The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand Book Summary

The revolutionary literary vision that sowed the seeds of Objectivism, Ayn Rand's groundbreaking philosophy, and brought her immediate worldwide acclaim.

This modern classic is the story of intransigent young architect Howard Roark, whose integrity was as unyielding as granite...of Dominique Francon, the exquisitely beautiful woman who loved Roark passionately, but married his worst enemy...and of the fanatic denunciation unleashed by an enraged society against a great creator. As fresh today as it was then, Rand’s provocative novel presents one of the most challenging ideas in all of fiction—that man’s ego is the fountainhead of human progress...

“A writer of great power. She has a subtle and ingenious mind and the capacity of writing brilliantly, beautifully, bitterly...This is the only novel of ideas written by an American woman that I can recall.”—The New York Times

Sick!!. Best book of all times!!!!

Ripoff. Way too expensive

Too expensive. Amazing book. I find it highly entertaining reading the comments which suggest that you should not buy the book on moral grounds. Ignorance is apparently rampant and possibly contagious. People are simply afraid of social Darwinism.

Why is ebook more than print?. This is exactly why the big six deserve to go out of business. They are still clearly bickering about payment prices even though a new model is clearly needed and expected by readers. This is an OLD book, printed in 1943 I believe, and the price should reflect that. Instead, you pay MORE (currently $12.99 while print is $9.99) because they still don't know how to pick a bestseller (20% of books they publish actually make money, 40% break even, and 40% lose money). They make so little money now, that they cannot even afford to promote the books they do publish unless it's guaranteed a bestseller. E-books should be cheaper than print books for many reasons. First, no printing costs means it's cheaper to produce. Yes, we know you have to put in multiple formats for pc, tablet and mobile reading but that's not exactly hard these days. If you also factor in the cost of distribution, it's MUCH cheaper. Then add savings for books not needing to be returned or the costs to have them sent back. Also note that it doesn't require a bookstore so that's an additional savings of 35% of the book amount. I think we all get the picture at this point and it's time they change their ways of doing business because we clearly have a new way of doing business as well. Of of the main disadvantages of e-books is that you cannot transfer it to another person like you can just give a print book to another person. This makes their value less than print, and the price should also reflect this. I've purchased several copies of this book because I wanted others to read it. I only wanted a digital copy because it's hard to read the words at the beginning and end of a printed book because they don't format it with enough margin to make it easy to read. It's doable, just not easy. For those that have never read this book, i'll just say that it's my favorite book of all time. It's one of those books I wish I had written. I can't give it higher praise than that.

A truly inspiring piece of literature. To say this novel is thought invoking would be an understatement. Ayn Rands philosophical views in generate questions that should be answered about man and his role in society.

Price?. As an architect I've been told by many people I need to read this book. But $18 is still far too much for a digital copy. Just imagine how much money they'd make selling the book for $8 instead of turning people away with their higher prices.

Price is Right. I'm very sad because I've just finished reading THE FOUNTAINHEAD and I know I'll never read another book that has such a profound effect on my life(!) Mrs.Rand wrote a book that was 50 years ahead of it's time and will be inspiring people forever!!!

Priceless. Ayn Rand readers know that price is immaterial when compared against the immeasurable wealth of enlightenment and perspective achieved by reading her books

Capitalism. I find it ironic how many lovers of this book are complaining about the price when much of the message of Rand's ideology point to the freedom of capitalism. Therefore those who supposedly believe in Rand's view should be fine in that Penguin or Apple should charge whatever it wants. Herein lies the hipprocracy of many of Rand's followers: sounds great until it affects you personally.

Priceless. The price has dropped to 18 dollars at the time of me writing this. I bet thats still pricy compared to paperback prices, but at any price its worth it... Whether you have to read it on an iPad or have the ability to go pick up a physical copy(probably better), this book will be worth it. It is endlessly inspiring.

Publishers hate eBooks. Even Penguin, who determined this laughable price for the eBook edition, sells this as a mass market paperback for $9.99. Clearly that book costs them more per copy than the digital version. Why do publishers penalize the customers who reduce their costs?

Parasites set this price. Such hypocrites for selling this particular book at an outrageous price! Apple Corp. is built on many of the things written in this book. How disappointing, I just wanted an extra digital copy to add to my two hard copies that were collectively less than this digital copy.

Crazy price. Just wacko, that's what the price is. Or evidence that price need not equal marginal cost when there's market power!

Needs price reduction!. Anything above ten bucks for an ebook is ridiculous, in my opinion. Sure, I love this book, but wanting to finish reading this on my phone without paying so much is tearing me apart! Do something about thisssss

Amazing book. But reading it on an iPhone destroys its essence. Boycott ireaders. Books w/o batteries.

Too much $$$. Are you kidding me... $28. Why would anyone pay this much when you could go out and buy a real copy for a fraction of the price.

Motivating. Great book with life metaphors throughout the plot

The Fountainhead. Any Rands relevance today through the Fountainhead is far more than a story of her time. Her book, The Fountainhead, truly describes much of what is happening with the new technologies, computers, electronics, etc., world, and I think, the “new” political environment being forced upon the public by the extreme left. This book is without a doubt one of the most relevant of today. Being “politically correct” is among the worst “second-hander” philosophies being foisted upon society. It is an element that has created fear to speak openly and fostered exactly the themes presented in ‘The Fountainhead’. The next step, if society will be ‘1984’, which seems to be just around the corner. One of the most illuminating books I’ve ever read.

