One Good Dog by Susan Wilson Book Summary

"One Good Dog is a wonderful novel: a moving, tender, and brilliantly crafted story about two fighters—one a man, one a dog— hoping to leave the fight behind, who ultimately find their salvation in each other. Susan Wilson's clear and unflinching style is perfectly suited for her story that strips away the trappings and toys we all hide behind, and exposes our essential need to give and accept love in order to thrive."—Garth Stein, New York Times bestselling author of The Art of Racing in the Rain

Adam March is a self-made "Master of the Universe." He has it all: the beautiful wife, the high-powered job, the glittering circle of friends. But there is a price to be paid for all these trappings, and the pressure is mounting—until the day Adam makes a fatal mistake. His assistant leaves him a message with three words: your sister called. What no one knows is that Adam's sister has been missing for decades. That she represents the excruciatingly painful past he has left behind. And that her absence has secretly tormented him all these years. When his assistant brushes off his request for an explanation in favor of her more pressing personal call, Adam loses it. And all hell breaks loose.

Adam is escorted from the building. He loses his job. He loses his wife. He loses the life he's worked so hard to achieve. He doesn't believe it is possible to sink any lower when he is assigned to work in a soup kitchen as a form of community service. But unbeknownst to Adam, this is where his life will intersect with Chance.

Chance is a mixed breed Pit Bull. He's been born and raised to fight and seldom leaves the dirty basement where he is kept between fights. But Chance is not a victim or a monster. It is Chance's unique spirit that helps him escape and puts him in the path of Adam.

What transpires is the story of one man, one dog, and how they save each other—in ways they never could have expected.

One good dog. LOVED this book! Would have been better if more chapters would have been dogs thoughts instead of about his master and family. If u love dogs u should read this one!

Good book. I didn't expect to like this book, but was very pleasantly surprised. Great read. The point of view from the dog was excellent.

One Good Dog. I loved this book. Could not but it down from the 1st page.

Love it🐶. This was a beautiful story of how a man and a dog healed each other. Told from the mans point of view and the dogs point of view! If you love dogs you need to read this story.

For dog lovers. Not an epic book buy an emotional one I have a Pitbull mix and have learned so much about the breed. Wilson really makes you feel the pain this man endures through his new life, and really makes you cry like a baby at the end.

A can't put down book. This book hooked me right away and kept me riveted all the way through. I recommend this book with all my heart!

One Good Dog. One of the best books I have read lately at any price. Heartwarming tearjerker. Loved it!!

One Good Dog. Great Book. Harsh at times but well written and great lessons.

Great Story of Redemption. Reminiscent of Bruce Cameron, this book is a delightful, if often sad, look at lives that are intertwined by circumstance. Anyone that's felt the healing power of the special friendship that only comes from a good dog will love it. A great bargain book!

One Good Dog. This book is about the dogs except for the bad language in to it.

One Good Dog. Great book and an easy read. Loved the double redemption.

Love it!!. I loved this book so much but it makes you feel so much for those poor pitbulls who are hurt and worse by people. It makes me wonder how those people can willingly fight those poor dogs just for money.

Give this book a chance. I've bought so many books out of habit. This one is no different. What is different is how close life and death is portrayed with grief and content. The fine line between emotions that only life can let you experience and a book such as this one, can allow a chance view of death and still talk about it. Analyze it. Live death per say. I enjoyed all the emotions that this book brought on. It is very moving and a book I would recommend to everyone and anyone with a loyal bone in their body. I very much look forward to reading more from this author. I must also admit that I'm truly surprised this book was free.

Very sweet. I have a big place in my heart for pit bulls and wayward men. Both pull at your heart strings and repay you fully for a little love and kindness. Very well written.

One Good Dog. It was a great book, really makes you think about the connections between man and dog.

One Good Dog. One of the best books I've read but, get the tissues ready! So glad there is a happy ending!

One good dog. Great story! Made me laugh and made me cry. Serious dog lovers will appreciate the human side of the pit bull.

Get this book!. What a joy to read. I guarantee you will love this book! Get it now! Read it now! Enjoy it now!

Way better than expected. As a avid horror fan the thought of reading a novel about a man and his dog , well it just isn't me. But after sitting on my iPads bookshelf for many weeks as the zombie and monster books flew by , I decided to jump in , and boy am I glad I did . This was without a doubt one of the most enjoyable books I've read in a while , anyone who loves animals and even those who don't can find a little about themselves in these pages . My advice ... Give it a whirl , I still love my zombies and monsters, but this novel convinced me that we can all use a little heart warming sometimes ...."One Good Dog" ....one great book !!

Great Read!. I couldn't put it down and was hoping for the best for the two main characters. I loved the way Wilson represented Chance's thoughts and actions. A must read for anyone just to understand the bond between dog and man.

Budroy. I found the book to be very good! As a dog lover and the owner of a Boxer/White English bulldog I know how people feel about any dog that has bulldog in it's breed name. More people should read books like this one and then maybe there wouldn't be so much narrowed mined thinking.

One good dog. Loved it.

Beautiful story. Loved the point of view and the way the story was told!

One Good Dog. A wonderful but hard, sad read. Confusing and never explained, “Your Sister Called “ message. But it has a more than satisfactory ending.

