Affliction by Laurell K. Hamilton Book Summary

Micah’s estranged father lies dying, rotting away inside from some strange ailment that has his doctors whispering about “zombie disease.”

Anita Blake makes her living off of zombies—but these aren’t the kind she knows so well. These creatures hunt in daylight, and are as fast and strong as vampires. If they bite you, you become just like them. And round and round it goes…Where will it stop? Even Anita Blake doesn’t know.

Best in a long time. This is the best Anita Blake book that I've read in a very long time!

Affliction. Disappointed

Amazing. This is why I read and love books by Laurell K. Hamilton. Book was amazing!!!

Challenge, mystery, sex, suspense.. Laurell K Hamilton's latest Affliction contains all of her best features, complicated characterizations, challenge, mystery, sex and suspense. In accompanying Micah to the bedside of his dying, estranged father, Anita Blake is forced to deal with many of the challenges she often faces as well as a new wrinkle or two. There's plenty of police and executioner work, an unusual type of zombie, a nice, and slightly risky sprinkling of her excellent, signature sex and enough suspense to keep the pages turning quickly until the end, as well as revelations about both familiar and newer characters and Anita's maturing relationships with them and herself.

Four and 1/2 stars. It was soooo nice to read an actual book without a million pages of sex. This book definitely reminded me of the Old Anita with a chunk of the new grown up Anita. Definitely worth the read.

Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series. Love All the Books ! Awesome!!!

Anita Blake series. Love every book and always stay glued to it like I can’t get enough. Drama, fiction, suspense, reality along with vampires and animals that are so human!

Great read. A fantastic look into Micah's family. We've been asking for more background on her honeys and we got it! Also a good look into the Marshalls service and what might be happening for the Preternatual branch. As always, I love it when Edward gets to come play. Life is never dull when the two are together! Couldn't put it down and am looking forward to the next!

I wouldn't read it. Sounds like a wannabe World War Z but this one is boring

Excellent. All our favorites together in another exciting story by a fantastic writer who has kept us involved for 20 years in Anita's incredible life. Each story gets better and better. Can't wait for the next book to see what happens next. Thanks for keeping the story going and growing.

Affoiction. Great book and typical Hamilton novel. Ending was a bit anti clinatic though.

Could have been better. I usually can't put a LKH book down on the first read, but this was a bit of a let down. LKH normally have me breaking night to find out what's going to happen next, this book - not so much. It felt more like wrapping up a loose edge than anything else. I also missed Jason & some of the others. I've also been wondering when something will be done about Richard & his issues. All in all it didn't answer a lot of questions for me and left me kind of flat. Maybe I'll find more nuances when I read it a second or third time.

Great. Finally some crime drama with the love drama!! Wonderful book can't wait for the next one!!!

Loved it. I thoroughly enjoy the Anita Blake series! I love learning more about her men and can't wait until the book. Once I started reading the book, I couldn't stop.

SUCH A Letdown!. I've read this entire series. Affliction seemed like partial pieces leftover and thrown in with an unfulfilling bite of where the next level/story continuance should have evolved. I managed to enjoy it somewhat since I love the characters. Usually the Marshall hunts have an intensity that leaves you tense with the suspense and you cannot put the book down. I put this book down for a month before I read from the middle to the end. I NEVER do that! The only other book in the series that disappointed me was Micah.

Disappointed. This book was good, better than most of the recent ones. I have been an Anita fan for a long time and unfortunately this may be the last one I read. I miss the old mystery, butt-kicking, zombie raising Anita. There are SO many characters now I struggle trying to remember who is who. Let alone who out of all these characters is her lovers. Anyway! The story line was good. Some places in the book where sex was thrown in seemed a bit...unbelievable. The "world" is falling apart and she is doing the horizontal slide before and after most battles in the book. It was nice too see Edward and Jean-Claude. Oh how I have missed that character. (Only brief encounters and phone calls now) It was nice to see something that was changing the game on Anita. The story seem to gear up for a big battle (something epic like the fight against the Earth Mover) but there wasn't. The ending felt extremely rushed...leaving me feeling rather disappointed.

