Kentucky by Lee Cole Book Summary
Kurz vor der US-Wahl 2016 kehrt der junge Owen Callahan zurück ins heimatliche Kentucky und zieht bei seinem Großvater ein. Es ist nur ein Kellerraum, aber Owen will Creative Writing studieren und muss sparen. Um die Studiengebühren erlassen zu bekommen, wird er Hilfskraft in der Gartenbauabteilung der Universität.
Am College lernt er Alma kennen. Sie hat schon ein Buch veröffentlicht, ist aus reicher Familie und hat ihren ersten Lehrauftrag. Die beiden werden ein Paar und kommen doch aus unterschiedlichen Welten. Alma amüsiert sich über seinen Akzent, sie selbst hat keinen, dabei ist sie Kriegsflüchtling. Ein Besuch bei seinen Eltern gerät zum Fiasko. Bei ihren läuft es nicht viel besser: Die bosnisch-muslimische Familie ist geradezu rührend amerikanisiert, doch am Ende erzählen die Eltern vom Grauen des Krieges. Da steht Owen und Alma der letzte Vertrauenstest noch bevor: Er gibt ihr seinen Roman zu lesen. Er handelt von zwei Familien, einer aus Kentucky, einer vom Balkan.
Alma liest, und im Graubereich zwischen Literatur und Leben kommt es zu einer Explosion …
