The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory Book Summary

THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
A Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick

“There is so much to relate to and throughout the novel, there is a sharp feminist edge. Loved this one, and you will too.”—New York Times bestselling author Roxane Gay

The New York Times bestselling author of The Wedding Date serves up a novel about what happens when a public proposal doesn't turn into a happy ending, thanks to a woman who knows exactly how to make one on her own...

When someone asks you to spend your life with him, it shouldn't come as a surprise—or happen in front of 45,000 people.

When freelance writer Nikole Paterson goes to a Dodgers game with her actor boyfriend, his man bun, and his bros, the last thing she expects is a scoreboard proposal. Saying no isn't the hard part—they've only been dating for five months, and he can’t even spell her name correctly. The hard part is having to face a stadium full of disappointed fans...

At the game with his sister, Carlos Ibarra comes to Nik’s rescue and rushes her away from a camera crew. He’s even there for her when the video goes viral and Nik’s social media blows up—in a bad way. Nik knows that in the wilds of LA, a handsome doctor like Carlos can't be looking for anything serious, so she embarks on an epic rebound with him, filled with food, fun, and fantastic sex. But when their glorified hookups start breaking the rules, one of them has to be smart enough to put on the brakes...

Loved the Diversity!. 3-3.5 stars This was a cute and fun contemporary romance. It features a hilarious diverse cast of characters that I found really refreshing. I also really enjoyed the Los Angeles setting. This is my first book by the author and though previous characters from her book The Wedding Date appear, the book can be enjoyed as a stand alone. I liked Carlos and Nikole (Nik) both individually and together. They each had some baggage haunting them and influencing their actions, but as you got to know each character it made sense why they were so hesitant to explore the possibility of more. I enjoyed seeing their friends with benefits relationship blossom and develop as they slowly let their guard down. Readers should note that the majority of the love/sex scenes are fade to black or occur off page, so if they're looking for a hot and heavy read, this is not it. One thing I really loved about The Proposal was the relationships between Carlos and Nik's family and friends. Nik's friendship with Dana and Courtney was amazing and probably my favorite part of the book. We would all be lucky to have even 1 friend as loyal and supportive as these ladies. The book started off very promising and I was really intrigued by the proposal (and rejection) heard round the world, but afterwards, the pacing felt a little off and seemed to stall. A lot of time was spent describing food/drinks, when I really would have liked more back story about Carlos and Nik since it was such a big part of their character arcs. When the conflict arose, I felt Carlos acted completely out of character and honestly, I wasn't sure if I truly felt that they were at the point of those types of declarations. It all wrapped up very quickly and though it was very cute, I'm not sure I was really satisfied. I think what was the most odd for me was that I didn't feel that these characters acted their supposed ages. They are in their late 20's and early 30's, but I had to remind myself of this several times. Overall, this was still an easy and enjoyable read. *I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this book*

Same plot. This is the same plot as her other novel.

SHE DID IT AGAIN. Never fails! Love love love her books!! Can’t wait to continue reading the series!!!

GOOD READ. I READ THIS BOOK IN A DAY! I JUST COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN. LOVE A GOOD LOVE STORY.

It was ok. Not as good as the first one.

Don‘t bother. Read the first 50 pages, or rather, suffered through them. Writing was incredibly immature. „Wow, that‘s so...“ every two paragraphs. It felt like a high school novel. Terrible imagery, dull characters, and a boring storyline. Skip.

The Cutest Rom-Com!!!. Hello Sunshine’s Book Club pick for February is an adorable Rom-Com of clumsy, uncoordinated first love. Like watching puppies trying to go down the stairs for the first time. Worth the escape!!!

All air. 👎

Fantastic!. From beginning to end this book was phenomenal! I love everything about the book. I put it back on my want to read list because after I finish the authors other book, I will be reading this one again and again until I get tired of it! And to the author please write another book because I really want to know what happens next!

Amazing!. This book I finished in two days it was so good

Meh. Quick vacation read, not original in the slightest.

So so cheesy. Not worth the read.. So so cheesy. Not worth the read.