The One Most Fans Have Been Waiting For. For years Hamilton fans have been deeply divided between those who hate the amount of sex Anita Blake has and the lack of actual police work she can get done in between and those who love where the series has gone. In my opinion this is Hamilton's best book in the series since Incubus Dreams. It finds a happy medium between Anita's two worlds, and honestly I just missed the zombies. The story was interesting enough to have had me carrying the book everywhere and ending my nights with the weight of the book hitting me in the face as I fell asleep reading it. Two of my favorite parts were the absence of Richard and the appearance of Edward. The only reason I didn't give Affliction a full five stars was because the explanations of past story lines were overdone.

Has LKH lost her stuff?. I'm a big fan of LKH read all her books, but this one and the last few haven't been her best. This book starts off great and is great for most of the book, I was so into it, couldn't put it down... I was so ready for a big boss battle, I mean this vamp rivals the mother of death, then she kills him - the end. I was so let down at the end. Overall the book was good but the ending not so good. I give this 3 stars because the book had a good story but, the ending....SMH.

Affiliation. What an amazing read! One of my favorite characters and stories. If you pick anything to read this year please let it b LKH Anita Blake series!!! LKH you did it, again!!!!!!

Why do I keep reading this series?. It's like I should just send LKH 14.99 and avoid a huge waste of time. Usually these books and others like take only a day or two to finish (with all life' distractions) but this took me weeks because I didn't want to read about Anita and her threesome quandary. The first 1/3 of book is about her meeting Micah's family while holding his and Nathaniel's hand. So, they all love one another - but it turns out theirs isn't the only threesome. What is this? LKH justifications for polyamory? Well, that's the first 1/3, then you have to slog through her perspective of what cops think of her banging so many dudes (and a chick, which you know, confuses Anita now even though her dudes are doing each other) Zombies were great but another 1/3 of this book is Anita describing all these cops, were , vampire, humans to the point of it being poor writing, poor repeat descriptions, and not even interesting language. Other 1/3 is like, wow, who will marry? It was so easy to just flip through then sex scenes seeking some action. Edward is at least in it, but wow, I enjoy vampire/urban fantasy series but Cat&Bones & Black Dagger show improvements as series went on & more interesting and better written. First 6 Anita books were fun. So why have I read all, what, 21 of them? Be done with it already! Even Charlaine H. figured that it is best to just end it! I just don't think Anita books are worth buying and I will be borrowing from library while in between my other series books - but seriously, it's time for some old school fantasy after this POS. two stars for the zombie vampires which still aren't a new convention in her world.

Affliction. Way too much detail on how people look. You can develop characters without a page dedicated to their looks. I miss her older books.

Yes!. One of her best.

Good, but the ending far too rushed.. This was one of the best Anita books in a while, but the ending was just too rushed. All the buildup and then one small chapter and it was over. Could have been so much more as she finally let down all her control. So sad it wasn't that more.

Great Anita book!. This is more old school Anita and I loved it. Great story, love life and gore. Perfect mix. Thank you!!'

Loved it. It's sooo her. If you are complaining, you don't know her.

Sweet book. Keep them coming!

It's ok. A decent read but missing a lot of what made the earlier books so enticing. I do like Nicky and Wicked Truth a lot.

EEE cup?. The Anita Blake books is kind of an up and down thing for me, but they are entertaining enough. I decided to write this review because of the whole Anita having EEE cup size. It bothers me because after 23+ books of reading about Anita we hear of the ginormous breasts out of nowhere. She always said she was well endowed but for a 5'3" woman size D is well endowed, size EEE is something worth mentioning the first time you describe Anita. As a result it just felt like there was a distinct character change, to me it's the same as recasting a main character in the middle of a TV series. It just felt sloppy and like a whim for LKH. I seriously doubt when LKH was writing about Anita for the first book she was imagining this woman with EEE breasts. Also, with all of the physical activities and things Anita does, she would have been complaining about those breasts from the beginning and I doubt any of those SWAT vests would even fit her. I wear a D cup and I complain more then Anita. This whole EEE cup thing is just annoying because it is illogical and I think reflection of some kind of immature fantasy of LKH.

