Crier's War Book Reviews
Crier's War by Nina Varela Book Summary
From debut author Nina Varela comes the first book in a richly imagined epic fantasy duology about an impossible love between two girls—one human, one Made—whose romance could be the beginning of a revolution.
Perfect for fans of Marie Rutkoski’s The Winner’s Curse as well as Game of Thrones and Westworld.
After the War of Kinds ravaged the kingdom of Rabu, the Automae, designed to be the playthings of royals, usurped their owners’ estates and bent the human race to their will.
Now Ayla, a human servant rising in the ranks at the House of the Sovereign, dreams of avenging her family’s death…by killing the sovereign’s daughter, Lady Crier.
Crier was Made to be beautiful, flawless, and to carry on her father’s legacy. But that was before her betrothal to the enigmatic Scyre Kinok, before she discovered her father isn’t the benevolent king she once admired, and most importantly, before she met Ayla.
Now, with growing human unrest across the land, pressures from a foreign queen, and an evil new leader on the rise, Crier and Ayla find there may be only one path to love: war.

Pretty meh overall. The world is intriguing, but shallow. The protagonists are likable enough, but stupid (even for YA). The romance is fine, but dependent on mysterious feelings. This seems to be a (very) extended prologue for the second book. Still, I was sad when the book wanted me to be sad and anxious when it wanted me to be anxious. I just spent much of the time in between face palming, which I suspect is not what the author intended. I’m left with a lot of questions and I suspect that the answer to many if not all of them is “so the story can happen”. That’s not great storytelling to me, but LGBTQ+ folks deserve to have mediocre sci-if/fantasy too.
Beautiful Story. This book deserves more attention that it has! It tackles some big picture problems that we face or have faced such as, LGBTQ equality and rights, the oppression of a people group, the societal scapegoating of the poor. It's does all this without being "in your face" or being blunt. The plot itself is beautiful and rather inspiring.. I can't wait for the second book
mwah🥰💫. amazing
Great series. I usually don’t read and like those kind of books of made up worlds and lives but this book was/ is extraordinary. I couldn’t put it down and can’t wait to read the second book in the series. The writing was amazing and it drew me into the world of crier and ayla.
READ THIS BOOK.. This book is so so good! Absolutely loved it!
5 stars. it was amazing. i 100% recommend. beautiful world building and likeable characters.
Just what I needed. Reading this was exciting and a twisting path that left me eager to see around each corner. I meant to take my time, but wound up finishing this in three nights! Ayla and Crier are my new fav characters.
Eh. This was okay, not my favorite. I’m fairly sure there were a couple spelling issues. I also didn’t really feel connected to any of the characters. I do like the overall idea but everything feels underdeveloped. I also feel like there are some parts where you’re being spoon fed information. I also hated the giant blocks of paragraphs that seemed to get nowhere so most of the book I just skimmed through. I almost DNFd this book but I decided to get through it cuz it was short enough to stick with. Personally, it was just too underdeveloped, immature, a bit dull. I do think the author had a lot of potential though!
A rare gem. This book is really good. I like that it focuses on telling a good story and some world building rather than just on the relationship of the girls. There are a lot of same sex novels that make no attempt to tell a good fantasy story and just haul in on angsty lust. I enjoy reading books that have the whole package. Loved the character progression. Looking forward to the next novel!
Everything I Needed.Everything I Love.. This book was so incredibly good that it cured my depression for a whole week. My queer heart is so happy. I feel so seen. Thank you.
