Verdi by Franz Werfel Book Summary

Colto nel periodo più intenso della sua vita, quello che precede la creazione dell’Otello, il grande musicista italiano viene rievocato in questo libro in modo davvero appassionato. L’azione si concentra in pochi mesi nella spettacolare cornice della Venezia di fine Ottocento che Wagner aveva eletto a palcoscenico dei suoi trionfi. L’autore immagina che Verdi vi si rechi in incognito a studiare il rivale, convinto che la propria vena creativa sia esaurita. Werfel descrive con grande realismo e maestria l’elettrizzante atmosfera del mondo musicale italiano di fine secolo e la pittoresca vita popolare veneziana, creando a una serie di personaggi secondari che con la loro vivacità psicologica e narrativa contribuiscono a conferire pieno rilievo all’unico vero protagonista. Il conflitto tra i due musicisti diventa la chiave interpretativa del romanzo fino a quando Verdi, riacquistata la consapevolezza della propria arte e della propria indipendenza spirituale, si recherà a incontrare il grande nemico-amico e apprenderà della sua morte. In occasione del bicentenario verdiano un grande romanzo che in un magistrale intreccio di storia e fantasia celebra il genio e l’opera del compositore e crea la leggenda di un mito.