Ok ..... I've waited for this book and while I love the series this book was flat and way to detailed about the descriptions of the characters. it lacked story development and the ending was blah. I still love the series but this book will be low on my reread list

Affliction. I used to like Laurel K. Hamilton's books now I wonder how she's ever managed to release so many, it's like she doesn't even try anymore. She has so many character's in her books it makes it hard to feel anything for any of them, but most importantly this series has absolutely no end in sight and in order for this series to have some kind of meaning it needs to end eventually. The sex in these books are just cheesy and completely unrealistic, the tone of the book bounces continuously from serious to porno constantly and the really sad part is that I will continue to read them because I feel that I've invested too much time in this series to just walk away and feel like it was a complete waste. There is NO end in sight! There is no over arcing storyline All good things MUST come to an end without an ending the series has no real meaning.

Best Anita Blake book in awhile. Hamilton upped her game on this book. I've been following this series for years and have been starting to get annoyed by Anita's never-ending list of lovers and continuous sex. This book pulled the basics and the new concepts together really nicely. It made me fall in love with the series all over again. I love the fact that this book focused less on sex and more on people- and especially new paranormal crime drama. I can't wait for the next book!

Diminishing Returns. At this point, each book in the series contains less and less of a plot and more and more sex / relationship drivel. Wasn't the book before this one based on the main character missing her period? It's too bad. The author could have gone the Glenn Cook route and turned her protagonist into a dark god (remember Croaker and the Black Company?).

Finally. Finally, Hamilton is back. Great story line, a dash of the erotic, and progression in both Anita's and Edwards lives. I'm so glad Hamilton did a good job. I was about to write her off, but this proves she just had a low and is now back on the horse.

Affliction. LOVED this book. Going to go back and reread all of the others. I need something to do until the next one comes out!

Affliction. The story ended too soon... And need to know more about Jades and Anita relationship. Heck we need a new volume on the on going saga of Anita Blake I am already going through withdrawals.

Some Issues. I was really excited to see how long this book was (1200+ pages). But what a bummer to spend the first 300 recapping past stories and over-explaining. It was boring rehashing of past books . I felt like there were constant "asides" where Anita thought us through past stories. She had to explain how she met so-and-so... Who she saved from what... It broke me from the main storyline way too much. There were too many people having conversations throughout the story, and too many characters involved. I got lost as to who was talking and it made it hard to follow along. And the long titles! Arrrhh! Example (Richard, our Ulfrich, Wolfe King..) Anita even did this with dialogue to Micah! Come on now...why would anyone talk that way? It was just too wordy. I know that authors have to assume that this book may be the first book in the series someone reads..but come on! You don't need to say it every time you mention Richard's name. I was hoping for more tension between Anita and Micah because of his lies. The quick resolution made me wonder why LKH even bothered to put that segment in the book because it never went anywhere. Yes there is a difference between his lies and what he was doing and what Anita does for a living. It's the deception! My main beef was why create an issue and have it go nowhere? When XXXX dies, I didn't get any real sense of loss. It happened and we just moved on. Anita didn't really deal with it or acknowledge it again. Not even to XXXX's best friend later in the book. Richard has been MIA for a while now and I would like to check in on him. I didn't like that he went all Bisexual in the past few books, it seemed out of character. I would like to see him find a true alpha female that challenges him and helps him settle down. And I want Anita to have to pick her men and release some of the others. It's too much to keep track of at this point. Too many men and I can't keep them all straight..which means I can't care about any of them. As for the sex, it has gotten to be too much. It was fun at first because I actually felt like I knew some of her motivations for picking mates...now it's just all jumbled. I don't know who is who and I can't remember how she even met some of these guys. This book really had way too many characters to follow. I was lost at some points and had to go back and find who she was talking too. Edward..ok, I really like Edward but the more Anita talks about what a twit Donna is and how she doesn't care for his fiancé the more I wonder what it is about Donna that keeps Edward interested. Donna keeps getting written as a needy loser type that Anita can't respect so now I'm wondering what Edwards sees in her. I really think LKH should have simplified this book. I can't recall any of her other books feeling like homework! I never felt like her stories have lagged like this one did. It didn't feel like one story..more like the zombie story and a recap of past stories and odd interactions. And FYI, I never write reviews but after reading 21 books and following the series for so long I wanted to just add my 2 cents. I loved the zombie storyline it just felt a little disjointed as a whole book.

It's 2014. I feel like this author is stuck in the last century. Someone needs to tell her that men with long hair in ponytails isn't very attractive...
