The Women by Kristin Hannah Book Summary

A #1 bestseller on The New York Times, USA Today, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times!

From the celebrated author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds comes Kristin Hannah's The Women—at once an intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided.

Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is over-whelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day is a gamble of life and death, hope and betrayal; friendships run deep and can be shattered in an instant. In war, she meets—and becomes one of—the lucky, the brave, the broken, and the lost.

But war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America, to angry protesters, and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam.

The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.

The Women of Vietnam. Kristen Hannah has written a captivating story of a nurse serving during the war in Vietnam. Her journey is interesting, detailed, historically accurate, and true to the emotions experienced by many Americans. This is the best book I’ve read in years.

Incredible story. As good, if not better, than The Nightingale. Wonderful storytelling and an unforgettable glimpse into the world of these unsung heroes.

The Women. One terrific book

Fantastic book!. Written so well, a story that needs to be told…….remembrance matters

Absolutely loved. Could not put down. This book will stick with me for a while.

The Women. Kristen, you never let us down!

What a beautiful story. This book made me feel like I was actually there and right along side Frankie and her fellow nurses.

The Women. Excellent book!! Couldn’t put it down.

FABULOUS. EXCELLENT STORY. EXCELLENT wRITING. OUTSTANDING AND FULLY DEVELOPED CHARACTERS. OUTSTANDING AND FABULOUS WRITER. I LOVE YOUR NOVELS I HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING THIS BEAUTIFUL AUTHOR ‘S GREAT NOVELS. LADY EVE FREEPORT NEW YORK MARCH 5, 2024

Couldn’t put it down. Loved how the story followed Frankie after the war. So much heartbreak and yet such good friends to lean on.

Recommend!!. I couldn’t put the book down - very well done telling of the little known story of combat nurses in Vietnam and life upon their return, through the experiences of Frankie McGrath. A fascinating depiction of Vietnam and the whole Vietnam/anti-war era, especially the impact on the women who served. I have to admit that some parts made me cry as I was so invested in the characters.

Incredible. I had a cousin who did 5 tours as an Army Nurse in VietNam- she said she couldn’t leave her boys, until she was pushed to leave. It truly messed up her mind. But she was always a hero to me

A perfect tribute to the women who served.. Heart wrenching, honest, beautiful and impossible to put down. A perfect tribute to the heroes, the men and the women, and their families. As a daughter of a Vietnam infantry soldier who had a lifelong struggle with PTSD, I connected with this book is so many ways. I LOVED it! Thank you for writing it.

Best Book Ever. This is by far one of the best books I’ve ever read! No other story could have told the story of the women of the Vietnam War better. It had details of the whole experience as well as the aftermath of their coming home. They were unseen in so many ways. Even by their supposed comrades. It was so excellent!!!

AMAZING!!. This has to be Hannah’s best book yet!! I was riveted by the storytelling and learned new things about a war my father proudly served in. Thankful for all those who served and who were willing to share their story.

Incredibly Empowering. I haven’t read any other Kristin Hannah books (yet) but if they’re all as excellent as this novel, her writing will soon be taking up most of my time. Not only is this book incredibly insightful into the lives and stories of women who are under appreciated for their service in Vietnam, but it also illustrates how easy it is to let yourself slip into complacency when it comes to self care and mental health. Truly inspirational. Everyone should read this book.

Kristin HANNAH DID IT AGAI !. An incredible read. Could not put this book down.

Unforgettable. Every woman who grew up during the Vietnamese War years should read this.

The Women. Absolutely engaging, could not put it down. Cheering for Frankie until the end, and what an ending . Highly recommend this book.

Thank God for these nurses. As a child of the 60’s I never really felt the horrors of the war. This brought such a closing for me as the war took place but many were oblivious to what really took place.

Outrageous and Amazing. Very enlightening story. Page turner. Made me sad, angry, hopeful all in the same chapter. My heart goes out to all who experienced the horrors of Vietnam. Looking forward to visiting the DC memorial again with a new understanding. Should be a required read.

The Women. Very good book. I was inspired by the women who sacrificed for all the soldiers and themselves during the Vietnam War.

The Women is amazing!. Love Hannah’s account of nurses in Vietnam and then the trauma of being an army nurse reintroduced to American life after coming ‘home’. Her storytelling is raw, honest, and hauntingly accurate of dealing with grief, addiction, and PTSD. She weaves a tapestry of healing, compassion, and survival! Her detailed descriptive accounts is so realistic and powerful. I could not put this down!! Much praise after such a powerful book!

