Op 18 april 1906 werd San Francisco getroffen door een aardbeving met een kracht van 7.9. De stad was slecht voorbereid op de ramp, maar wat volgde was nog veel schokkender dan de beving zelf.

Thomas en Morgan-Witts reconstrueren de eerste paar dagen na de ramp en doen verslag van de talloze fouten die werden gemaakt in een poging veiligheid en orde in de stad te herstellen, en de enorme schade die dit juist aanrichtte.
Aan de hand van historische documenten en ooggetuigenverslagen onthullen Thomas en Morgan-Witts de corruptie en onbekwaamheid van de lokale overheid, maar ook de moed en het doorzettingsvermogen van de inwoners van San Francisco.
