Britt-Marie er 63 år og fra storbyen. Hun er gift med Kent, som er entreprenør, umådelig succesrig og gør gode forretninger med Tyskland – specielt om aftenen. Hun er ikke passiv-aggressiv. Men fedtede fingre og beskidte bestikskuffer kan få hende til at skrige indvendigt. Og hun har lyst til at skrige, da hun efter fyrre års ægteskab og et besøg hos Arbejdsformidlingen ender i Udkantssverige og den lille flække Borg.
Borg har lidt store tab under den finansielle krise. Forretningerne er lukket en efter en, nu er der kun Til Salg-skilte og et svedigt pizzeria tilbage. Og fodbold. Da Britt-Marie kommer til Borg, er fodbold det eneste vigtige, byens tilbageblevne børn og voksne brænder for. Og er der noget, Britt-Marie ikke bryder sig om, er det fodbold! Men hun må give Borg en chance.
Fredrik Backmans roman er et portræt af en lille by, som er let at overse. En roman om kærlighed, bikarbonat og nye begyndelser. Om at sparke til bolden, når den ligger der, om værdien af at blive set og om en kvinde, som har ventet hele sit liv på at begynde at leve.
