Sphere by Michael Crichton Book Summary

From the author of Jurassic Park, Timeline, and Congo comes a psychological thriller about a group of scientists who investigate a spaceship discovered on the ocean floor.

In the middle of the South Pacific, a thousand feet below the surface, a huge vessel is unearthed. Rushed to the scene is a team of American scientists who descend together into the depths to investigate the astonishing discovery. What they find defies their imaginations and mocks their attempts at logical explanation. It is a spaceship, but apparently it is undamaged by its fall from the sky. And, most startling, it appears to be at least three hundred years old, containing a terrifying and destructive force that must be controlled at all costs.

Good Read. I liked it much better than the movie!

Dr. Mo Rosen. The sphere is a great book, I’ve read more then once, the mix of humor, plot, fear, that goes on in that book is phenomenal. Signed, Dr. Mo Rosen P.H.D.

Want more. I love Michael Crichton and am reading my way through all his books. This book was amazing. Very imaginative Nd still believable. Science facts spun into fiction the way he does is incredible. This and Congo and of course The Jurassic Parks are must reads. Andromeda Strain too. That's a quick one. Read them all.

Sphere. Always the unexpected

SPHERE. Sphere is brilliant. It executes the thought of intelligent life elsewhere and suggests the allure of contact to such life undeniable in our current form. Eventually, asking if the "super-ego"can be taken from such meeting. A sort of precursor in selflessness necessary to make the stride for understanding. Unlocked to the highest intellectual bidder the sphere conquers human intellect. Ultimately, demonstrating our species inability to control an emotional intellect necessary in such aforementioned meeting while also questioning our ability to cope in high stress environments. Sphere forces a reflection, asking if we are even ready. Then it is gone.

Amazing!. This book was probably my all time favorite science fiction book. The plot line and the theories in this book were so intriguing and really caught my attention. It's really one of a kind, and I hardly doubt I'll ever find a book as mind boggling as Sphere. It made me rethink all my preconceptions about the story, the characters and even physics and the realm of possibilities! Great book, and I highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates a good science fiction read.

Ok Read. Not my fave book of his but still an interesting story. A difficult story to write for anyone I enjoyed it

Saw the movie first...... I started reading this book based on a reddit thread called "what movies do you absolutely hate that were based off of amazing books". Sphere came up in the top 3 so I decide to give it a read. I am not a sci-fi fan for the most part, so I didn't have high hopes for this storyline or the characters, but it was actually an enjoyable read. The movie took a whole lot of context out of the books storyline, which I felt were critical to the movie as a whole. Anyway, read it... Good stuff

Sphere is excellent!. One of the best books I've ever read, and an excellent and deep exploration of human motivations at the same time. In my social work program we weren't even taught material as deep as this work of fiction. Crichton hits another home run. You could randomly select any of his books from the library shelf and take home one of the most enjoyable books you'll ever read. This book explores the underlying motivations and unconscious reasoning behind the characters' tense and anxious moments underwater. The premise of the book is exciting enough, and there is suspense throughout, but when it comes to exploring these characters' emotional content, Crichton comes out on top. One wonders as to his scientific background, because for a medical doctor, he has an acute understanding of the human mind. This book will keep readers on the edge of their seat regardless if they appreciate subtleties of character development. Recommended to readers of all ages! Enjoy!

Crichton’s Worst by far. I have read 5 of Crichton’s works. Timeline and Congo being my favourites. This is by far the least imaginative and most predictable. The psychological theme in this book is an absolute fail. Spoiler alert, the “We will decide to forget” ending. What a joke!

The suspense!!. Very interesting and suspenseful novel.

One of my favorite books!. I haven't read this book in years, and this time around I got so much more out of it! It is one of the deepest books I've ever read -- fiction books, that is. It is so clever the way the characters are so subtly analyzed, and you can see reflections of yourself, too. In the meantime it is extremely suspenseful, and the topic seems so realistic that you wonder if something like this really happened, and the author was privy to it but sworn to secrecy. But so many of his books feel like that! Enjoy it! It is really excellent. I've heard the movie is awful, so don't judge it based on that, please!!!

Wow. Incredible read. My first Crichton and definitely not my last.

Sphere. It was the best book I've ever read it was fast paced and when things seem to add up more things get uncovered

Great book to very end. Edge of my seat.

Pretty fun yarn. I kind of got twist-and-turn fatigue towards the last third of the book. For me I think the forward motion in the beginning was more enjoyable than the ending, which felt a little overwrought to me. The first part of the book had me looking forward to a horror sci-fi romp a la Alien or Predator but what it ended up being was more of a speculative fiction action story with some hit or miss character drama. I wish he didn’t tease me with an ominous and foreboding first half if he wasn’t going to deliver on the scares later on. The book was very easy to read and keeps your interest. Overall decent pop fiction.

A few disappointments. Generally satisfying, though not the end I’d have wanted. Also a couple of disconnects. All the stated evidence was that the ship had been buried ~300 years, but the characters decided it was only 50 years departed and must have traveled back in time about 350 years. They assumed dates on equipment (did/mm/yy) had to be 50 years in the future; but just as easily they could have been multiple centuries in the future because the first 2 digits of the year were not a matter of discovered record.