One Good Dog. Excellent book, masterfully written, I couldn't put it down but Kleenex are a requisite. Can't wait to read more from this talented Author!

One Good Dog.. An excellent book.

Chance. I loved this book. I cried. It was a very moving story. A must read

Happy Ending?. Too sad. You have to assume the end is happy!

Great Read!. First time in a long time that I read an entire book in one day, it was that good. I could not stop reading.

Delightful tale. A successful story is one the reader doesn't want to set aside for bathroom breaks. Or food. Enjoyed the 1st person narration from the dog. Even though the plot was fairly predictable, I'm rather glad. I was in the mood for a good story of redemption and this was it. I would have been disappointed if it had shifted to a dark finish.

Loved this book. I loved reading this book, mainly because she wrote from the 1st person of the dog. I often think and wonder what my dogs are thinking and this book gave me another perspective. Although the lessons the man learned were very simplistic, and I think know by most, the book was still a fabulous read

A Good Dog. I would love for everyone to read this book! I am a pit bull owner and wish everyone could experience the love of a pit! I also was drawn into reading this book because my first pit bull was stolen from our front yard. At times I grew anxious reading this, wondering if my pet was being trained to fight or if he was the bait! To this date, I still don't know and may never know! GREAT book! NM- Fleann

One Good Dog. Didn't want it to end. It was fabulous!

One Good Dog. This story is awesome! The perspective narrative coming from the abused Pitbull, Chance is a great way to give all of us an unique idea at what dogs might be thinking of us and how we treat them. Even tho his life has been horribly cruel at the hands of humans, he reaches out to a man in trouble and shows why we all need the love of at least "One Good Dog" in our life!

Loved it. Dog lover read!!

Great. I was entranced by the two perspectives.

Loved it!. Couldn't put it down. If you are a Dog Person, this is the book for you.

One Good Dog. Amazing book. A must read for any animal lover. If only every person in the world could feel this type of love!

Eye opening. Great book from start to finish!!!

One Good Dog. This was one of the best books I have ever read. I often look at my dogs and wonder what they think of their humans and I imagine it's a lot like what I read in this beautiful story of love, patience, forgiveness and redemption. I absolutely loved it. Hope to see more along these lines by this author.

Loved it!!. Loves that it puts a misunderstood breed in the forefront of the reader's mind. A must read!

One Good Dog. A wonderful and gut-wrenching story. It makes me want to hug and kiss my dog all the more. I just loved it/

Cogent, Powerfully Evocative. Attracted by the title, I found myself leaning into the roll and pitch of the multi-stranded story to follow the human characters. I admit I am uneasy around pit bulls. My daughter, my shepherd/collie dog guide and I got attacked by a juvenile pit bull that was being trained for fighting as we walked home along residential streets. My hands got shewed up because I grabbed the dog to stop him from going after my daughter. My dog guide looked as if somebody had taken an ice pick to her and could not continue her work, leaving me to assay the long, uncertain search for a successor guide. We had raised a pit bull puppy and had to place her out when we moved out of state, but she was already becoming a problem. The wonder of this story is not diminished by those experiences. This author writes descriptively and having lived in the city she depicts, I could imagine myself walking down those streets and visiting at least some of the places. The story came alive for me in all of its levels. I would hope that people understand, though, that a pit bull, like the German shepherd dogs I prefer for guide work, are specialists and not suitable for every pet owner to own. My shepherds, while committed to their work and influenced by repetition and training to be exemplary canine citizens are working lines dogs who would become tyrants and bullies in the wrong hands. This book is really a good read. Thanks.

Incredible!. What a story, written partly through the eyes of a dog. I already have four pound puppies, but now I have an even greater appreciation for animals. Can't wait to read more books from Susan. A definite read!

Fantastic. I really liked this one! Great story about a dog. Some from the dogs point of view.

One good dog. A great read. Captivating, vivid, engrossing, beautiful. Really enjoyed it.

Great read!. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I loved the characters and how the story brought out the best in both of them.

Simply beautiful. Wonderful story well written ... Year jerker... But I just couldn't stop reading...

Redeeming. I am a sucker for books about dogs, and was fortunate enough to stumble upon this one during a sale. It's a quicker read, but gripping and enjoyable. I look forward to seeing what else this author has contributed!

Heart Touching. Absolutely love the book! It was very hard to put down, especially with such a wonderful and heart filled story. It reminded me so much about the companionship that my husband and his pit, Bo, had it made me smile and brought tears to my eyes. I will most definitely recommend this book to others!

One Good Dogs. I loved this book, was very well written. The story was so real, I felt I was part of it. So sad, but so like life, the feelings were overwhelming at times. Made me cry and smile too. Great!

One good dog. This was a wonderfully written book. The iOS & downs of both man & dog kept my interest to the very end.

One Good Dog. Great first chapter. Amazing description of a driven, arrogant and obsessed man's nervous breakdown.

The dog. Best ever

Review. An amazing read thats captivating form the start, right till the last page. My heart goes out to any animal that's is abused or mistreated. It's not there choice. It's ours to be responsible there the same as a child, and it is our duty to raise them to the best of our capabilities!

The dog. Truly a powerful story of the-simplistic need to be loved unconditionally in a fascinating tale from a dog and a man
