Washington Irving escribió Cuentos de la Alhambra después de realizar exhaustivas investigaciones en la Biblioteca universitaria de Granada y de recoger las leyendas que conservaban los habitantes de la Alhambra. De hecho, residió allí durante tres meses de 1829, lo que le permitió recoger mucha información y vivir en primera persona la situación del palacio que fue sede del monarca del reino nazarí de Granada. Esto propició que en la obra se entremezcle el presente de 1829 y el pasado, la investigación y la fantasía, lo español y lo oriental y los aspectos tanto mágicos como culturales que rodean al palacio. De hecho, Irving se desarrolló como un orientalista convencido y un amante de la cultura española y muestra de ello es Cuentos de la Alhambra, donde da cuenta de las leyendas hispanoarábigas y cuentos de la época, transmitidos a través de los granadinos, y que es un buen reflejo de las costumbres y modos de la época.
