No Game for a Dame by M. Ruth Myers Book Summary

A .38, a nip of gin and sensational legs get Depression-era private investigator Maggie Sullivan out of most scrapes – until a stranger threatens to bust her nose, she’s hauled in on suspicion of his murder and she finds herself in the cross-hairs of a sadistic crime boss.

Matching wits against dangerous men, with bits of information from a dime store waitress, a ragged newsboy and the girls at her rooming house, Maggie follows a path that leaves her drugged, in her DeSoto in a ditch.

A gunman puts a bullet through Maggie’s hat. Her shutterbug pal on the evening paper warns her off. A new cop whose presence unsettles her thinks she’s crooked. Before she finds all the answers she needs, she faces a half-crazed man with a gun, and a far more lethal point-blank killer.

If you like Robert B. Parker's hard boiled Spencer series and strong women sleuths, don't miss this one-of-a-kind Ohio detective from a time in United States history when dames wore hats -- but seldom a Smith & Wesson.

No Game for a Dame. Great read, well plotted, with interesting Characters, especially the heroine Maggie. Well crafted period references, too. I couldn't put it down.

The Dame has got Game!. Great read. Great dialogue. Fast paced and action packed. Loved it!

NO GAME FOR A DAME. A spell binding, page turning thriller. I was mesmerized from beginning to end!!!!

NO thanks.. I was enjoying this book until about 9% in, the author used Jesus’ name in vain - as a swear word. That’s a deal breaker for me & I won’t read any more of her work. You authors should take heed to the admonition in Scripture that God will not hold blameless those who do this. Sharpen up your vocabulary & stop resorting to things that offend Him greatly. The thing that makes saddest is that the book was recommended by one of my favorite authors who writes clean Christian mystery thrillers 😪

Great book!. This book was a fun read. Good characters.

Top notch!. What a gem of a book! Strong storyline, great characters, and solid, clean writing make for a terrific reading experience.

Ready for more Maggie. A great read. A tight suspenseful story that kept me reading page after page. Ready for more!

No Game for a Dame. I thoroughly enjoyed this book & look forward to reading others in this series.

Fun read. Strong lead character Maggie Sullivan is a private detective. She manages to get herself some interesting and complicated cases. The surrounding characters are well-developed and repeat through the series, giving the series a nice familiarity. The plots are good and I enjoy the intelligence Maggie uses to solve the case. Plenty of humor and descriptive storytelling makes for a book that's never boring. Highly recommend this set of tales!

Great read!. Loved it! Fun read, like Mike Hammer- hard boiled- but with a powerful lady in the prime spot. Funny at times, interesting crime, and tons of historical facts that paint a picture of America in the late 1930s. Will be reading the next Maggie Sullivan book for sure!

Loved it. Couldn't put it down. Reminded me of older authors I cut my teeth on.

Good beginning to a new series. I started out with this book just to give it a try, as I enjoy detective stories from this time period. I wasn’t sure if a female private detective would be able to fit in the era of tough guy detectives. After the first few chapters my fears were put to rest, “Maggie” holds her own. Smart, witty and resourceful, tough but not too tough not to be believable. Nice development of characters, most of which carry over into the next books as I had hoped. I started here and am now on book 5, with every intention of reading 6 and 7 as well, I just hope that isn’t the end of them, keep them coming !

Great read!. Great story fast paced!

Thoroughly enjoyable.. Independent, very competent, female shamus in the early 1930's. Not a romance--which is a good thing. The period details are interesting and believable.

What a peach!. Great book, couldn't put it down. It evokes the same feeling as classic Rex Stout, Dashell Hammit, and others of pre-WW II literature. The author never slipped, but kept true to the period while crafting a complicated and intriguing plot line. What I appreciate almost as much as a good story is the she has taken the time to rigorously edit her work as I could only find two tiny errors . The majority of free indie books are minefields of misspelling, poor grammar and technical issues. In contrast, it was a joy to read this one. I can't wait to read the next one, and recommend this book to everyone without reservation.

