The Library at Mount Char Book Reviews
The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins Book Summary
“Wholly original . . . the work of the newest major talent in fantasy.”—The Wall Street Journal
“Freakishly compelling . . . through heart-thumping acts of violence and laugh-out-loud moments, this book practically dares you to keep reading.”—Atlanta Magazine
A missing God.
A library with the secrets to the universe.
A woman too busy to notice her heart slipping away.
Carolyn's not so different from the other people around her. She likes guacamole and cigarettes and steak. She knows how to use a phone. Clothes are a bit tricky, but everyone says nice things about her outfit with the Christmas sweater over the gold bicycle shorts.
After all, she was a normal American herself once.
That was a long time ago, of course. Before her parents died. Before she and the others were taken in by the man they called Father.
In the years since then, Carolyn hasn't had a chance to get out much. Instead, she and her adopted siblings have been raised according to Father's ancient customs. They've studied the books in his Library and learned some of the secrets of his power. And sometimes, they've wondered if their cruel tutor might secretly be God.
Now, Father is missing—perhaps even dead—and the Library that holds his secrets stands unguarded. And with it, control over all of creation.
As Carolyn gathers the tools she needs for the battle to come, fierce competitors for this prize align against her, all of them with powers that far exceed her own.
But Carolyn has accounted for this.
And Carolyn has a plan.
The only trouble is that in the war to make a new God, she's forgotten to protect the things that make her human.
Populated by an unforgettable cast of characters and propelled by a plot that will shock you again and again, The Library at Mount Char is at once horrifying and hilarious, mind-blowingly alien and heartbreakingly human, sweepingly visionary and nail-bitingly thrilling—and signals the arrival of a major new voice in fantasy.
Praise for The Library at Mount Char

"Vivid . . . the dialogue sings . . . you'll spend equal time shuddering and chortling."—Dallas Morning News"

Fun, engaging from start to finish. This book was fun and engaging, a ride that was thoroughly enjoyed. I was left wanting more information and stories about the Librarians and their respective catalogs, but the overall story told was really interesting. I loved the twists and watching the story build from start to finish.
Outstanding. The tone of the novel remains brilliantly static, be it discussing guacamole or the holocaust of humanity. The imagination is wonderful. The characters are beautifully human. The book mocks the seriousness its observation of humanity, while you are still pondering the implications of said observations. Wonderful. Read it, then read it again.
Just. Wow. Outstanding in depth, characters, twists, and imagination. It’s been years since a book has risen into my top 10. Alas, here we are.
Spooky, Creepy, Quirky. all those cliches to describe a really good horror story. Stick with it and you’ll be rewarded with a very mind boggling story. Recommend to Koontz and King fans.
Great read. Funny, intense, gory, whimsical, weird.
Wow!. Read this book. What a story. Really strange at the beginning but it pays off big time. Ton of fun to read!
Brilliant. It’s so hard for me to find books that interest me and keep me interested. This book was so weirdly awesome. It kept me guessing and I loved how insane this story was. Highly recommend.
GOOD JOB. Just by chance I saw this book in iBooks. It looked interesting, so what the hell, I got it. Good choice on my part. I read the book in two days, note that I am not a fast reader. Enjoy the hell out of it. I hope there will be more to follow.
Great read. I'm always looking for books I can't put down, and this is one. You have to just keep reading in order to 1. Wrap your head around what's happening and 2. Find out what happens next. I've never read a book quite like this before! Nice job!
Good.. Good voice, fresh premise, gritty, but also filled with wit and absurdity. If you're looking for something new, but *good*, try this.
Mind boggling. It's an interesting, horrifying, and intense book.
A New Favorite. I laughed. I ached and trembled. I laughed some more. I gasped, and I cried. I will never forget this book. Easily one of my new favorites of all time. Perfectly crafted, the detail, the emotion. I felt it all, and as it reached its crescendo, I splintered. What a beautiful ache to be left with.
AWESOME STORY. Hawkins writing is engaging, fun (funny) and exciting. The story was full and ended with a great set-up for the next book in (hopefully) this series. IF YOU WANT A GOOD TIME, GET THIS BOOK.
Weird. Very weird, but in a good way.
Zelazny would have loved this. Great tale of gods and women. Roger Zelazny would have loved this.
The library at Mount Char. The first 3/4 of story was wired and wonderful. But the last quarter felt like the author didn’t know how to end it. Enjoyed the imagination and over the top creativity. Mostly fun and intense at times read.
