Invisible Lines by Dr. Bonnie Libhart Book Summary

There seems to be a general unawareness that during World War II the United States kept over 400,000 German and Italian prisoners of war within the borders of our homeland. But I have the privilege of knowing this first hand. I suppose one would call it a privilege, since our government is always good at keeping things from the folks and over the years when I have remarked about the experience, I have been met with looks and gasps of disbelief. It is a little known fact that Prime Minister Winston Churchill convinced President Roosevelt to allow German prisoners of war to come to the United States during WWII. Due to the shortage of workers in America, twenty-five of those prisoners of war, worked on my dad’s cotton farm in Arkansas from 1943 to 1946. The neighbors who did not need the extra work, called my dad a Nazi-lover and a troublemaker.