Wow. 28 dollars? Great book but a 28 dollar digital copy is outrageous. This should be 8 or 9 dollars MAX.

Bad update!. Last update corrupted the file. Please fix!

Capitalist propaganda garbage. I said what I said

I was going to buy.. Was going to buy this e-book, but the price is ridiculous. Digital copies should cost much less; how much does it cost to produce these copies?! If I can go out and buy the actual book for less than the e-book, something's very wrong.

Great Book. A wonderful example of Objectivism and how she incorporates it into ther books. Not only is she a brilliant writer to study and learn from, but she also writes entertaining books you don't want to put down.

Decent book.. Similar to atlas shrugged, the ideas in the book are pretty interesting and refreshing. The book is poorly edited, which is also an issue with atlas shrugged. The characters in the book are pretty exaggerated and so is the plot. Ok read overall.

Numerous Typos. Seriously, if you're going to charge a premium for an ebook, couldn't someone be bothered to proofread it? There are multiple OCR errors in the text, and that's in the sample alone.

The Standard. 80 years after its publication and it still is the standard for the individual vs the collective. All the collectivist catch phrases are still used to this day in government, in churches, and organizations that seek to gain some form of value from some else’s effort.

Hey! A review that doesn't have to do with price!. Ayn Rand's knee-jerk, corporatist ideology runs rampant through all of her work. As with every other book she wrote, this one is heavy-handed and about as subtle and beautiful as a hand grenade. Save yourself some time and money and read a book that wasn't written by someone who lived so long under totalitarian communism that she ran for the farthest corner of the map, anarchical capitalism.

You're crazy. Anything over ~$8 is insane. Oh wait, we're talking about Penguin...

Incomplete book. Incomplete book - only the first few chapters are included in this version

Ridiculous. 28!!! I will hate penguin forever for doing this to such a great book. Do they remember the word called "ethics" in business?

Price dropped by $10. This book used to be $28. Now it's $18. Still seems a bit much when compared to most other e-books on the market.

Devastatingly Brilliant!. A must read...and it will stay with you through time. Affirming, unforgiving, well-weaved... Loved every aspect of it! My only regret: I wish I had it read it sooner.

Facts. Best book ever written

Wake Up...$28.00???. One of my favorite books of all time but I wouldn't pat that price for a signed first print copy. Very frustrating.

Price. Seriously the prices are totally inconsistent with the market place! I would rather buy a kindle or simply go old fashion and snag a real book.

Masterpiece. Romantic, intelligent, and clear, this is a treasure of humanity.

Common price. The price for the iBook version is exactly the same as the Kindle version. I just checked.

Wow.. No fool is going to pay this for a digital copy.

Good read. Long, but very easy read, and very entertaining. It definitely keeps your interest, but since it's touted as a classic by many that's surely no surprise. There were a few chapters that almost seemed to be "filler". These were the ones primarily involving secondary characters. I suppose the intent was to fill in some background and/or further develop Toohey's behind-the-scenes manipulations, but those chapters didn't add a lot for me. I suspect there is a LOT of literary symbolism, archetypes, and other things that literary scholars (and high school teachers) would have a field day with, but this book can certainly be enjoyed just for pure pleasure, too. And, perhaps that's what makes it a great book.

Ripoff. Why is the digital version more than double paperback? $10 is fair, $20 is a ripoff.

The classic line. Life changing, simply put.

Terrific. Ayn Rand doesn't make me say, "that's an interesting idea" or, "she might be on to something." She simply makes me say, that's true. I can't find a hole anywhere in her logic. I believe her ideals to be truth and I hope everyone will read her work.

Outrageous price. What's going on?

Way too expensive.. I see that it has dropped $8 to $20, but still, for an e-book, that's ridiculous. The woman is dead for christs-sake, so you don't have to worry about supporting the artist, just greedy business men. You can buy this at a book store for half that price. Or borrow it from a friend for free. A lot of people have it. Ask your parents/grandparents. Don't waste your money on a soft copy of the book, unless it was reasonably priced.

Wonderful. It just keeps getting better and better as you read on. Never a dull moment if you look into the underlying meaning of all the conversations. I was debating if I should read this book or not and I'm glad I did. Don't miss out! Read it, Howard Roark is a character you want to meet!!!

Classic must read for all free people. I'm glad that the price has come down, but this book is really worth having.

Greed. Thank you, Free Market, for allowing me to purchase this book for MUCH cheaper elsewhere. I don't know where Leonard Peikoff gets the nerve charging so much for a digital download. He is a proven liar and thief, just ask the Library of Congress.

Awesome. A book that should be revisited throughout life. Such a great motivator for the creators and the producers of the world we live in. It takes courage to be independent and it is worth the struggle. We need more Howard Roark’s in society today.

Ripoff. The book is excellent but that price is absurd.

Must read. This was an excellent read. Very insightful and motivational fiction story that is well written
