Coming Home by Rosamunde Pilcher Book Summary
Teeming with marvelous, memorable characters in a novel that is a true masterpiece, Rosamunde Pilcher's Coming Home—the basis for the TV miniseries of the same name—is a book to be savored, reread, and cherished forever.
Against the backdrop of an elegant Cornwall mansion before World War II and a vast continent-spanning canvas during the turbulent war years, this involving story tells of an extraordinary young woman's coming of age, coming to grips with love and sadness, and in every sense of the term, coming home...
In 1935, Judith Dunbar is left behind at a British boarding school when her mother and baby sister go off to join her father in Singapore. At Saint Ursula's, her friendship with Loveday Carey-Lewis sweeps her into the privileged, madcap world of the British aristocracy, teaching her about values, friendship, and wealth. But it will be the drama of war, as it wrenches Judith from those she cares about most, that will teach her about courage...and about love.

Big Delicious Saga. I’m s huge fan of Rosamunde Pilcher and historical fiction and this book did not disappoint! The worst part was that it ended, so deeply engrossed I was in the complex characters and locations. As Americans we don’t realize how hard WW2 was on civilians who lived among the fighting; Mrs. Pilcher takes the reader into the thick of it whether it be war-torn England or the relative peace of Sri Lanka. I’ll read this book over and over again, just as I have with The Shell Seekers. Beautiful story and perfectly written; abig, juicy saga to dig into and lose oneself.
Epic!. This is by far my favorite book ever. A masterpiece of first person history of WWII, intertwined with stories of romance, family and deep seated roots. Hated for it to end!
I need more stars. Rosamunde Pilcher's books are so beautifully written that I immerse myself into her characters as well as the stories. I must have read this one at least three times.
Favorite Book. This is my favorite book of all time, and one of very few I've read twice. Once you read one of Rosemund Pilcher's books, you'll want to read them all. She puts you right into the setting, along with the characters. You'll live what they live and feel as they feel. I've wanted to visit Cornwall since I read this book the first time! Maybe I'll get there some day.
Coming Home. I love this book. It’s been with me a long time I have read it many times. It makes me cry at points and full of joy and is there when I need to fill my heart. R. Pilcher my favorite author always
A Comforting Read on a Rainy Day. I love Pilcher books and this one is certainly a great read. In typical Pilcher style you become well acquainted with the characters and grow fond of them. And I couldn't help but thoroughly enjoy all the characters, especially Judith. And the reason I picked up this book was to make use of a perfect, rainy weekend when a good Pilcher book feels like a luxury. But I felt, at times, that the book was weighted down with a bit too much detail that wasn't needed to give me the feel and sense of place nor characters. This is why I give it 4 stars instead of 3. While many think this is her best book, The Shell Seekers will always be y first love.
Coming Home. I savored every page!
Satisfying to the last page. Coming Home is classic Rosamunde Pilcher. All of her books have intriguing characters involved in strong plots who visit interesting locations all over England, and, in this case, overseas. You will be caught up in the story of the life of this main character, and you will love every minute of it. Pilcher writes using beautiful, lyrical words; there is no other author like her. This book is relatively long, but the story is very satisfying down to the last page, even as conflict occurs and everyone's life does not clean up perfectly. Every Pilcher book is highly recommended.
