geniuses are eccentric..interesting look at a brilliant visionary.

Don’t wast your time.. Not worth your time. Watching paint dry is far more interesting.

A waste of time. The world needs to stop paying attention to this fraudulent, egomaniacal, incompetent, racist bigot. Avoid like excrement.

Best book I’ve read in a long time!. Hardcore like Musk. Insightful, balanced and transparent study of the greatest innovator of the age. Isaacson’s best!

Very entertaining and easy to digest. Just like Bill Gates himself said, love him or hate him, men like Elon who innovate and care deeply for humanity only come once in a lifetime.

Musk is great. An enjoy full and interesting book.

Insightful. Excellent. Musk granted Isaacson total access for 2 years and he was not allowed to even see the final product before release. The one star reviews are from the predictable Musk haters. If they could have put aside their bias they could have experienced an unflinching, honest portrait of a breed that only this country seems to still produce (and maybe not for much longer), the visionary risk-taker.

A masterpiece.. Elon will be remembered throughout history. We are truly lucky to live in his time and witness his genius. Isaacson does an amazing job as usual with his subject. Presenting his subject always from a very critical perspective which a paramount with such powerful force that is Elon.

Hope to be alive for the sequel. Whether you like or dislike Elon Musk, he has done extraordinary things in “unique “ ways. The book is well written and worth the 600+ pages. I look forward to the next 600, as it will require a sequel.

Russian Pawn. This man is a real piece of garbage.

The good, the bad and the ugly. Walter Isaacson is the best biographer I have ever read. And once again, he proves it as he unravels the quixotic, and remarkably successful life of Elon Musk. Write on Walter.

What. This man has left the worst impression on the world, why do this? Ghost author you should be ashamed of yourself. Elon has too low of an IQ to write a book and what ever ghost writer decided to agree to this - really?

Elon. Extremely insightful to take a peek into the inner workings of a visionaries mind.

Reality beats fiction. If an author of fiction wrote a book with Musk as a character it would seem ridiculously unbelievable.

not meat riding what y'all on?💀. Elon is fine the writing was kinda robotic but it is still a story worth telling a story which is true is a story worth telling

Elon Musk. It’s worth every penny and it was a great read
