Tune In by Mark Lewisohn Book Summary

Tune In is the first volume of All These Years—a highly-anticipated, groundbreaking biographical trilogy by the world's leading Beatles historian. Mark Lewisohn uses his unprecedented archival access and hundreds of new interviews to construct the full story of the lives and work of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.

Ten years in the making, Tune In takes the Beatles from before their childhoods through the final hour of 1962—when, with breakthrough success just days away, they stand on the cusp of a whole new kind of fame and celebrity. They’ve one hit record ("Love Me Do") behind them and the next ("Please Please Me") primed for release, their first album session is booked, and America is clear on the horizon.  This is the lesser-known Beatles story—the pre-Fab years of Liverpool and Hamburg—and in many respects the most absorbing and incredible period of them all. Here is the complete and true account of their family lives, childhoods, teenage years and their infatuation with American music, here is the riveting narrative of their unforgettable days and nights in the Cavern Club, their laughs, larks and adventures when they could move about freely, before fame closed in.

For those who’ve never read a Beatles book before, this is the place to discover the young men behind the icons. For those who think they know John, Paul, George, and Ringo, it’s time to press the Reset button and tune into the real story, the lasting word.

Tune In. Very readable early history of the Beatles! A page turner for myself, a hardcore Beatles fan. Very detailed research into every aspect of the bands lives and there up and coming though tough climb to early fame. Great book !

Amazing!. The two decades that came after the Second World War were great turning points, not only in art and music, but in how people lived and thought. What better way to revisit and see that shift than by following the early evolution the Beatles? Honestly, even if you're not a Beatles fan, this book is well worth reading as an amazing historical exploration of English culture and life post WW 2 up to the end of 1962. Including living conditions, work, the music and entertainment industry, crime, schooling, etc. Fantastic writing, astonishing attention to detail, scholarly, but never boring, Lewison captures it all. He also manages to remain neutral, never tabloid scandal focused, nor fawning fan defensive. If ever there was a biography that sought to show the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, this is it. If you're only going to read one Beatles biography in your life, or if you just want a window into this fascinating period of the 20th century, this is the book for you. It is a magnum opus extraordinaire!

Sequels. Great book, but I thought this was the first in a trilogy.

Solidly Researched but Biased. Lewisohn may be a talented researcher, but his “definitive work” is so solidly in favor of his (self-admitted) preferred Beatle John Lennon that some entries can leave you cringing at their inherent bias. This book’s tone feels almost masturbatory.

Pure Speechless. I’ve been a Beatle fan for 42 years and read a lot of literature on the Fab Four and I would have to say “Tune In” is by far the best exhaustive, detailed documentary I’ve ever encountered reading. It was a challenge prying myself away from this best seller. I really appreciate the time effort and labor of love put into every detail necessary in the book. Mark Lewisohn also stayed true to the integrity of the Fab Four as individuals, never wavering, nor pulling punches; demonstrating the humanistic side of ones character whether flawed or unflawed. Mark literally painted a picture of each milestone of the group’s development from childhood to New Years Eve 1962 giving the reader a glimpse of what it was actually like in that time period. The in depth actual accounts and the stories behind it is highly appreciative. “Tune In” is a must read for any true Beatle fan. I can’t wait for volume 2 to come out, Thank you Mark for taking my enthusiasm for the Fab Four to the next level😊

Incredible detail... As a hard core Beatles fan,I'd thought I'd just about read it all. No so. Mark Lewisohn's Tune In incorporates a level of detail unseen or unheard of in any other book I've ever read about the early years of The Beatles. Who knew that for a while they were "****** 3" ? ( I won't give it away). A must for any serious fan. I can't wait for the next book...

Must Read. I’ve read lots of Beatle books. For the nerds who know a lot of the history like me, this book delivers all of the people, places and experiences in Beatles world up until 1963. If you thought you knew the story, you didn’t until reading this book. I can hardly wait for the 2nd and eventually 3rd part of the planned trilogy. I could have read this book for another year and not been bored.

FAB. This book is simply the best book ever written about the Beatles.

No stone left unturned.... Mark Lewisohn gives us the most detailed account of the Beatles early career that anyone has written. All I can say is that I cannot wait for the rest of the story. This is well-researched scholarship that reads quickly and well.

Tune In. A fantasic look into the early years of Lennon & McCartney as only this Writer can convey. A highly touted review of an eclectic bunch of extremely talented musicians growing up as young men who would, in fac, reshape music as we knew it

Excellent!. Very nuanced-the author did a great job with filling in the gaps of the story of the greatest rock band in the world - in addition, you really feel as a bystander...actually transported THERE..! Can't wait for Vol 2 - go man go!

Review for the book “Tune In”. A great read full of interesting history you probably didn’t know. It’s amazing the amount of time and dedication it most likely took to complete this book. The best book by far I’ve read on The Beatles. Very much worth the time to read. Enjoy. Thank you.

Finally a book deserving of the Beatles. Finally a book deserving of the Beatles!!

Tune In is Outstanding. Very detailed, well written, awesome work! The definitive work on the early Beatles! Very disappointed that I can't get volumes 2 & 3 right now!

Tune In. A really really good book. A great book actually. The only negative is having to wait until 2020 for Part 2 to come out.