Must Read!!. I must say this book was worth the read! I stop reading for awhile and this book gave me what I’ve been missing. I can’t wait to read more from this author!!! I loved book 1&2!!

Worst book ever. Can’t believe Reese Witherspoon recommended this. It was horrible.

Pretty darn bad. Nothing happens in this book. Nothing. There is no plot, no conflict, and dialogue s very basic. I was looking for light reading for a trip, but this was bordering on inane.

Amazing Read. On to her next, The Wedding Date!

Greatness. Everything is so perfectly written and realistic. My heart is so full.🥰🥰

Bland romance. I think I came across this book on a book club recommendation. Not a very fulfilling read if you are looking for a romance that’s a little more intense. The language and plot line were bland and dragged. I kept waiting for a twist or something really dramatic to happen and it just wasn’t there. The story didn’t go where I thought it made sense to go - like ending with a proposal. Anti-climactic at best.

Awful. Worst book I have read in years. Poor writing and story line. Disappointed it made the cut for Reese’s book club.

A lovely delicious page-turner!. A fantastic read! I’ve loved every Jasmine Guillory book I’ve read so far. I love the chemistry between Nik and Carlos.

Amateur writing and story line. Underdeveloped, at best. Disappointed in the author for her use of colloquialisms and petty commentary by the protagonists. Bland writing and subpar plot. This story almost had potential. Not worth $11.99.

Love love!!. Such a sweet love story with a magical ending!

Great book. Can’t put this book down

Very predictable and unrealistic. This was a tough read. There was no depth to the characters or their conversations. If I punched someone on a sidewalk, the person walking by would not say “Wow, where did you learn that?”

Excellent read!. Loved this book, great characters and fantastic plot. So happy I picked it up!

A truly enjoyable read. This book reminded me of some of the things that have happened in my 30 year marriage to a black women. I feel like we should write a book about our marriage. Very realistic situation.

Wasted time. Cliche nonsense some of the worst dialogue.

Great Read. I really enjoyed this book.

kimaya. nworka

Boring. I was excited to read this book based off the Sunshine Club recommendation. Surprise to find it lack luster and boring. The plot is predictable and the storyline is slow moving and lame. The writing in this book is not complex or interesting.

Cute but slow!. A little tooooo similar to the Wedding Date in the beginning and extra corny but the ending made up for it.

Family is Everything. I so enjoyed this book, but wish I had read it everyday instead of reading a little bit at a time. The story is very modern-day, even if a little exaggerated. The characters are probably people you would find today, like those who help out without strings. I find it sad when a woman has to struggle to know love. Family is everything and can be that difference. I look forward to the next book.

Another great contemporary!. What’s not to love about this story?! So much of this was relatable and real. Had me laughing out loud and really in my feels. Nik and Carlos had great chemistry. Micro mini spoilers ahead ————- I already knew he was a pretty great guy/friend after being introduced in The Wedding Date, but now I really know him. I enjoyed Nik and her friends too. Carlos’ family was awesome. His backstory was also relatable as I’ve had a similar loss. Just, everything about this was great. I highly recommend as another wonderful read by JG. I look forward to reading more of her stories and meeting some of the people I know again. I love how authors do that. Write series that are also standalone reads. It’s so fun. I find myself feeling more attached to characters while encountering this writing style. Enjoy! And oh … fyi: there’s a cupcake recipe from the book on JG website. You’re welcome.

These Jasmine books are great. I’d love to push this to 5 stars but I think she needs a new editor to tighten these up. They are all highly readable and fun!

There’s a place for cheesy. I usually read cheesy books when I’m in a certain headspace. But, the dialogue in this is really hard to get through. Like she relied heavily on the character dialogue for the storytelling, which made the story feel forced. And it felt underdeveloped. Two stars for diversity tho!

So boring. I usually finish all books I start, but this book was such a waste of time I stopped about halfway through.

generally really cute. i liked it. it had a lot of dialogue, not much description which isn’t really for me. the whole confession they had felt rushed and weird and unrealistic but overall it was okay.
