Rebecca Madeline Mackenzie, Becky to most, is dealing with many issues: her still bruised heart, her mother’s matchmaking efforts, her cousin’s annoyances, and those ghosts who tag along revealing much about a serial killer. This fifth book in Harper Lin’s Southern Sleuth Mystery series adds to an already compelling series. A cozy intensity with multiple murders challenging everyone’s sensibilities, a roaring era, and all the light and dark that Savannah can offer. I have always enjoyed Harper Lin’s writing style with her use of descriptive language, banter fit for the time period and varied personalities, a realistic mother/daughter dynamic, and a very clever, use of the paranormal with fascinating creatures, mythology, and a twist on evil hiding greed, fraud, and murder. Kitty, Becky’s mom, definitely challenges one’s patience and Fanny can be exasperating, but Becky is strong-willed, clever, and determined not to let any obstacle keep her from finding the truth and defeating the dark.
