Deadly Assets by W. E. B. Griffin & William E. Butterworth IV Book Summary
The dramatic new novel in the Philadelphia police saga by #1 New York Times–bestselling author W. E. B. Griffin.
In Philadelphia—suffering among the country’s highest murder rates—the tension between the Philadelphia Police Department and its Citizens Oversight Committee has long been reaching a boiling point. That turmoil turns from bad to worse shortly after the committee begins targeting police shootings—especially those of twenty-seven-year-old Homicide Sergeant Matt Payne, the “Wyatt Earp of the Main Line”—and then the committee’s combative leader is found shot dead point-blank on the front porch of his run-down Philly row house.
As chanting protesters fill the streets, the city threatens to erupt. Payne, among many others accused of being complicit in the leader’s death, becomes quietly furious. He suspects there’s something deeper behind it all, but what? Ordered to stay out of the line of fire, he struggles ahead to do what he does best—his job. He’s been investigating the murder of a young family. A reporter, working on an illicit drug series for Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Mickey O’Hara, has been killed with his wife and child, a note stapled to his chest warning that the drug stories are to stop. Period. While Payne knows that he, like his pal O’Hara, cannot back down, he also knows that they damn sure could be among the next to die. . . .

Deadly Assets. Not sure what is happening to the Badge Of Honor series. This has always been my favorite series by WEB Griffen, I couldn't wait for the next book. Love the characters, but this book was almost boring, didn't like the ending at all. It was almost as if the characters were not there as they usually are. Even Matt Payne didn't seem the same. The story was not as easy to follow. Got my fingers crossed the next one will be great
Deadly reading. Boring, absolute waste of time and money. Characters are poorly drawn; events are all over the place, repetitive , and predictable ; narrative is way too preachy
Maybe the son just can't write?. Continuity has always been a problem for Griffin... Errors pop up in every series that make you question if the author has actually read the rest of each of the series. The writing-- at least until about 2005-- has been strong enough to overcome this. Badge of Honor as a series starts tied heavily to the 70s, then switches in the early books to the K-cars of Detroit in the 80s (without aging the characters), and recent books have been modern day (without aging the characters). Forty years later, Matt Payne is still a young cop in his mid-20s. Fine. But with the exception of cameos from Jason "the Black Buddha" Washington, the Honorable Jerry Carlucci, and newspaperman Mickey O'Hara-- none of the painstakingly created characters of this world show up for this installment, including our hero who has been turned into a caricature of himself. What the book boils down to is another riff on the Russian mafia and the corruption of politicians large and small. Either WEB IV can't write, WEB III has gone senile and cranky, or the two of them are trying to fulfill a "you owe us x many more books' contract without putting in any effort. As others before me, I have come to the conclusion that every time I am stupid enough to buy another book from this author it will be a mistake. I rationalize that today's purchase is a tip from me to the author for the enjoyment I have found in his earlier works. One unearned star.
TOO TOO MUCH. Sorry, Mr. Butterworth, but "Deadly Assets" is too disjointed weaving too many side stories with too many amateur forensic explanations leaving me, the all too tired reader, too disappointed with the old Badge of Honor series continuation. Too bad!
Horrible. I have long been a fan of W.E.B. Griffin, but this book is total crap. Took hundreds of pages to get the setup. I'm 600 pages in and no action at all. Flying here and there and talking on the phone. The plot is ridiculous and stupid. Don't waste your money.
Deadly Assets. Another great read that will make me go for the soon to be released offering. One minor note of interest: Bethlehem is on the border of Northampton and Lehigh counties, not Bucks. Also, in the teaser for the book at the end, the time period is 1946 yet the Butterworths' refer to the New York International airport as JFK airport. This airport opened in 1948 as New York International Airport. And was commonly known as Idlewild until being renamed in JFK in 1963
Deadly assets. Long winded, lots of characters, written with an arrogance, that makes me feel excluded and unaware. Sorry, lost money on this one:(
Great series, rushed book. Mr. Griffin writes beautiful characters, conversations and story lines, and his attention to history and culture is wonderful! That being said, this book was an afterthought. Many of the wonderfully developed characters we have come to love in this series were absent, or appeared in cameo roles, and the subplots and backgrounds we are used to seeing were missing. This was a decent read, but not up to the standard I have come to expect from this usually amazing, engaging author.
Skip it. Awful, skip it, save your money and save yourself from the pain.
Deadly Assets. I have read every Griffin book since his first Army series. This is the worst one ever. Since WEB stopped writing, the quality has gone downhill. I doubt I'll try any more of these stories, the rich character development WEB provided, really made his characters alive. They became like friends and I cared what happened to them. I'm really going to miss McCoy, from The Corps series as well as the rest of my friends. The ending of this book doesn't seem to exist. I really hope my iPad didn't download it completely.
Improvement Needed. Just finished "Deadly Assets", the twelfth book in the Philadelphia police series. By far the weakest effort in this series. Skip it.