No Game for a Dame is a Great Read. A real page turner! Great characters! Some really cute similes! Thoroughly enjoyable!

title drew me to this book- promised a good read. used to listen to "candy matson" , a radio detective I truly enjoyed. the book sounds like her. great character- enough twists and turns to keep you turning the pages and trying to second guess what would happen next. loved the story, the atmosphere, and the characters. looking forward to the next 'installment ', book. thank you for an engaging look into the of lady detectives in a world we barely remember or have only read about.

Good Read. I enjoyed the book and the Maggie Smith character.

Great Read. Fast paced well developed plot. Started reading and could not put it down.

The title sets the stage. A well written story which seems to be historically accurate while illustrating a young women’s fight to compete in a “mans world “. The story speeds along with twist and turns taken at a breakneck pace. Maggie is a throughly likable personality who is very easy to root for and I look forward to reading her next adventure.

Good read. A rare treat. Well written and a great female lead character.

No Game for a Dame. Well written and very entertaining.

No Game for a Dame. Great characters and plot make No Game for a Dame a great read. Glad I found this author!

Great historical mystery. I liked the heroine a lot. Author added interesting pieces of depression-era history without being too heavy-handed. Interesting plot line with lots of excitement. Recommended.

No Game for a Dame.. Reminds me is Sgt. Joe Friday,”just the facts m’am”. Was a good read

Read in a day. Fast paced with loss of fingernails. Was determined not to like a hard-boiled female PI during the 1930s but she grew on me and I want to read more of Maggie Sullivan.

No Game for a Dame. I enjoyed reading this story. It was well written and moved along smoothly. Will definitely read more.

Loved this book!. The author's verbiage is right out of a '40's film noir! Also having a female as the hard boiled champion didn't hurt either. Thoroughly enjoyed, and will be reading the sequels.

Noir. Loved reading this book…I’m old enough to know most of the references to the way things were and the slang of the day. McCrory’s food counter brought memories about the iconic store (never sat at their counter, but shopped at one of their last stores). The clothing descriptions were perfect, especially those hats. The author has a wonderful knack of describing things with perfect clarity. Read it, you’ll love it too.

Brilliant lady detective in 1930s America.. No computers, internet or mobile phones, but Maggie solves a complicated case using landlines, paper and pen ( the mention of a ‘tablet’ confused me briefly, until I realised she meant a paper notebook!!) and brain power! An interesting female lead character, with some interesting minor males characters. I really enjoyed it!

I can’t rate this highly enough!. Everything about this book is brilliant. The setting, the characters and the plot make this a page turning, exciting read with moments of tension, humour and empathy. I’m completely hooked!

No game. Its. So straightforward it must be true. A very clever writer

Good read. Great little story set between the wars. Good pace and likeable characters. Narrative style lends itself to a lady dic and her cases.

No game for a dame. I love Maggie. She is brave, opinionated and she knows what she’s doing…

No game for a Dame. It made me laugh and kept me turning pages to find out who dunnit. Great read very entertaining Makes me think maybe Nancy Drew could have grown up to be Maggie Sullivan. Although she would have grown up in a different era. Nice historical references.

Pretty Good Read. This book was a reasonably good read. I got it for free on bookbub and was surprised at how entertaining it was. It rambled a bit in the middle, and there were a few threads that didn’t seem to go anywhere, but all in all I enjoyed it. It is not a page turner, rather a book that you can read a few pages and then turn off the light.

Interesting Read of the 1930s Mystery. I started reading and liked it was a female private investigator. The story puts a whole new twist when the main character is female in the years when cell phone don't exists, and a female detective don't fight with a karate chop. I like stories in this mindful manner to solve a crime. The author places all female characters in their places back in the 30s where my thoughts are when the story talks about people out of jobs in that city, just about after the stock market crash year. With this in mind of the era, the detective work for a female gives an interesting read of the mind of the character. Nice reading material!

No Game for a Dame. A very enjoyable read. I loved it!

No Game for a Dame. What a fun read! Made me laugh, and turning pages to see whodunnit! I got this free on bookbub and will definitely purchase the next book. Thanks Ruth, keep writing.
