I’ve just finished this book and enjoyed it so much that I’ve all ready purchased books 2 & 3!. You know that a book is good when you think about the characters long after you’ve finished the novel! THE BODY THIEF was just that book! While it’s quite interesting to read about these 19th C. characters it is also a bit disconcerting to view London AND the characters from this same viewpoint. The women (who are the heroic spies) in this book we see them as very subservient to their male counterparts. It is frustrating to see the lead character Mary, a 16+ish female posing as a 20-year old ladies companion to Angelica. A. is a spoiled, mean, disrespectfully silly, wealthy “lady” that’s about the same age as Mary’s faux-age. Wealth gives you entitlement, just as it does today, and, the wealthy are entitled to be absolute snobs by belittling their lessers. I always enjoy historical fiction and this is quite well-done. The city of London went through a period where the Thames was a dumping ground for human sewage, garbage and factory run-offs. This was known as “the big stink” because of the pollution in the river. This is the backdrop to Mary on her first spy mission. Along the way she meets a young engineer named James. The two flirt, tease and fight (a lot!) but underlying this tension is a growing affection. Mary cannot tell anyone that she is a spy which gets her into trouble. I believe if you give this author a chance that you’d enjoy her story.