A story that needed to be told!. Having been of the generation who had so many of our friends and classmates go to this war. Some came back and some didn’t. Many were broken and some still are. The narrative from the nurse and what she endured at the front, on coming home, in addiction, and finally healing should resonate with us all. During those years the fight for women’s rights was new and a steep hill. The denial by men that women were even veterans gob smacked me. A meaningful read but also an emotional one.

Amazing.. Riveting. I lived thru this time and didn’t know about these brave women. And the cist

Anonymous. Outstanding! Captivating! Heart wrenching.

Loved it!!. Perfectly written! Would love to see this made into a movie!

Beautifully written. Incredible story that I could not put down. Wave of emotions throughout the entire book and I was constantly on the edge of my seat.

Unbelievable. I grew up next to Travis Air Force Base in California. Heard the humming of the cargo planes. Watched the hearses stream past my neighborhood, heard Taps play with the 21 gun salute. This is an amazing tribute to the women that fought in that war. Thank you for bringing their stories to me. Beautifully written book.

A must read for the generation torn apart by this war. Once again a book that will make you laugh, remember and cry bitterly. One of the best books I’ve ever read

Excellent. Untold stories of women in war. A page turner.

I held my breath until the end. This book is probably Hannah’s best most thought provoking. I couldn’t put it down. It will make you cry and laugh but most of all honor the women.

Loved it. A story that needs to be told and heard

A fantastic book. One of her best, after Four Winds, in my opinion. Parts of it are not for the squeamish, but like with all her other books, KH weaves a masterful tale while opening my eyes to parts of the Vietnam story I never knew.

There were no women in Vietnam. Oh, but there were. This is an important story for us all to read, but especially women. Is some of the plot predictable-yes. But that doesn’t minimize the importance of the story and the need for us all to remember the sacrifices of the men (boys) and women who went to serve their country and regrettably suffered the aftermath.

SO GOOD. This book is amazing. Heartbreak at every turn, but so rewarding. Gives me a fascination and appreciation for the soldiers of the Vietnam War that I had never, ever in my life experienced before. Highly recommend.

Simply incredible. I never write a review, but I feel that I need to express how amazing this book is. Kristin really makes you understand the gravity of having an outlet to talk about the incredibly hard things. She is my favorite author, but she has truly outdone herself in this one.

Moving.. So thoughtfully crafted. I vaguely remember Viet Nam. Born in 1964. Could not stop reading. Crying. Cheering.

The women. Excellent must read

A page turner…... This page turner tells a, sometime gut wrenching story about those who fought the war that divided the country. How it affected so many with internal and external scars - many of my friends included. That war and that point in time should never be forgotten and novels like this will assure that.

Thank you. Thank you Kristin Hannah for writing such a raw, emotional story about the realities of war. And thank you to The Women…who, no doubt, were instrumental in saving my father, who was one of the many wounded.

This book had me laughing and crying! Eye opening!. This book had me laughing and crying! Eye opening!!

Favorite 4ever. Wow!!! I have no other words. This will be a favorite of mine forever!

Untold Story. I learned so much about the women (and men) who served in Vietnam - thank you for that, Kristin Hannah. Wonderful book and loved Frankie’s evolution.

Excellent. I had to grab tissue in the first 100 pages! Soooo good! My 2nd fave after The Nightingale!!

Couldn’t put it down. This book was amazing. Somehow Kristin Hannah knows how to draw you into each character’s life. While reading her vivid descriptions of bombs, surgeries, and pain, I felt like I was there. What an outstanding book and great honor to the women who served in Vietnam.

Amazing Read. I found myself reading for hours. Such a great book, it makes me want to go see the Vietnam Memorial. My son is a serviceman it hit close to home at times.

Unbelievably delicious!. This story captured my attention from the very first page. The evolution of it was both joyous and tragic. I learned so much and would HIGHLY recommend.

The women. WOW! This book is a real eye opener. I never thought about what is was like for the many nurses who came home to a bunch of uneducated people who thought women didn’t go to war! Back throughout history just think of all the women who were involved in wars but received no credit or help to assimilate back into civilization. Kristin Hannah did a great job of researching and writing this book!

Thank you to all who serve. Great read. Appreciate your enlightening us about this time in history and recognizing those who served.
