- Leur offre une vision globale de l'Histoire du monde avec des repères chronologiques et géographiques simples et clairs.
- Leur fait comprendre que cette Histoire ne peut se résumer à celle des puissants (princes, chefs religieux, riches) mais qu'elle est faite aussi, majoritairement, de la vie des grands "muets" du passé (paysans, artisans, esclaves, femmes ...).
- Leur montre quand et comment sont nées les inégalités entre les hommes, comment les guerres se sont multipliées, aggravées et comment, beaucoup plus tard s'est précisée l'idée que ces maux n'étaient peut-être pas une fatalité.
