Lucky Me by Sachi Parker Book Summary

Shirley MacLaine’s only child shares shocking stories from her out-of-this-world childhood with the famously eccentric actress
Shirley MacLaine is an Academy Award winning actress who has graced Hollywood with her talent for decades, known for her roles in The Apartment, Terms of Endearment, and recently the BBC/PBS smash Downton Abbey. Yet—as her daughter Sachi Parker can attest—growing up with the movie star was far from picture perfect.

The only child of MacLaine and her husband of thirty years, Steve Parker, Sachi’s surreal childhood began when she was sent to Japan at the age of two—though her mother would sometimes claim Sachi was six—to live with her mercurial father and his mistress. She divides her time being raised by a Japanese governess and going back and forth to L.A. to be with her mother, hamming it up on movie sets, in photo shoots, and Hollywood parties, even winning—and then abruptly losing—the role of Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird. As she gets older and attends boarding school in England and Switzerland, becomes a Qantas stewardess, and becomes involved in a series of abusive relationships she tries to unravel the mysteries of her childhood and her parents’ unconventional marriage.

Including twenty never-before-seen personal photos, Lucky Me is a fascinating look at Hollywood and what it takes to succeed there, the incredible ambition of Shilrey MacLaine and the fallout it had on her only child, as well as a woman’s attempt to understand and connect with her extremely complicated parents.

Excellent!!! Read!. This book has set you free Sachi. I believe EVERY word and pray that peace will follow you. I know from experience that some moms from that era were "detached" and we daughters had to find our own way . Yet in the end, we will still always love our moms.

Lucky me. I always thought Shirley was never acting! She really is that mean. My heart goes out to sachi and I hope for brighter, healthier days ahead.

Wow. Interesting read! Well written, engrossing and illuminating. As someone who adores the career of Shirley MacLaine, it saddens me that her career as a 'mother' has been so abysmal. Disappointed in Ms.MacLaine. (Seriously Shirley...a clone?Lol)

Magnificent!. I enjoyed this book immensely. I felt very identified with the mercurial parent image and the indifference. I'm glad that Sachi's life ended up well.

Interesting read. I read this book bec I was reading Shirley's book. Shirley's account made it seem she had an ideal mother daughter relationship - then I googled her daughter and found out the truth. Read this book to make yourself feel good about your own parenting skills. Because these are the two worst parents on the planet.

Lucky Me. Great biography. So well written. I did not want it to stop. When I finished I said a prayer for Sachi. She is an amazing woman. A real survivor.

Loved it!!!. Great read!

Lucky Me. I read the preview and instantly bought the book. I loaded it onto my iPad and that was it! I was hooked! I couldn't stop reading it. Sachi is an amazing person who wrote HER life story. What her experiences were. Yes, there is her famous mother. But like anybody else, her mother is a human being. Famous or not. I am grateful that Ms. Parker, realizes that she can't change her mother. She is who she is and her personality and character will not change. That is the greatest sadness. Wanting and needing to be loved, by the people who are supposed to love you. Questioning yourself, "What have I done or not done?" Over and over through your life and getting no where. No answer. Sachi Parker came to the knowledge that she did all she could do, to bond with her mother. Most of us feel it is inherent to love our children unconditionally. Sadly, some parents NEVER grasp this. The wake that it leaves in their children's life is devastating. Like me, I hope this book is read all over the world. Take from it it's life's lessons. There is something we can all relate to. I wish the very best for Sachi Parker and her beloved children. Thank you Ms. Parker for writing this book!

Lucky Me. It does not surprise me in the least the type of mother Shirley Mc Clain was/is. Her daughter"s story broke my heart. She is a survivor in he truest sense of the word.

Lucky Me. I am shocked that Shirley MacLaine is truly stupid and insane. I have followed her for years ... And now I feel stupid for admiring her ...
