Betrayer by Aaron Dembski-Bowden Book Summary
The Shadow Crusade has begun. While the Ultramarines reel from Kor Phaeron’s surprise attack on Calth, Lorgar and the rest of the Word Bearers strike deep into the realm of Ultramar. Their unlikely allies, Angron and the World Eaters, continue to ravage each new system they come across – upon the garrison planet of Armatura, this relentless savagery may finally prove to be their undoing. Worlds will burn, Legions will clash and a primarch will fall.

Yes. Wow
Masterpiece !. This is one of my favorite Heresy novels, if not THE favorite. You get to see the World Eaters from the inside in a way that makes sense, while simultaneously getting a glimpse at what it will mean to be a Chaos Marine from Argel Tal of the Word Bearers, why someone might make such a choice, and how they might feel about the laughter of mad gods. This book is also full of small story seeds that I suspect we’ll see picked up later in the Heresy. What a ride!
Ughhhh. ADB really adds depth to some great characters that we know from the 40k universe in this chapter of the Horus Heresy like Khârn, Angron, etc. All of this great character development however is laid low a lack of development of the World Eaters and Word Bearers adversaries who only seem to be able to match the witty remarks of the main characters with "For the Emperor" or something equally banal. Sadly this is a trend is many of his books where the Imperial characters just seem like dolts who never really stood a chance in the conflicts through out the book and therefor makes this reader wonder why they should even care what happens since it's a forgone conclusion. This coupled with deus ex machina type events that repeatedly save the skins or various characters to allow them continue out wit and vanquish inferior adversaries. An example of this is when Angron adverts death by catching a titan's foot before it stomps on him and Lorgar. I know the primarchs are supposed to be mighty but even this beyond the point which imagination just gets silly. Kept reading however because the characters were compelling enough.

One of the best HH so far. Kharn the betrayer, 40k psychopath and stalwart of the lore is known by all 40k devotees. Who would've known ADB would write such a likeable yet tragic character?! Yes this book follows both Angron and Lorgar as they perfect the ruinstorm, but I found the tragedy of circumstances that found a self-loathing gladiator in charge of a legion and the valiant efforts of their first captain to try and hold them together the most satisfying part of the story. You see Angron as the vulnerable creature he is, just how far Lorgar has come since Isstvaan, and a legion's inner workings laid bare. Oh, lots of blood and gore too! Thoroughly enjoyable!
Another good Primarch novel. Much like the story of The Word Bearers - this is a clever look at how a legion turns bad. You'd think Angron and the World Eaters would be an easy transition since they're all blood drenched psychopaths already - but you do get a few actual moments of sympathy for an enslaved and brutalised set of characters. Cleverly this novel continues the war in Ultramar and manages to also follow the separate story of two Primarchs and the survivors of previous 'traitor' legions. There's a handful of times where the battles get a bit repetitive but I guess that's going to happen when you're dealing with these endless churning conflicts in the Heresy, mostly the book rattles along and doesn't dwell on tactics and technology - preferring psychology and horror.
