American politician and humanitarian James Earl Carter Jr. was born on October 1, 1924, and served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. Carter, a Democrat, served as Georgia's 76th governor from 1971 to 1975 as well as a state senator from 1963 to 1967. He is the oldest living former US president and the longest-serving president in US history, having served for 99 years. Carter grew up in Plains, Georgia, where he was born. Following his 1946 graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a submariner. After that, Carter went back home and started up his family's peanut farm. After that, he made it clear that he opposed racial segregation, backed the expanding civil rights movement, and joined the Democratic Party as an activist. From 1963 to 1967, he served in the Georgia State Senate. From 1971 to 1975, he led Georgia as governor. In the 1976 U.S. presidential election, Carter, a dark horse contender little known outside of Georgia, secured the Democratic nomination and barely defeated Gerald Ford, the sitting Republican president. On his second day in office, Carter pardoned all draft evaders during the Vietnam War. He developed a national energy program incorporating modern technologies, price control, and conservation. Carter pursued the second round of Strategic Arms Limitation Talks, the Panama Canal Treaties, and the Camp David Accords with success. He dealt with stagflation as well. The U.S. Department of Education and the Department of Energy were founded during his term. The hostage situation in Iran in 1979–1981; the energy crisis in 1979; the catastrophe at Three Mile Island; the revolution in Nicaragua; and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan all occurred near the end of his administration. Carter ended détente, imposed a grain embargo on the Soviet Union, announced the Carter Doctrine, and spearheaded the international boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow as a means of escalating the Cold War in retaliation to the invasion. In the 1980 presidential contest, he was decisively defeated by Republican candidate Ronald Reagan.
