Clytemnestra Book Reviews
Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati Book Summary
"Fans of Circe and Elektra should pick up this powerful Greek myth retelling." —Cosmopolitan
For fans of Madeline Miller, a stunning debut following Clytemnestra, the most notorious villainess of the ancient world and the events that forged her into the legendary queen.
As for queens, they are either hated or forgotten. She already knows which option suits her best…
You were born to a king, but you marry a tyrant. You stand by helplessly as he sacrifices your child to placate the gods. You watch him wage war on a foreign shore, and you comfort yourself with violent thoughts of your own. Because this was not the first offence against you. This was not the life you ever deserved. And this will not be your undoing. Slowly, you plot.
But when your husband returns in triumph, you become a woman with a choice.
Acceptance or vengeance, infamy follows both. So, you bide your time and force the gods’ hands in the game of retribution. For you understood something long ago that the others never did.
If power isn’t given to you, you have to take it for yourself.
A blazing novel set in the world of Ancient Greece, this is a thrilling tale of power and prophecies, of hatred, love, and of an unforgettable Queen who fiercely dealt out death to those who wronged her.
"Crackles with vivid fury, passion, and strength." —Jennifer Saint, bestselling author of Elektra and Ariadne

Brutally wonderful. Such complex characters and winding stories. I’m glad I took the chance and added this book to my collection. It was such a great read. Highly highly recommend!!
A queenly writing. I have long admired the queens of Greek, Spartan, and Roman legend, but never before have I seen a writer dig so deeply to unveil what lies beneath the marble perfection. Beautifully crafted, and captivating in its pure simplicity of form. Prose that leaps from the pages to wrap the reader in living characters and vivid scenery. Clytemnestra is queenly writing, and I look forward to my next foray into this writer’s den.
Love it. I really enjoy this book. I couldn’t put it down. It does have explicit scenes and certain events that causes harm to women. I enjoy the story telling. The way it was written and I never heard of this queen. And it made me happy, sad for everything she went through. I really enjoy this book.
It was such a good book. This book honestly took me by surprise. I will say that I was not expecting to like the book as much as I did because the beginning of the book did start out a little slow. I was also confused about a certain character which made me not like the book at first. But as the book went on, I couldn’t stop reading. Clytemnestra and all her pain was hard to read about, but I couldn’t help but admire how strong she was the whole book. I also really liked how the book didn’t just focus on Clytemnestra’s vengeance, it also demonstrated how strong family bonds can go. I think the author did a phenomenal job in expressing the different characters emotions because it never felt like a single character was flat. I really appreciated how she portrayed Helen; the author actually made her a real person instead of just a woman that was beautiful. Overall, this book was phenomenal, and for anyone who likes Green mythology, this is the book for you.
Whoa!. Impossible to put down. Beautifully written!
Fascinating. So well done. I love that time period. I felt as if I were there.
A Must Read. LOVED it. I love Clytemnestra’s anger, sad for everything she had to go through, but content she made it to the end and carried out her plan. I love how humanized Constanta made many of the women in this book feel.
Absolutely LOVED this book. Absolutely LOVED this book! One of my new favs. I recommend reading alongside Song of Achilles my Madeline Miller.
So good. So good, I couldn’t put it down. Finally a different type of heroine!
